Rudeboy47 Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Hey guys! I have 98 legacy 2.5 gt and It's time to change the timing belt. Wondering what's the best quality timing belt kit I can get. I was looking for some on eBay but wanted to find out which is most recommended before purchasing.
Headtrauma89 Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Most people go for gates if you want to spend an arm and a leg for the name. I've had great luck personly buying from mizumoauto on ebay. Just opt for the kit with the better water pump. I've bought 3 kits from them and I'm about buy my 4th.
Kennyfvholla Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Gates is definitely the best aftermarket supplier. My '99 OBL had an entire Gates kits installed from the belt to the pulleys to the tensioner, and even the water pump. The only thing you have to look out for is the tensioner itself. There are two styles. I prefer the early design to the second design (the early design is much stronger and more reliable). Also, there are TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT brackets that bolt to the motor for each tensioner style. And yes, you will NEED to replace the tensioner as a part of the timing belt job. How many miles on are the motor and has the belt ever been changed before?
Rudeboy47 Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 Does anyone have the part number for the exact kit I need? They have several on ebY and what does the old style tensioner look like? The car has 156*** miles and I think has been changed once. Not sure how long ago? I bought the car at at 145***
Kennyfvholla Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Okay, because the belt has already been changed once, it may have been installed with second style tensioner arm, but you won't know until you start the job and get the timing cover off. I suggest doing that before you purchase all of the parts, that way you don't have to buy both beforehand and return what you don't use. If you remove the accessory belts, accessory belt tensioner, and crank pulley, you'll be able to pull the center section of the timing belt cover off and see what you're working with. - Now, ALL Gates timing belt kits come with the second style tensioner. If you find your car has this style, and feel comfortable keeping it, then all you need is the full kit. If you find you have the original (1st design) style tensioner, you will need to buy the following items separately: Timing belt Pulleys Water Pump Tensioner Tensioner pulley If you find you have the second style tensioner assembly, and want to convert back to the original design, you'll need the aforementioned parts as well as a bracket for the tensioner and pulley to bolt to. That, you'd have to get from the dealer or anyone else who sells it. I do not know who sells it. Check out Parts Geek, they'll have everything you need. Search around the site, see what they have available, and make a few calls to their customer service people, and you will figure out exactly what you need.

Headtrauma89 Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 That's just a pic of the pulley that goes with the first style tensioner...
Kennyfvholla Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Yeah.... That's what it's supposed to be a picture of.... There's also a picture of the first design tensioner....
Kennyfvholla Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Oh shit lol. My bad. I didn't see that. *fixes*
DOHCEJ22E1 Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 I've never had a problem with Mitsuboshi belts. They seem to be just as great as OEM.
twisty Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I've never had a problem with Mitsuboshi belts. They seem to be just as great as OEM. mine makes a ton of noise on my 2.2.
Rudeboy47 Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 So has any one ever had Han experiences w the 2nd style tensioner?
spooln30 Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I've never had a problem with Mitsuboshi belts. They seem to be just as great as OEM. That's who makes Subaru belts and most all Japanese manufacturers timing belts and drive belts. Their great belts and they make even better ATV drive belts. Remember you get what you pay for, so if your cheap and buy the least expensive belt and or pulleys don't expect them to last long. I only install OEM, Gates or Mits belts. Dayco belts are GARBAGE. You guys should be some of the atv Dayco belts that I've seen that's have broken with in miles of installs. By miles I am talking 1-20 miles. Straight garbage.
Rudeboy47 Posted February 3, 2014 Author Posted February 3, 2014 When it comes to installing the water pump should I just use the gasket it came with or use silicon? What do you guys recommend?
monkeyposeur Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 I put rtv sealant on both sides of the gasket. It helps hold it in place and gave me a little more peace of mind.
JJay03 Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 I got a metal gasket from the dealer with a oem water pump and used the gates kit. I heard gates makes the factory tensioners for subaru not sure how true that is but they look identical.
