Kido Racing coilovers?

Was planning on lowering my '07 outback xt this spring, and decided since I'm on a budget safest and smoothest option would be some KYB struts, mounted with LGT spring along with LGT bumps stops and LGT upper rear control arms. However I stumbled upon these Kido Coilovers from Tiawan. I haven't been able to find much, searched the forums only found 1 mention of them as being a really cheaply priced coilover but no opinions or reviews. Anyone have more info on them?

A lot of products engineered in Japan, and the U.S. also, are manufactured in Taiwan, some of them are excellent quality. The quality control and manufacturing tolerances of most companies in Taiwan are actually pretty solid, and in no way should be compared to some low-tolerance, under-spec'd machine goods manufactured in China.

That being said, those are garbage, do not spend your money on them.

They are likely rebranded and re-colored from the same or similar factories that spit out Megan/BC/ISC/insertracesoundingnamehere.

Quality damping requires a lot more engineering and precision manufacturing than can be squeezed into a $1K price point set of coil overs. This is why most people with suspension experience/knowledge will tell you to go with a quality twin-tube with adjustable rebound, i.e. Koni insert.

I get an e-mail weekly from various manufacturers in China and Taiwan explaining how I can have my own line of Coilovers and I would be their exclusive distributor in the US. The problem with sub $1k coilovers is the quality control is awful on them and no one tests the products until they are in the customers hands.

When purchasing coilovers you want to have what we call in the Suspension Business a "matched" set. What that means is that the set you get has been put on a shock dyno to make sure that the dampening doesn't drop off after the first heat cycle and that the left and right sides are showing the same curve for the same setting.

Often times on these cheaper coilovers you will see very high spring rates to help compensate for the lack of dampening. This makes them VERY bouncy.

We've seen very poor welds on most of these sub 1K units where the tabs for the ABS and brake lines are less than tack welded on and the welds look like they were done by Stevie Wonder!

Lastly, with any coilovers they should be removed and cleaned and lubricated each year to prevent the winter weather and dirt from corroding the sleeves and the threads where the height adjustment collars are. This adds to the cost of having a set of coilovers as well.

Great read, even for someone like myself who has been auto-xing and road racing for years. Excellent stuff.

This is why hopefully sometime in 2014 we will be purchasing a shock dyno so we can actually start testing dampers for our clients and hopefully we will start building "matched" sets of shocks and coilovers.

We definitely will try to see what we can cook up once we get up and running!
