Soarer
After spending over 4 years building a 1998 Legacy GT Ltd wagon with STi swap only to have it taken from me by a 19 year old girl running a red light at 50MPH the day after I got the car finished, I decided to upgrade a bit and picked up this 2005 Legacy GT Limited wagon with 5 speed manual transmission from another LGT.com member, BoostWagon who was an excellent seller and all around nice guy. Here's a shot of my 98 swapped wagon http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/2bucks/1998%20Subaru%20Legacy%20GT%20Wagon%20WRX%20Swap/009.jpg Link to the build thread for the 98: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1625469 Post accident http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/2bucks/1998%20Subaru%20Legacy%20GT%20Wagon%20WRX%20Swap/IMG_6098_zps9bb59f26.jpg Here are some pics of the new wagon http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/2bucks/2005%20Subaru%20Legacy%20GT%20Wagon%20Build/photo2_zps68e6526b.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/2bucks/2005%20Subaru%20Legacy%20GT%20Wagon%20Build/photo4_zpsb415bc64.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/2bucks/2005%20Subaru%20Legacy%20GT%20Wagon%20Build/image_zpsc06eea1f.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/2bucks/2005%20Subaru%20Legacy%20GT%20Wagon%20Build/image_zps0182e5e0.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/2bucks/2005%20Subaru%20Legacy%20GT%20Wagon%20Build/image_zps2403004a.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/2bucks/2005%20Subaru%20Legacy%20GT%20Wagon%20Build/image_zps892121cf.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/2bucks/2005%20Subaru%20Legacy%20GT%20Wagon%20Build/image_zps2b14543c.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/2bucks/2005%20Subaru%20Legacy%20GT%20Wagon%20Build/image_zps0623e72b.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/2bucks/2005%20Subaru%20Legacy%20GT%20Wagon%20Build/image_zpse6a2b170.jpg
Soarer
Here's a description of the car from the previous owner: The engine is dead stock except for a K&N filter in the stock air box. The turbo was rebuilt at 73,000 miles, the timing belt was replaced at that time. The heads were rebuilt at 83,000 miles, the engine has been trouble free for the last 50,000 miles. The clutch was replaced at about 115,000 with a WRX clutch, WRX flywheel, and tranquil snout kit (TSK). New battery this past summer. The suspension has been modified but not slammed, with Perrin front and rear sways (22 mm rear), Kartboy end links, and Koni adj shocks (shocks at about 103,000 miles). Handles great, not punishing unless you crank the shocks up. New front lower control arm bushings. Front brakes redone at about 98,000 miles with new calipers, new rotors, and Hawk HPS pads. Interior is excellent, heated front seats, HVAC, and secondary controls all work fine. Rubber floor mats and rear cargo tray. Jazzy Engineering iPod kit. Soarer
My goal for this car is to have it reliably putting down about 340 AWHP and have all issues sorted out. I want to have this be my DD for the next 3 or 4 years. I'm planning on selling my 2006 Nissan 350Z to buy a 1968 Camaro so the Legacy is going to be doing double duty as my DD and my sports car. After my 98 was totaled, I stripped it for parts and kept a bunch of stuff that I'm going to use on the 05. The parts include: V7 STi 6sp transmission R160 Mechanical Limited Slip Rear Differential Exedy Street Organic Disc Clutch Exedy Heavy Duty Pressure Plate (feels way too heavy. wish I used the regular one) - ended up switching to a regular Exedy STi pressure plate and love the pedal feel STi Clutch Master Cylinder & Slave w/braided line STi trans mount STi Shifter w/K4rtBoy Busings Megan Racing Engine Mounts Grimmspeed Electronic Boost Control Solenoid '04 STi BBS Goldies and set of silver STi BBS for the winter tires Invidia Up-Pipe Helix Crossover Pipe Brian Crower Valve Springs & Retainers Some other parts I've collected that'll also go into the build: StopTech front 4 Piston Calipers with ceramic pads DBA Front Rotors Continental ExtremeContact DWS 225/45/17 Tires Cobb Heat Shield HID Kit - never installed this Auto Driveshaft from 4EAT for 6sp swap SPT Exhaust Parts I've recently bought: K&N Typhoon CAI Gimmick Silicone Turbo Inlet Pipe ARP Head Studs Invidia catless Downpipe DW 1000cc Side Feed Injectors - tuners didn't want to work with these injectors so I did a top feed conversion with ID 1000cc injectors All CV Boots Rack Boots All Wheel Bearings New 09+ EJ257 BNR 18G Turbo - wastegate actuator from BNR wouldn't hold boost so I upgraded to TurboSmart unit 11mm Oil Pump EJ257 Oil Cooler AVCS Oil Control Valves Oil Pan Gasket Set All Rubber Hoses Parts I still need to buy: JDM Double Din Radio Kit Window Tints - DONE! Front Grill Fender Repair - Found a replacement fender in SWP Grimmspeed TMIC Kit - LOVE this piece. Wrapped it with some heat reflective gold tape and it looks great and is VERY effective. My tuner took temps and remarked about how it wasn't heat soaking WeatherTech Floor Mats Front Lip
Soarer
Since I got the car, I had to replace the injectors to get rid of a rough idle and misfire CEL. Other than that, all I did was change the oil and put some winter rims and tires on it. It's been an absolute pleasure to drive so far. I've put about 6,000 miles on it in 4 months. Looking forward to more!
Gex
Will the v7 6 speed swap into the 05? I was under the impression you needed v8+. Not sure where I heard that though. Hope I'm wrong. Look forward to the build!
98legwag
I saw your part out threads on other forums. I was wondering what you got to replace the 98. Looking forward to your progress.

Look forward to the build! I don't know anyone else that's done it but I don't see any reason why it shouldn't. The cases are the same size. The only difference in the V7 6sp is lack of DCCD, which I don't want anyway, and the closer ratio 5th and 6th gears. I'm going to lose an MPG or two but I really don't care. After driving this gearbox in my 98, I LOVED it. Can't wait to get it swapped into my 05.

Thanks man! I'm going to have a few part out threads starting on this forum too. I'm moving away from the WRXs and into the Legacy GTs now. I picked up another 05 Legacy GT Ltd 5sp wagon that I'm fixing up a few things on and reselling, picked up a 05 Legacy GT sedan with some nice mods that I'll be poaching for my build and then parting out the rest, also picking up another 05 Legacy GT auto with a rod knock that I'll be fixing and reselling. I'm really gonna get to know these cars!
BMXBYKR
Looking forward to your build Sir, good luck. I'm also looking into doing a EJ257 build. My motor has 90k and all cylinders are good with the exception of cyl 2. It's starting to go, need new piston rings. So I'm thinking of just either swapping a 257 or buying a built 257 short block, then finding a solid Sti long block and doing the internals then swapping everything over from mine. Any thoughts or recommendations? Suspension and brakes have been fully swapped and about every bolt on installed. I got my hands on a BNR 20g 11 blade that I'm holding off on installing until I build the motor. Looking for around 420whp.
TiExodus
Even though I read the first line and my heart dropped through the floor for you, I'm looking forward to seeing the build on the new LGT. It's super pretty. Love the LGT in white.

Personally, I'm a fan of using a stock OEM Subaru built short block because you know what you're getting. I've heard so many horror stories of built short blocks going bad very quickly. Unfortunately, you're capped at about 350whp with an OEM 257 block if you want to run it safely. If your car is a daily driver that you need to rely on, I'd suggest this route. If your car is more of a toy, weekend driver, track car, autocross car, then go for a built block and crank up the boost! If you need a short block for the foundation of a build, I may have one for sale. I'm picking up that 2005 Legacy GT sedan later today with a lightly spun bearing. The short block only has 2800 miles on it and I'd bet that the crank and block halves are still good. I need to pull it all apart to inspect everything first though. Soarer
Put the STi goldies on it yesterday, gave it a wash and removed the uni-brow bug shield. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/2bucks/2005%20Subaru%20Legacy%20GT%20Wagon%20Build/IMG_7364_zps3a3f7376.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/2bucks/2005%20Subaru%20Legacy%20GT%20Wagon%20Build/IMG_7366_zpse803ccbf.jpg
whiskydog
This is my exact car and I just picked it up a few weeks ago. Just bought the BNR 18G today! mine has 136k on orig turbo/clutch so I am not driving it much until i get the turbo and all supporting mods on. I'm hoping to avoid a block rebuild for a year or two, but am interested in going 6 spd when the tranny goes. I haven't found any threads on that swap but maybe I missed them. I'm open to any suggestions you have, this is my first subie.

whiskydog
There is a fine line between brave and stupid. I only meant that 135k orig is my starting point. I get a compression test next week to decide what needs be done to support the new turbo. Hopefully #'s are good and they can drop in forged pistons, rings etc. already purchased: Cobb cai, 740cc injectors, fast motors tmic, boost solenoid, invidia catless up/down, killer b oil feed, exedy stage 1 clutch, Cobb AP3, full tune by IAG perf,bc coils, white line adj sways, kartboy end links, kartboy ss/bushings. What am I missing? Bov? Oil/tranny cooler? New tranny/motor mounts? Thx! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Soarer
:mad:My motor just started knocking the other day. Looks like I'll be doing the new motor and build sooner than I had planned. Just ordered 4 new hubs, all new axle boots, rack boots, 6sp shifter arms so I can use an STi shifter, 6sp axle seals and sun dials. Next I have to cough up about $3k for the ej257 short block, gaskets, BNR 18G and CNT down pipe. Ouch!

Soarer
^I started noticing a very light noise when I would rev past 3200 RPM. It also did it a bit on startup when it was warm until it got oil pressure. It has sat for about a month and I just started it the other day to move it to where it will sit until the motor gets pulled and it didn't knock when started cold. I guess the oil was thicker or something. Anyway, I ordered my parts today. Put in the order for: EJ257 short block BNR 18G Turbo IPT Oil Line Filter Engine Gasket Set Gates Racing Timing Belt, idlers and water pump kit NGK Iridium one step colder plugs AVCS Oil Control Solenoid Valves Oil pump Oil pan Oil cooler All vacuum hoses All coolant hoses PCV valve assemble DW1000cc Injectors CNT catted downpipe Now I'm broke.
