Constant Pssshhhh sound

Shifted

Recommended Posts

Lil help guys?

I bought a decent 2005 subaru legacy gt turbo, has the SPT package/intake and low miles.

When you floor it everything sounds normal as far as I can tell. Turbo seems to work, when you let off I get the usual Psssht sound.

But, when Im going any speed over 20ish and I gently speed up I get this constant psssssshhhhhhhh sound, the more I push the pedal the quieter it gets until its seemingly silent. IS THIS NORMAL? Sounds like Im driving a spaceship down the road.

Being that the SPT package seems to be less common I cant find out if this is common or strange. Maybe some sort of air/boost leak? Seems to happen even under the slightest acceleration...

On a side note Im also getting a sputtering/bubbling/miss type feeling while stopped in gear, no check engine lights, no heating problems.

The engine is stock as far as I can tell.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Wow seriously? Im somewhat used to a turbo spooling sound, this one just sounded more like a dentist drill/spaceship and I thought although it sounded somewhat normal, it was just so much louder than I expected. It makes people look at us driving by from like 30-40 feet away.

If it is suppose I might look into getting the stocker ram intake and resonator/silencer.

Also dont like how the dang thing seems to be drawing hot air from right beside the engine...On a hot day it seems like the turbo is nearly useless after a couple few second boosts.

Also, pulled the left side of the intercooler to check for oil and I dont think it was oil, more like a slightly sooty/exhaust type deposit?

Had 3 sort of mechanics look at it.

One fella said it sounded normal, another said it sounded like it had a "low rpm boost leak" since it seemed to make the noise at like 2-3500 rpm and to look into replacing the actuator or possibly get an aftermarket BOV or maybe even getting the Turbo Rebuilt!?

Still another said to pull the intercooler to throttlebody hose and check for some rubber flap? that may come loose causing the same sound.

THATS WHY IM HERE, been on for a while learning, first real post.

Honestly I just dont want to screw the car up as its my womans only form of transportation and Im new to this amazing engine.

Lastly, My god it seems impossible for me to change the plugs on this car...

Im getting a slight hesitation upon idle and sometimes while speeding up, any ideas on where to start? Plugs/wires/coil packs? Stealership? Thanks again in advance for the responses man!!

See if you can get an accessport or tactrix and look at the fuel trims - they will tell you if you have a leak of some type. You can also use that to see if you've been tuned for the intake.

The turbo spool sounds more mechanical, my bet would be the wastegate, air rushing past it. Do you get no sound on very light acceleration (not enough to use the turbo?) and does it go away on full throttle (enough to close the wastegate)?

The SPT intake is bad for the engine without a tune - it can cause lean fuel trims. Also could be the cause of the noise, without the intake silencer the "air rushing" sound from the intake is much more noticable. If it was the intake then the noise would still be present at full throttle.

Yes, no sound upon very light acceleration and it goes away on full throttle. Its only there during gentle to medium acceleration.

I had assumed the same thing, that if the sucking sound was there at half throttle it should be there at full throttle just altered a little.

It sounds just like a soft version of the psssht you get after releasing, I have no idea if its on a stock tune but I assume it is. ALSO, if you release the throttle gently it will slip right back into the long sustained psssssh...

Im going for a quick ride to get a video/sound to see if it will narrow it down, but I think youre on to something. Sometimes when im pushing it just past the psssh sound I get wastegate chatter, then it goes silent..... Just found a site talking about adjusting the actuator/wastegate?

Ok here are 2 poorly filmed videos of the sounds/ let me know what you think.

Someone out there has to have had this same problem.

Edit- I pulled the heatshield and Im looking at the actuator but it doesnt appear to have any place to adjust it on either end?

After searching the forums it appears it has no adjustment. Not even sure if this is where I should start I guess.

I tried to put an external "helper spring" on the actuator as another thread said, but Im not sure I could tell a difference, it did still make the noise but it might have boosted a little stronger/quicker than usual.

When I stood outside the car and listened for the sound it appeared to come from the SPT filter/inlet hose?!! Is that even possible?

Thanks a mill for any help! Dont have much cash to throw at it right now so I have to nail it.

In for results, I have a strange noise that's not unlike this one and it's just started. I can't find the cause though. Almost sounds like air is sneaking by somewhere but I don't know where. I have yet to run a log and see what the numbers look like. GL!

Updated parts list since original part-out here.

My guess is it is part of the EBC. when you are at that throttle, the EBC is leaking air both to the actuator as well as back into the intake. when you are in higher rpms, you don't hear it because it is going completely to the WG actuator.

At least that is what I have told myself that noise is in my own car.
