Engine questions

Recommended Posts

I have a 1992 Legacy Wagon with a 2.2 which recently blew up. I bought a phase 2 ej22 and I'm having some complications with the swap. I have the engine wiring harness and ecu but my original 2.2 has the dual exhaust ports from the heads.... should I swap heads/manifolds and use my harness and ecu? Did I buy a worse engine? All help is appreciated.... I'm still wet behind the ears with Subaru's but I'm already in love with these boxers.

It would have been easier to use your I/m, and wiring since you can use any 2.2 I/m with any 2.2 heads. The difference In the heads is valve train is adjustable The dual port really only leaves you open to header and exhaust options...the phase 2 2.2 has a bit more power and a compression bump but is a valve interference motor. What year did you get the phase 2 out of? As far as I know only the 99 legacy and a handful of 2000 legacys have them. If I were you I would leave the dual ports and original I/m on the car and just use the phase 2 block. But that's only because I like headers :)

Edit: the phase 2 2.2 heads would have to be used with the phase 2 I/m, I forgot that Subaru lengthened the cam separations making the timing belt longer and the phase 1 I/m unusable on the longblock.

Of anything just use the block with the dual port heads, 22e has the biggest valves of any ej series, the phase two pistons are moly-coated and flatter, I believe the rods are still forged even < could be wrong about that. The 222 block is an all around better block than the 22e internally. Another thing im not sure of is if you would have to use the 222 crank gear

I don't know much about the 222, as far as power upgrades your really in the boat as the 22e...a hybrid style intake might work with the map sensor but I thinking you may need to tune it for better afr. You might even be able to blend the intake and exhaust ports like a mild port and polish, can get a regrind on your cams from delta but I haven't heard of anyone doing those grinds on a 222

First question is whhyyyyyy? 2000 2.2 is an interference motor with EGR and not really an improvement over your old 2.2.

Lots of old 90-94 motors out there that will drop in without major hassle. If you're looking for a project, you've got almost as much work on your hands as what you'd go through doing a turbo swap, save for having to change the crossmember and find a scooped hood.

Having said that, I don't see many ways that you could get it running without using the 2000 engine complete and swap harnesses/ecu, or just use the 2000 short block only with your heads/intake.

Yeah that's what I was trying to put out there, bigger valves, header options, higher than normal compression, and reliability. I think with the 22e heads on the 222 block will bring the valves into interference though..which may be good for you or not..I personally like the high compression wind up. But I'm not sure how much of a compression bump you will get..may get to 9.8:1as the original 22e had 9.3-5:1.

The ECU/Engine was $300 with under 150K on it. That's why I jumped on it... like I said I'm still wet behind the ears with Subaru's.. my original phase 1 2.2 had an awful knock so I'm not sure if my heads would be the best idea. Is it possible to switch the heads and it be cheap and easy? I'm on a very tight budget ** Thanks for all the input guys.
