front door speaker

I'm installing some new speakers in the front doors and I wanted to cut the old speaker from the speaker basket and mount the new ones in the stock basket since they have a nice water shield built into the OE basket. Plus the OE basket is angled and mates up nice and close to the door grille.

 

Question is this possible? I saw one thread where someone was trying to do this but it wasn't clear if he was successful or not. Speaker dimension is 6.5 round and 2 1/4" deep.
