CovertRussian's 05 LGT Build Thread

love this thread! I do have a question though. I cleaned my MAF sensor and the Subie is idling a little rough. Do I just disconnect the battery and reconnect it to reset the computer?

To reset the ecu the battery route, unplug your negative terminal, go inside, press on the brake to help drain the left over charge, and you should be good. To make sure it resets let it sit at least 30min with battery unplugged.

Well you had a press for the bushings. Do you work in a repair shop?

Nope I work with computers, car work is my time away from the screen. I've done too much bushing work not to have a shop press, they are about $100 on Amazon primed (yes I'm a jerk that overnighted it for $4 :spin:). It did come in a little broken (the part that presses is bent). I was too lazy to ship it back (100lbs )...

I do need to get all of the press collars and doodads to make my pressing life easier.

Whiteline caster bushing impression update:

These bushings rock! The car handles great after the bushing install! Front end has a ton more traction now, also feels like turning radius at speed has been greatly reduced too (not that this car needed it with an awesome 35 foot turning circle!)

NVH barely increased, not all that noticeable, but I am on 100k mile stock suspension so other creeks could be masking it.

I've been eyeballing one piece lightweight crank pulleys since I did the timing belt on the Forester and saw how heavy stocker is. Plus they tend to separate and cause some destruction.

List of aftermarket pulleys and information: Crank Pulley List (Price, Weight, Part #'s)

I went with GrimmSpeed due to the heavier weight, it doesn't cause CEL's like others might when you use it with a lightweight flywheel. Plus Grimmspeed has timing mark and sells a kit for 08+ stretch belts (that I might convert to).

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=261015&stc=1&d=1516574036

For those that are curious, GrimmSpeed says the pulley has timing marks, they mean mark. It took me 5 minutes to find that single mark...

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=261016&stc=1&d=1516574036

I was under the impression that the pulley would be 2.6lbs, it feels heavy and is a very high quality piece, to my surprise it came out to be 2.05lbs.

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=261031&stc=1&d=1516574036l

Stock Pulley weighs a hefty 5.65lbs

Start removing all of the parts in the way, I was able to do it with the intake and rad fans in place.

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=261017&stc=1&d=1516574036

Undo the lock bolt then unscrew the alternator tightening bolt, you will have to push the alternator down to remove the belt.

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=261018&stc=1&d=1516574036

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=261019&stc=1&d=1516574036

Same deal for AC, undo the idler pulley bolt, that will allow it to freely travel, then unscrew the AC belt tightener.

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=261020&stc=1&d=1516574036

After the belts are off get a 22mm socket and a breaker bar. Make sure your handbreak is tight and put the car in 5th gear. Use the breaker bar to loosen the bolt, then remove it.

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=261021&stc=1&d=1516574413

I used a big screw driver to slowly wiggle the crank pulley off

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=261022&stc=1&d=1516574413

Notice the circular cut in my timing belt cover, also notice the glue on the AC plug. Looks like this car suffered from the crank pulley falling apart previously...

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=261023&stc=1&d=1516574413

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=261024&stc=1&d=1516574413

Install the new pulley, make sure it goes on the tooth correctly before you begin to tighten it

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=261027&stc=1&d=1516574413

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=261028&stc=1&d=1516574413

Manual calls for 33ft-lbs of torque, but then rotating it to 65*-75* which equals to around 100ft-lbs, GrimmSpeed calls for 94ft-lbs. Reason manual calls for the degree deal, is because the bolt might overstretch, if it does even torquing it properly might mean the crank pulley is still loose. I try to use new bolts for piece of mind for this reason.

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=261033&stc=1&d=1516574562

Reinstall the belts, make sure they are aligned on the crank pulley properly before tightening them or you will shred the belts. Then properly tighten them or they will squeak.

Gains

Now the moment of truth, you're $115 in and how much power does it gain you?

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=261031&stc=1&d=1516574719

Sadly loosing 3.6lbs from parasitic mass gained no power (in 2nd gear), at least GrimmSpeed didn't promise/advertise power gains. Usually lightweight and underdriving pulleys will gain you 5whp or so, guess all the power gain comes from underdriving and not from being lightweight.

I will say the motor did rev up smoother with the new pulley, I'm driving the car around right now to see if city MPG improves any.

At this point I would say only go lightweight if your current pulley falls apart and you need a new one anyway. My opinion may change once I drive the car in a spirited fashion after the MPG test.

Update 04-25-14: After driving for a while, it does seem like this pulley help improve my low end torque and the car likes being in 4th at 30mph a lot more. MPG gain/loss has been neglectable though.

I've thought about doing the lightweight pulley on my 2.5i to see if I could get a bit more acceleration out of it

Any help to an NA engine is good you probably will see a decent enough of a difference. Plus from what I read it makes a more noticeable difference on an auto.

This is the front passenger tire, definitely had noise to it. I think the torn LCA bushing caused this, so hopefully new ones are better about it. I rotated the tires so will see if it improves, otherwise could be busted dampers.

Might b e worn struts too. FYI that wear pattern will not get better... once worn into the tire it stays in the tire, but it is less noticeable in the rear.

Agreed, I got BC coilovers on the way (should be arriving today!). If I don't like how they ride (comfort wise), I also have Bilstein's on the way.

You ordered two sets of suspension? Classic Vadim...

Old habits die hard... I found BC coilovers on here for fairly cheap, then a few days later Spec B bilsteins show up for a great price. I had to get them incase the BC's were too uncomfortable.

I just installed the rear set (448lbs), got it to about stock height, test drove and it felt just as comfortable as stock. I'll try to install the front set tomorrow... will see how she feels.

I'm currently working on my Eibach/Koni setup. It should be in this weekend :)

Nice, let me know what you think of it. From my past experiences I'm done with drop in springs, either OEM suspension or coilovers

I like my BC's. I have the rears on 7 and the fronts on 9 for DD and it rides well within reason (although I have a lot of other suspension parts too but I would rather have it be tight and with less body roll than be squishy) for long distances. I've driven it 450 miles one way last summer for a slot car race and it was not uncomfortable at all on the highway. A little harsh on the in town stuff but I also am running SSR 18x8's with Federal SS595's so that contributes too.

I think you'll like them. Just make sure and play around with the damping and even run them softer than I have them. You can always make them stiffer easily enough. :)

Sadly today the harshness went up. I've seen this on all suspension sets, when you raise the car up the spring/damper over extend and it drives really smooth, but when it settles overnight on they get harsh. I think this might be fixable with a set of SWIFT springs, since they increase in stiffness linearly unlike typical coilover springs, see this thread for the SWIFT spring dyno test...

I'm also probably going to put 200mm springs in the rear instead of the shorter 180mm that they come with.

Starting to look for bigger non IHI turbos, quickly becoming against IHI turbo's and their issues.

I'm thinking 18g or 20g department, leaning towards the 20g. Not looking for too much power, probably under 300whp, just want to do it on lower boost then what a typical vf39 would do.

So I got my Eibach/Koni setup on my car this weekend. I love the ride! It handles like a dream and rides so much smoother than stock. Well, smooth in a sense that my car doesn't hit bumps like a tank but you feel more of the road now.

I have the Eibach (Epic) & Spec B Bilsteins (Spec C?) setup and love it. Have you received the Bilsteins you ordered? From what I've read/heard, Bilstein > Koni. Only benefit to Koni is that they're cheap. I'd rather have something I don't need to chop up/modify to work on the car.

Now if you could only get the Bilstein CO that Underdog has...
