Hello Joe;

Has been my experience when dealing with suspensions is to replace all of the bushings at one time. If a couple are gone, it won't be long before the others will follow! I only like going to the line-up shop one time, Steven.

 

Yeah, thats what I decided to do. The bushings are so cheap anyway that it just makes sense. It was $175 for every rear bushing and $125 for the whole front, including ball joints.

So I replaced all eight lifters on one side and it seemed to be fine, but after a test drive the motor seems to be knocking or something.

 

Anything that could have happened with the lifter install that would cause an issue like that?

I'm not sure of the lifter installation, but to determine where the noise is coming from you can use a stethoscope or even a long screwdriver held up tight to your ear and the block while the motor is running. Then try the heads. Your basically transfering sound through screwdriver. Sounds silly, but it works and its easy to tell where the most noise is coming from.

I originally did that last week and the noise was coming from the right side valve cover with a bit of noise coming from the timing cover. I haven't had a chance to do it again since last night but I seems to be coming from the left side of the motor now.

I have a friend who's a mechanic and if he comes across 1 low cylinder, he'll use seafoam in an attempt to clean the valves. This rarely works but it may be worth a shot before you start pulling the heads. Engine has to be hot, running, using a vacuum hose momentarily suck in some seafoam but don't suck so much as to stall the motor. After you get tons of smoke pouring out and about half your bottle of seafoam in the motor, shut it down and let the seafoam soak for 12hours or so. Then put the other half of the bottle in your fuel tank and drive it till the smoke is gone. If this doesn't help your compression you might be looking at a valve job or some rings.

Unfortunately it sounds like something is broken, not just dirty. The leakdown should give us a good idea of where the issue is, then we can go from there. My hope is that its something to do with the valves.

Leakdown test complete. Looks like the pressure is leaking into the crankcase and according to my roommate "Piston is Fucked"

 

I am starting to get a bit of an unsettling feeling from his abilities. The car needed lifters, as soon as he replaced them and started the car back up it starts knocking ten minutes later.

 

Could he have messed something up or is this just a very coincidental issue?

 

Edit: The leaking pressure in question is happening on the cylinder opposite the side where he did lifters.

Finally got around to putting the new door on today:

The rust will be properly fixed before painting, I just had nothing to do and figured I would give it a try. Came out pretty good!

I'm right this moment waiting for the third pass of primer to dry on a formerly rusty spot on the roof of my postal Lego.

Yay weekend progress!

 

Are you going to stay white or change it up?

I've got a couple cans of (factory) blue for mine headed my way.

That's a big improvement! Looks way better, even though its just a primer. What materials did you use to remove the rust?

 

Got bored again and finished up.

Thanks! I used a grinder and then a palm sander. It was basically all surface rust.

I found a complete longblockthat also came with a radiator and some other stuff. I knew checking Craigslist ten times a day would eventually pay off.

 

My friend picked it up for me because it was about 1.5 hours from me, so once I pick it up from him I will have a better idea of what I am working with. The guy who did own it pulled it from a running car so heres to hoping it is still at least close to running condition. :wub:

 

Total cost: $40 FORTY DOLLARS!
