steve118
i have a 1997 subaru legacy gt 5sp manual, but after a few days driving it i noticed that the temp gauge on the dash shoots through the roof after about 10 minutes of driving. is this part of a common fault? any ideas what it could be? any help appreciated, thanks btw, it has done 206k kms on body and 160k kms on engine standard parts
derp
could be the thermostat. I could suck start a snow blower.
monkeyposeur
It could be a bad thermostat, air bubbles in the coolant, or failing head gaskets. If the thermostat is not an OEM Subaru thermostat that can cause overheating as well. Purge the air in the system, and get a hydrocarbon test done which will test for exhaust products in the coolant. Check the overflow tank while the car is running and look for bubbles which can indicate failing head gaskets. Is there white smoke in your exhaust? Head gasket failure is almost inevitable on your model at some point.
steve118
no noticeable white smoke in the exhaust. Where can i find the overflow tank? sorry for sounding dumb, my first subaru.
IrishLt
Hopefully that showed up right. I like pictures when explaining things. Takes the guess work out of stuff. Here's hoping it's a T-stat. Good luck -LT PS- Try not to run it as is and let it overheat. The factory headgaskets are finicky enough on the 2.5s.
