akm3
I've seen pics implying both ways. I like the blue (gives it a Red White and Blue) Do we know if they actually light up blue or not, or is just red and white? Thank you for tuning in. -Allen
PPower
It has pretty much been proven that the blue hue is a reflection from the white line that only appears because of the long exposure time in the professional photos. The pictures evidently aren't a very good representation of what they look like. :(
gtmy04
That's right - the colours are red and white. It's also true that the display is much clearer and brighter than in any photo I've seen. It's very impressive, especially at night.

PPower
It's similar to the STi. BMW doesn't have electro-luminescent gauges. They are very unique.
Ken
I'm skeptical of that photo overexposure idea. The latest brochure from the GT announcement clearly shows the blue line on an MPH scale guage.
PPower
notice how the blue fads away wherever the white lines stop. Look at the blue around the oil temp symbol, gas sybol, Full/Empty, and Hot/Cold. PPower
How does it look in the daylight? In this picture it doesn't look nearly as amazing. STill gets the job done, though. AMT4SWA
The blue hue is a reflection of the WHITE gauge lighting onto the BLACK colored radial plastic piece that surrounds the flat gauge display. There is no actual BLUE lighting in the gauge display itself. :)

It looks a whole lot more impressive at night. Also, when turning ignition on, the dash lights up and all pointers do a bit of a dance. When turning off, everything goes off immediately except for the red rings which slowly fade into the background.

Dr. Zevil
People were bitchin' about the lack of the blue ring around the gauges on the "other" forum. I thought it was funny as hell when someone pointed out that it's just a reflection. Just made some people look like monkeys. I really like the gauges. Subaru's use of the gauges swinging to full position on startup as a selling point is kinda pathetic though. It should be one of those little bonuses for people who buy the car or take the time to go look at it. It's not a selling point.
PPower
Right, it's not a selling point at all. However, little design "treats" can stick in a person's mind and magically sell the car. Gauges are a good thing to spruce up because it's really what you look at more than anything else in the car as a driver. You don't stand outside the car and stare at the bumpers, and you don't stare at the seats that you're sitting in. You're watching the road and glancing down at the gauges. It's interesting to hear from people who've worked in car sales to see what "sold" the person on a car. I think the most amazing was somebody on nasioc saying that a guy came in and wanted a white vehicle w/ black interior. Car, truck, or whatever, so he left in a white/black Pathfinder. Dr. Zevil
Yeah I read that too. I can only imagine what kind of a consumer that guy is. People like that make us educated consumers look like rocket scientists. Either that or he has too much money and is buying a car for his spoiled teenager. I completely agree with you about the gauge sweep, it is something that's pretty cool.. and increases the "quality feel" of the car. But it's not something that should be put as a seperate selling point on a brochure.
PPower
From a marketing standpoint, it's definitely worth putting in the brochure as a separate point. I guess I should say that sweeping gauges SHOULDN'T be a selling point, but reality for many buyers is that sometimes little things like that ARE selling points. Pretty much every car that has "unique" gauges do feature them. Look at the Chronograph gauges of the IS300, the cool gauges in the V60R/V70R, VW Beetle, and I remember back to the very first gauge treatment- Maxima SE back in about 1989 with the black on white gauges. They all promoted this as a selling point, or at least did it to educate people on how to differentiate the car from the "regular" brethren. Dr. Zevil
We will just have to agree to disagree. I do see your point though. It may be just me but I would never base any merit on a decision of this magnitude over a novelty such as these gauges. They are gonna be sweeeeet though!
akm3
It is those cool little 'touches' that distinguish these cars from one another. It brings the pride of ownership that makes a Rolex more valuable then a Timex, for example. Otherwise, we'd all be driving the same car. -Allen
