Anopheles7777
Hey Subaru owners, I have a 1994 Legacy with ~130,000 miles on it. I'm new to Subaru's and I have a problem starting the car, as in you can't easily turn the ignition out of the "LOCK" position. Now the key looks pretty darned worn, so i'm thinking that it just doesn't fit properly anymore, so I can't start it. I'm thinking about just ordering a new ignition and putting it in, because other than that, the car runs great, just fine. Are there anythings I should consider before I order a new part? Any help or ideas would be appreciated before I do that. DISCLAIMER: I am not a mechanic, maybe 4 on a scale of 1-10. I've read instructions on how to do it...is this is something that you think would fix it? or would that be a waste of time and money. Thanks in advance!! Idaho subaru
I'd just go to a locksmith shop first. I just had a similar problem on a '97 I bought recently. The key would work in the ignition, but the doors were hard to get the key to turn, and the key wouldn't work the hatch lock at all. As with yours, my key was so badly worn, I knew they wouldn't be able to copy it. They ended up doing some magic on the computer, looking up the car and the cut of the key, and cutting me a new key from scratch. The scary thing is that it worked on all the locks, and it only took them about 5 minutes to lookup and make a key from scratch! I got two made, I think it ended up costing me about $10. Anopheles7777
thanks for the information there. And I am in the same boat, I look at the key and i'm like dang, I don't even know if they could cut it. It works fine on the doors, a little touchy on the trunk lid, but the ignition not a chance. I appreciate, I will look into that....
Anopheles7777
Well it turns out that it was indeed that the sole problem was that the key was so worn down that it would operate the doors, but just could not hit the tumblers in the ignition lock. I got a locksmith to make me a new key from scratch <not the cheapest thing, but cheaper than alternatives>, and I didn't have to replace the stock ignition switch from scratch, which I had read some folks had mixed results with. Thanks again!
Idaho subaru
Good deal. To me, the worst part about replacing the ignition switch is having two different keys for the car!
