Hey guys, I've been sick of my stock valet key for ages now.

So I was first going to go with some oem's from amazon,

Subie Part: 57497FC000

But I know that we can also use the STI keys, just not in the doors.

But really it's a bit too ricey for my blood, especially not having one STI part on the whole car. Which finally brought me to a key blank for a 2005 Legacy GT.

Now that's a key I can get behind ;) this one doesn't have the chip, so it's cheap as heck. I will probably just get it anyway but I was just wondering if anyone had experience with attempting to use this one, or if anyone has a good replacement key on their ring.

A ricey key..lol...you should see my wifes key, its got a monkey head on it.

I like the bottom one better than the ilco one I have as well.

Okay, I'm headed into the local dealership tomorrow to check out the last key, (57497AG10A) I'll let you know the outcomes. Should end up costing me around $15 for the blank and a few for cutting. I was going to order it online but everyone seems to have crazy shipping rates. like $15 for shipping alone on a $14 4oz keyblank.. to ship from Rutland, VT 15 miles to Wallingford, VT.

Eww, screw that. $80 is insane.

The dealership is out of stock of the key blank, the guy tried to sell me the plain non-transponder key that I was going to get from Amazon (57497FC000) but in the end I insisted on the fancy one, and got it ordered.

A side note, 3rd gen keys will not fit ours. This groove right here is very thin,

you can see on the newer 4th gen and up that that groove is wider again. maybe I'm in denial. but if it is too thin I can file it a hair wider until it fits. :spin:

I'll update when I get the key on Friday or if some more pressing info falls into my lap..

Officially, the key does not work. The guy at the dealership said that he will cut the key for free from the vin, but he can't cut this one because it's the wrong key all together. It has the same ridging as the 3rd gens, so too wide, and the grooves are too thin. I'll break out the dremel and modify my blank and see what I can't do with this. Overall it's been a crummy day, So I want to wash my hands of it for now.

Bluetooth keys and lock with push button ignition. Just an idea. I've been looking at the viper system with remote start and a push button system mated to it. Might as well since everything else is on my phone. Keys, what keys? The locks are there just for looks. Just can't lose my phone.

i wonder if swapping out the entire IGN Cyl is an option.. dont the third gens have that led ring around it too?

Yes it does, and the keys are just a little bit thicker too..

I guess I meant the 4th Gen cyl.. if those fit in the steering column then you could use both the newer key, and have the locator ring...

im going to see if i can find a wiring diagram for the 4th gen

You my friend are my hero. In a way. On this idea I started digging around and would you believe that a 1998 Subaru Forester has the same bloody locks as the 2001-2008 Legacys?

No? Well slap me and call me scruffles because I didn't believe it either.

Even in the doors

Zues, I love you.

I'll bet you can just get the tumblers changed out by a lock tech, might cost you a pretty penny but you can try and find a DIY for it....or if your feeling adventurous....

Nissan key blanks work in our cars too. I have a late 90's early 2000 Nissan key and it works great. It's a Ilco blank p/n DA31-P. I like it because it has a bigger head so it's easier to grip.

Just cuz that newer key fits into the Forester's locks that doesn't mean the locks will fit into our second gens. I know for sure the door locks won't. GL

Why don't you turn your valet key into your own custom one... The simplest way to go is the "JDM drift style" key.

It's pretty simple:

-Get an old broken screw driver that you broke or don't use.

-Heat the shaft of the screwdriver until it is hot enough to pull out of the plastic moulding.

-Cut the handle off the valet key with a cutting wheel or grinder. (Pliers may even work)

-Heat the cut key and push it in the plastic of the screwdriver and let it cool down and settle.

-Optional: You may choose to drill a very small hole in the screwdriver handle so you can run a string through it and connect the key to your key chain.

It's a really simple job, custom, something you can say you made, and I'm supposing you have nothing to lose considering you got the new key.

I'll be honest though, it is somewhat inconvenient to carry around in your pocket.

It'd be entertaining to see a cops face if he saw it. "License and registr.... could you step out of the car sir"
