Recommendations on a drop light?

Recommended Posts

  • I Donated

Requirements:

  • 30'+ cord on a retractable reel
  • Fluorescent or LED -- not incandescent
  • Must have an outlet on the light to plug in power tools/soldering iron/whatever

Was thinking of this:

...with this bulb:

...but open to suggestions.

Thoughts?

looks like that bulb is only 150 lumens, which is not nearly enough light output. i would look for something with 2-13 watt fluorescent bulbs and supplement with a larger cordless work light (like the big harbor freight one).

Why don't you get two separate things? I use almost always a car fluorescent light drop light (sealed so you can beat it up) It has two plugs on it. I also use a retractable reel with it that has four more outlets on it. How much light do you need to throw? I always felt that the drop lights like you have shown don't really do that much for lighting, and are too hot.. hence the car work light I use all the time. The LED light looks okay, but at 150 lumens is really low as froggert mentioned.

Cost, mostly. That and I rarely need more than one outlet.

Which one is this? Sounds perfect. Got a link or a model number?

So sorry, been really busy at work and I keep on forgetting to find it. here is a link to something similar... mine is older, but also has two sockets on it.

Okay I can't seem to find the exact one I have. Mine looks most similar to this one though. The only few caveats: Mine is definitely longer and outputs more than 13W of light most likely due to the larger fluorescent tube. It also has two sockets on the handle, not just one. As you can see with even this one though it's $14.99 at kmart. I have often seen the model I have at sears go for around $30 and sale for $19.99. But.. I can't seem to find a picture or a link to it. But.. you get the idea.. hit up your sears and see if you can find it.

I got a separate reel /extension cord that has four outlets and is fuseable which I have used to power my air compressor occaisionally.. but when it is full it always blows the fuse :) (Draws a lot of current when it hits full).

Not exactly what you're looking for but I can't be without the convenience of a good headlight. It's fantastic to have no light/cord get in the way, never having to reposition it, and my headlight puts the light right where is needed (with 3 brightness levels) handsfree.

if you really need light...

you can bleed the color out of the darkest crevice of any room with this, 750W max.

kit with a neat ultra-collapsible tripod stand, bulb, etc. totals like $175 altogether.

a bunch! stock up on the spf-50

they're actually deceivingly pretty tough ;) the beauty is though, you don't need it right on top of your project (unless you like to sweat :)); you prop it anywhere, it totally drenches the room...just something to consider. good luck with the shop!

The Tasco one looks nice, albeit somewhat expensive. The Chamberlain one is pointless for anyone who uses real air tools, though. It would definitely be cool if someone combined a 3/8" air hose and a fluorescent drop light into one reel, but I don't think that's going to happen.

My fiance gave me this one for my birthday:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005G2SEC8?pc_redir=1411031315&robot_redir=1

I have been using it for about 6 months. So far, so good. I do like the magnetic hook that is relocatable, and the shockproof LEDs work well. I got another Bayco reel that is just a retractable extension cord and mounted it near the light reel. Seems to be a fine setup to have them separated.
