jp71ss
I just finished putting the 2.5 in ( I rebuilt it ), replaced all the vacuum hoses, new plugs. I cranked it and it is only running on 2 cylinders it seems. I have redid the timing belt and all the marks are as close as they can get but not be dead on perfect ( half a mark maybe ). I used the subaru tools to hold eveything in place while I did it. I can pull the plug wires on 2 and 4 and it makes no difference at idle. 1 and 3 makes a difference. Swapping the injector leads does nothing on 2 and 4. I don't know what to check for now. It is not setting any codes either unless I unplug an injector while it is running. Any ideas? jp71ss
Is there a different belt according to the tensioners? I have a newer 98 tensioner on it but I can put an older one on it if it will make it line up better. This is what I am thinking is causing the skipping. Idaho subaru
Have you checked for spark on each cylinder? Maybe try swapping the coil out?
jp71ss
The coil is definitely giving spark. I haven't checked it at the plug yet but it is at the coil.
Idaho subaru
I would swap the coil out anyway. Just to verify it is giving correct spark. Maybe try switching the wires around and see if the problem follows the wires. Or if you have an ohm tester, you could see if you have a couple bad wires. If you swap 2&4 with 1&3 and the problem move to 1&3, bad wires. If it stays with 2&4, it's either coil, ignition, timing, wiring, bad connector, bad ecu....... DOHC or SOHC? Timing marks, did you use the arrows or the hash marks? Reason for rebuild? Was this an issue before the rebuild or is it new?
spooln30
Your timing marks should be dead on. Even a half or one tooth will make a difference.
johnegg
which 2 are firing? any trouble codes? the tensioner does not matter, same belt. did you use the hash marks or the arrows for timing marks?
jp71ss
1 & 3 fire (passenger side) and 2 & 4 (drivers side) won't. If I move the timing belt 1 tooth either way the marks are off which ever way I move the belt. Trouble codes, no. I used the hash mark lined up to the mark on the block. The only time I had a trouble code was when I switched the injector harnesses while it was running to see if it made a difference.
jp71ss
I am just wondering that if the intake cam spun while trying to set the timing if it would bend valves and if it did would I have compression at all. I checked 2 & 4 and only got 70 and 80 lbs while turning motor over with starter. I have spark at the spark plugs too. EGR seems to be working. I used a Gates belt but am wondering if a subaru belt would time the valves better. Seems no matter how I set the belt the marks are not dead on. I know I have the right belt, it's a 277. Idaho subaru
Low compression is a bad sign. Might want to try " the dollar bill test" on the tailpipe?
jp71ss
dollar bill test?

jp71ss
I think I bent the valves when it spun once.
