turdo Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 hello all, new user here. i have just finished replacing the head gaskets on my dads 98 legacy outback. (automatic) the car is surprisingly easy to work on, and with my small hands i didnt need to disconnect any engine mounts! in my past, ive done plenty of wrenching on an SVX, so subarus arent too foreign to me. the issue, however, is the security system, after reconnecting the battery, all i get is a door ding (if key is in) and the lights flashing every second. note: my dad does not have the key fob for the car, and never has. ive followed the instructions on the yellow sticker next to the battery. to no avail.. ive also done alot of searching around on the internet, and have tried every technique known to man to "reset" the security system/ECU. ive even stripped the wires to the little black button and touched them together just in case the button was broken. one thing that is odd to me, is that NOTHING works while the security system is on. that is - no brake lights, no interior lights, no headlights, wipers, mirros, and i cant even put the car in Neutral. is this normal? because im leading to a main fuse being blown or something... unless its normal. does anyone have any idea why i cant turn off the security? am i going to have to buy a key fob and sync it to the car? this is horribly frustrating.. thanks!
johnegg Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 disconnect the battery, put key in ignition, turn key to start and let go, connect the battery, turn key off. good work.
turdo Posted January 15, 2014 Author Posted January 15, 2014 tried that.. like i said, ive tried just about everything. there must be something else at play here.
johnegg Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 if it is a subaru security system, it will work. try again. the key MUST be in the ON / RUN position when you connect the battery.
gergeek Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 you can also just hold down the unlock button on your keyfob. i had that issue as well
turdo Posted January 16, 2014 Author Posted January 16, 2014 1. dont have key fob 2. its not working. battery - plugged in, key in "run" position, hold down button for 1 second... no results battery - plugged in, key in "run" position, hold down button till doors lock/unlock... no results battery - plugged in, hold down button, turn key to "run position" wait for something to happen... no results. if i need to make a video i will - its just not working
johnegg Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 there are to different things here. to connect the battery so the lights do not flash follow my instructions above. at no time did i mention pushing a button. there are other instructions for ''programming a key fob'' that include pushing a button. follow the instructions. 1. disconnect the battery, 2. put key in ignition, 3. turn key to start and let go, 4. connect the battery, 5. turn key off. DO NOT PUSH THE BUTTON.
Bwmcclintock Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Changed battery on 1997 Legacy Outback. Lights wouldn't stop flashing. Followed your instructions for no security system. Worked great! Thanks, Bryan
turdo Posted February 11, 2014 Author Posted February 11, 2014 heres the update.. i tried everything.. EVERYTHING!.. im a very competent person so i did everything per the instructions given to me, and nothing was shutting off the security system. can you understand why this got frustrating??? i eventually just ran a 12 gauge wire directly from the battery to the ignition switch, completely bypassing that imbecile security box (which i smashed with a hammer!!). all is back to normal now - including my hatred for modern day electronics in automobiles...
I Donated broknindarkagain Posted February 12, 2014 I Donated Posted February 12, 2014 You could have just put the key in the drivers door (with teh door closed) and cycled the lock. It would have shut off then. Thats what I have to do on my two 95s -broknindarkagain My Current Project - Click Here COME AND TAKE IT "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
