jp71ss Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 I am toying with the idea of getting a short shifter for my 97 gt. Which is the best, what can I get by with and is it worth it for these small cars. I have a competition plus shifter in my nova, will it be like that?
Zues Marine Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 the $30 eBay one will suffice honestly.. ran it in my old sedan without issue for a while
jp71ss Posted January 6, 2014 Author Posted January 6, 2014 Since I need to replace my rack ( I already have one out of a 98 outback) what bushings would go well with the upgraded shifter, suspension, rack?
Zues Marine Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 hardened steering rack bushings from a first gen GC8 impreza are a ridiculously efficient $35 mod... throw in some shifter bushings and maybe a new trans. mount too
Headtrauma89 Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Its a must do mod! By far one of my favorite parts of my car. I researched a lot before i bought mine, I went for the TWM performance short shifter. Its a bit more expensive, but I like the engineering that went into it. Its not just short, the bend is in a different spot too, this lessens the overall throw even more. Check it out on http://www.twmperformance.com/. Some people are happy with the cheap ones though, but Its up to you.
awilkie84 Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Would this fit? http://www.ebay.ca/itm/02-05-SUBARU-WRX-BLUE-RACING-SHORT-THROW-SHIFTER-/190986440577?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1998%7CModel%3ALegacy&hash=item2c77adcf81&vxp=mtr&_uhb=1
spooln30 Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Remember that sense a short throw shifter decreases the throw it also increases the speed in which the shift forks engaged the synchros. If you like to speed shift you will decrease the life of the synchros and forks. Also I would recommend replacing the trans fluid with some Amsoil Synchromesh fluid. It will help for harsher driving conditions. GL.
Kennyfvholla Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 I use nothing but GM Synchromesh Friction Modified. I wish I had known about it when I still had my 98 LGT 5MT
spooln30 Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 The GM stuff is pretty good but I had some issues with my Supras trans while running the GM fluid and I tried the Amsoil and it minimized the issues. In the end I had to rebuild my trans with 150k and 62k of those miles were with 400whp to now 730whp. I run only Amsoil fluids now in the Supra.

It seems like a really good short shifter from its design but I don't think I would cough up that much for it.
TexasLegacy2.5GT Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 ^^^171.00 bucks? I guess I shouldn't tell you about all the parts and how much I've paid to bring my BD back from the dead... 171 bucks...Jesus, that's nothing.

Honestly, my car would be in the bone yard if it wasn't for me just fixing it up part by part. Don't go cheap.

Honestly, my car would be in the bone yard if it wasn't for me just fixing it up part by part. Don't go cheap. I'm sure the car is great fun to drive with a quality short shifter. I know because my other car has one. I spent $60 for it and it is heaps more fun to drive! So, I'm not cheaping out in the sense of the $15 ebay ones. But the one you got is a little much for me. However, it's all about how you like your car and making it to your liking. If that's the way you roll, I totally respect that.

Trying to see how much difference it is from a stock one.
1-3-2-4 Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 How does the shifter feel with a short shifter really? I've heard it's harder.. now that I put a '05 WRX shift knob on my stock shifter it's raised it up a good few millimeters. That's why I'm holding off on getting another shift boot because I can't make my mind up yet. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/593/xdxw2.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/194/bsyp.jpg
Zues Marine Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 , I'm not cheaping out in the sense of the $15 ebay ones. I'm not one to bash on people's mods but $171 for a short shifter on a sub-100hp car is a waste of money when the $15 option does the same thing.
jp71ss Posted January 16, 2014 Author Posted January 16, 2014 Well I bought the 29 shifter and I will find out how it is when I get everything back in the car. I think I will be satisfied. Just trying to decide what fluid I want to go with. The local amsoil dealer wants me to use the 75w90 he has.
Headtrauma89 Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Check out redlinegoods.com for a shift boot. Great prices and great products
JJay03 Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Ill prob get the TWM shifter after I get my swap done I know they make good stuff. I just hope it isnt too notchy. I had a B&M shifter on my protege and it was great but they dont make one for the second gen legacy. Some people like a real notchy shifter but not me. A lot of times ill go through a few shifters till I find one I like. On my camaro the pro 5.0 that alot of people like I hated it and same with the kartboy on my protege.

JJay03 Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I have ordered from them before they make nice products. If something doesnt fit right though the customer service is not very good.

Another thing, seems like the link is broken on the site but I don't understand the stitching pattern, they say they have one that forms a X and the other is front to back.. I can't really visualize what these two look like.
