duffney
I've almost got my 1998 Subaru Legacy's engine take down enough to where I can pull it to replace a head gasket. What tools and or methods are best for cleaning an engine? While I have it out I'd like to make it look new and clean the last 15 years of dirt out of it. Scruffy
simply green and elbow grease have always been my preferred method. I hear pressure washing works too, but I don't like to get my block wet, too much stuff that can go wrong.

Zues Marine
'Purple Power' is INSANE ... sprayed some on my crossmember that had about .33" of nasty oil/sludge build up and a few minutes later it almost just rinsed right off.. discolored paint a little though so id stick to just using it on the engine
duffney
Mostly outside cleaning, I'd like to have the block cleaned by a shop.
Tr00b
Hard to beat a hot tank on disassembled parts from a machine shop. But you aren't going that far... degreaser and a steam cleaner and lots of time.
pleaidestar
Purple power and a couple hours time will make a motor very clean..just cleaned 3 motors in the past month and all ej22 e phase ones with every imaginable seal leaking..best way for me to do it was to put some into a spray bottle and get it into the castings and little crevices let it sit for about ten minutes and spray it off, I used a karcher electric power washer with a degreased siphon tube to finish the cleanup...I was worried about what some degreasers do to aluminum, purple power completely washes away..I used la's best degreaser and it looked like the motor needed some cocoa butter.lol.. I repeated the cleaning steps three times in a couple hours and let it dry for another hour then I was ready to start taking I/m and crossovers and heads off. The motor is sitting in my spare bedroom right now.

monkeyposeur
I've used simple green and a lot of elbow grease, a wire brush, 3m pads and a screwdriver with great results. Problem is it takes forever. I've also used Gunk but it seems toxic. I have also pulled a motor and took it to the car wash and sprayed it with the engine degreaser. I wasn't too worried about contamination since I was splitting the block anyway.
