Anyone move from 2005 LGT Wagon to WRX? Regrets? No-regrets?

Hi All,

Owner of unicorn 2005 LGT Wagon 5MT Royal Blue Pearl. low miles (77k), great cosmetic shape, fixed the minor things. However some quirks are enough to make me consider a newer model WRX vs putting the money into getting this car truer to its potential. I got it for a great price and I've put some sweat equity into detailing it and could make a small profit.

minor issues are the seats, stereo, drive by wire lag. Things, I think are fixable with enough money are handling, stage 2 engine upgrades, tune, upgraded clutch, wheels, tires, 6 speed transmission upgrade, improved brakes.

Has anyone made this change from 2005 GT wagon 5mt to WRX and regretted or never looked back?

I appreciate the rarity of the car, sleeper persona, and utility of a wagon, but am torn between something like a 2009+ wrx hatchback

Drive the wrx and if you can put up with the cheapness and rattles go for it. Personally I couldn't but I wouldn't drop too much coin into an 05.

The 2009-2014 WRX has the same five speed as the LGT. The VF52 turbo in the 09+wrx puts out a little more power but the interiors are not as nice. Also with a WRX you get everybody and their cousin wanting to play racecar.

Also is your wagon paid off? The 09+wrx is just so similar to the Legacy. I would fix what you have and throw the VF52 on the legacy. But that's just me.

Personally If I was dead set on a new WRX I would wait for the 2016 just to see how the new model is vetted in the court of public opinion.

New WRX is the 2015 model, and will be out for sale early-mid 2014. There won't be a hatchback version though, sedan only, so if he's worried about cargo space in hatch vs wagon, that's probably a problem.

There's also the Levorg, but I'm not sure if that's a turbo Impreza wagon, or a WRX wagon with the stiffer chassis. Also, it's not expected to go on sale in the US.

There are already a lot of first drive reviews out. It sounds pretty promising, and is on my list for LGT replacement in several years.

If you are in it just to get something new, by all means a new(er) car is the way to go.

Throttle lag...are you talking about the turbo lag? I think you can quicken throttle actuation through a tune, make it S# all the time if you really want. Stage 2, e-tuned, will put a big smile on your face. Think stock STI power and lots more torque.

He's got an 05 so no SI Drive. His probably behaves similar to the "Sport" setting on cars with SI and I can definitely understand that frustration. A tune can take of that though.

Personally, if you have the money laying around, willing to give up a few "luxuries" and want something newer I'd say go for it. I love the looks of the 11-14 WRX. Its true the interior isn't great but lets be honest the LGT interior is nothing to write home about either.

I have a '13 WRX and just picked up an 05 LGT... The LGT has a nicer interior and seems to pull harder than my WRX... (WRX makes 420lbft) :dunno:

I say keep the LGT and wait for the '15 WRX.

Yeah, I knew that, but I honestly don't see the "sport" setting as a hindrance. My '08 has an SI drive and I've used the S#, or the intelligent mode maybe a dozen times in the last six years. :icon_neut But to each their own, and as you say on a throttle by wire, you can get that easily tuned to your liking.
