Markbo Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 I saw a couple of threads where the dash pod cluster bezel was replaced to add 2 gauges at the bottom like this: http://www.greenhydrant.com/gallery/d/15850-2/IMG_0348.jpg I have read about a cubby hole 2 pod cluster - though haven't seen a pic of an install - and of course there is always the A pillar option. I don't really want to mount anything to the steering column or the dash itself. I just don't like the look. I was curious what the most popular mounting option(s) is and which gauges? I like the clean look of the bezel replacement (IF the material looks right!) but I was thinking boost and .... oil pressure or Air fuel or both?? I can worry about the particular gauges later. If I could get them to match the unusual Subaru lighting pattern, that would be great.
baconbits Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 Perrin makes a pod similar to the one in the picture. JCS makes a cubby pod. Many people make A pillar pods or stuff you can screw/bolt to your steering column cover or dash. Personally, the A pillar pods and mounting them to the dash doesn't look factory (looks like isht in my opinion) so I'll be doing the dual column pod like you pictured. AEM makes a nice gauge that does boost and AFR and I'm almost certain another that does oil temp and pressure. Those are what I'm planning on going with when I can come up with the cash.
LGTmakes3 Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 I'd like to see some gauge options myself. I can't believe that our "sports" car lack the basic gauges like oil pressure, volts and boost.
baconbits Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 I will never understand why people care about volts. I'm not really worried about alternator or battery failure so it's not something I want clogging up my cluster.
SpecBFan Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 Here are some Defi BF link series gauges in a JCSpods triple A-pillar pod. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/29/y6ety9ev.jpg Personally I like they way it came out and love the fact that the gauges have the same start up sweep that the factory cluster has. Danteneon Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 If you are made of money, the Subaru STI gauge pack is pretty sweet. http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t36/danteomni/Car%20Pics/OBK/IMAG0230.jpg Matches factory lighting (slightly dimmer) and does the needle sweep as well. Not cheap though. I like to cook my pets and my family. Use commas. Don't be a psycho.
firehawk618 Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 I bought a dual pod from this guy. Arrived fairly fast for hand made goods. I have yet to install it but I must say it looks top notch! I also purchased a dual pod that goes in the cubby above the clock. Here's a link to his MS3 thread about the pods. He does make them for our LGT's also. Not cheap but it fits our cars properly. http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123753844-GB-Defrost-vent-pod-for-mazda6-mazdaspeed6 10' CTS-V, A6, Airraid, 2.4 upper, ID850's, self tuned. EDIT: NVM about the pricing, quick search of "Legacy GT STI gauge pack" found it. 10' CTS-V, A6, Airraid, 2.4 upper, ID850's, self tuned. SOLD:06' LGT Wagon. Holla Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 OEM is the way to go. The whole setup up was $700ish but it includes everything and it's pretty much plug and play. It's a big investment but it's easy to take out when you sell the car and used setups still fetch $600+. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/stevieteg/LGT_Interior_zpsb205abd7.jpg 2005 LGT 6MT Limited Wagon
dahoseman Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 Does anyone make any sort of ripoff version of the STi gauge pack?
LGTmakes3 Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 Voltage? Really? Guess you've never been stranded on the side of the road due to alternator failure. By the time the light comes on it's too late. Most gauge packages have a volt meter.
ehsnils Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 Especially with my set-up I would probably want to add a volt meter, even though I have a 170A alternator (OEM on the diesel). http://legacygt.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4681837&postcount=6846 At least I have found my boost gauge, so maybe I shall install it. When it comes to the A pillar install I'm a bit worried about the airbag there - I don't want to have gauges flying around the cabin if the airbag goes off.

kongzilla Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 If I had to choose 3 guages.... Boost, Oil, wide band. Thats all I care about.
rob-2 Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 If I had to choose 3 guages.... Boost, Oil, wide band. Thats all I care about. EGT would be better then wide band. Wide band is really over rated for anything but tuning.
ehsnils Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 oil pressure, EGT, oil temp, boost, battery voltage. But it depends on what you do too - are you pushing the limits of a tuned engine or are you driving under more ordinary conditions. Oil pressure is however very good to have since it can show you when mechanical things gets out of the normal before any serious problems occurs - even for normal driving. Only catch is that you have to learn what's normal first!
Markbo Posted December 30, 2013 Author Posted December 30, 2013 Thanks as usual iNVAR, those helped. Just cements my choice for not mounting on the dash. Now I just have to figure out which series of gauges match the OEM gauges best. Autometer's website is not much help. Most of the pics I see don't detail the gauges other than brand. I understand the Nexus line is discontinued. Which current line(s) match the look and lighting of our stock gauges best? The Prosport Halo series looks pretty close. iNVAR if I remember right, you have gauges that match the OEMs really closely. They are the degi - which series, Racer? Do they change with the dimmer?
iNVAR Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 NP. Defi Racer. They do not change with the dimmer and I don't believe ANYONE'S changes with the dimmer switch. Everyone's can DIM, that's easy because it's just a 12V signal line coming off an interior light like the cubby's light, but the dashboard dimmer dial is a digital adjuster so you can't just tap into it. The Defi Racer gauges are nice, but they have NO options/features built into them. And I mean NONE, AT ALL. The brightness is either dim, or full bright. There's no in between. I find that the gauges match up nearly perfectly at around a 3/4 setting on the dimmer switch and it dims appropriately to match.
Markbo Posted December 30, 2013 Author Posted December 30, 2013 Cool. Now if I can find a gauge pod bezel that fits the LGT. So far no luck. Auto Meter doesn't even list them on their site (I thought they were AM built) and all the others I have found are WRX/STI only.
LeggySue Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 i bought these from a user on here that makes custom gauge pods. its a dual pod that replaces your small vent by the steering wheel. the one with fixed fins. The pop in covers most the vent but has small fins to retain the functionality of the vent, that way the vent its not completely useless. they come in single double and triple. If you want daylight pictures i can upload some later.
Markbo Posted January 1, 2014 Author Posted January 1, 2014 Yes Please if you don't mind Sue. What brand/series of gauges are those?
Zac88 Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Is the STi gauge on the far right EGT or Coolant temp? EDIT: My bad its Oil Temp, is that really necesary? Wonder if you can change it to EGT
Holla Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 I really like the oil temp gauge. It's way more accurate then the stock water temp gauge. The water can appear to be at temp but depending how cold it is it can take the oil another ten minutes to reach temp. I don't boost my car until it reaches 90 degrees C, which is about normal operating temp for the oil. 2005 LGT 6MT Limited Wagon
AWDrift123 Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Here's my gauge mount. I had to take the air vent off and custom fit the gauge. Color matches very well too! http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j113/casanovaticdpj/Cockpit.jpg Boost gauge custom mounted in vent http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j113/casanovaticdpj/GaugeInstall.jpg Video of start up and rev
