ColoSoca Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Is the turbo heat shield necessary on a stock turbo in my 05 legacy GT? While trying to find out if my turbo was on its way out or not this past weekend I snapped off 4 of the screws holding the turbo heat shield on due to rust. I want to know if it is absolutely necessary to have or if I could go a month or so without one? And yes, I do realize they put it on there for a reason. But this is my daily driver, I don't tend to drive it hard nor long distances.
kzr750r1 Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Will not do any good for anything in the engine bay. Buy a new blanket for that thing and solve it.
12sechatch Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 it does quite a bit to prevent the top mount from sucking up heat. Necessary? no. Would I drive without one? no.
PtPixel Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 ^ Yup It's only there to prevent heatsoak to the TMIC. You'll have a large decrease in performance with no thermal protection as the heatsoak will decrease the efficiency and performance of the intercooler. Short term driving without one shouldn't cause any damage but the decrease in performance will probably make for some haywire boost control as you won't be hitting your boost targets. Get a blanket to wrap it in, they tend to perform better than a shield anyways.
JmP6889928 Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Thermal Zero makes a good blanket for about $50 and it's easy to put on and works great on VF40
ibr_adam09 Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 A blanket will do a better job than any heatshield anyhow. Your butt dyno isn't going to tell a difference.
.Catalyst. Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Thermal blanket + Heatshield FTW (line heat shield with DEI Reflect-a-Gold® too) You're fine for now - but keep your heat from the turbo contained. My spec.B [#163] Project Thread with Pictures Get CryoTuned!
