How to: Transmission Cooler Installation

Recommended Posts

I would also think the outside temps would make a big difference in the tyranny oil temp too.

^agreed. I forgot to update this thread the other day but I got the thermostat in a took a 3 hour round trip to the casino. Temps stayed steady at 150 in about 30 degree weather. It rose quickly if I stepped into the throttle but quickly fell back down once I let off. When I pulled off the highway, temps were around 157-175 depending on if I was accelerating or not. No I guess the thermostat never opened and it was doing its job. Time will tell if anything changes in higher temps.

I keep having customers over-cooling their ATF because they plumbed their coolers wrong. You can hardly tell with a stock valve body, but with a modified valve body it can make the transmission unhappy. In either case, it's not good.

Now I am not expert but... on the Hayden website:

http://www.haydenauto.com/Installation-FAQs/Content.aspx

it states this:

Q. Should the cooler be installed before or after the radiator?

A. Hayden recommends installing the auxiliary cooler after the radiator to return the coolest fluid directly to the transmission. Installing the cooler before the radiator will still provide additional cooling and may be necessary in some difficult access applications.

Q. Can you over cool the transmission fluid?

A. Transmissions are not highly sensitive to cool operating temperatures. However, in sub-zero (20-30° F) weather conditions transmission fluid can actually gel up in an external cooler and cease to flow, causing damage. Use of the radiator cooler actually helps warm the fluid under these conditions. It is critical in extreme cold conditions to use the original equipment cooler in series with the auxiliary cooler and allow the vehicle to warm up before driving.

So this statement makes me ask this: What damage does a over cooled transmission beget?

Bump for an answer to the above.

If the only downside to overcooled ATF is harder shifting, then what's so bad about it?

Also, does this mean that in colder temps, one must drive faster/harder to overcome overcooled ATF symptoms?

It might *feel* like harder shifts at times with cold fluid, but I believe the reality is that the clutch packs are more likely to slip with cold fluid, and that's what causes damage.

You could drive harder, but you are best to have a setup that takes care of itself, I.e the proper sequence of a transmission cooler and a fluid thermostat. I'm on my phone so can't really search, but I think climberd has a thread on that as well.

I just want to confirm the flow of ATF through the system. I'm installing a fluid thermostat to prevent overcooling the fluid and I have to be 100% sure of the direction so I finally bit the bullet--unhooked the lines and started the car.

With 100% certainty, the line towards the rear of the car (without the inline filter) is the return line. From what I gather, this means that the stock system goes from transmission, through the filter, into the radiator, out of the radiator, back to the transmission.

Any pics of the fluid thermostat install? I have been running a standalone cooler and Radiator for about 3 years now . No thermostat but my temps don't usually go below 15-20 degrees F. I have seen somewhere in this thread a statement about lock-up not taking place until 160*F so i assume there is slipping? any input? Does any one know where the info is? i looked but could not find it. it really matters to me with an 05 wagon that makes 350 whp. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks and apologies for the redundancies in advance.

Can anyone tell me for sure if I can mount the 4452 if I have hellas in the front with subimods bracket? I looked through here and saw one person went with the 4451 because he was worried about fitment with hellas but I didn't see any definite answer. From the pics I see of some installs it appears it could fit snug. Im aware you have to install the 4452 and 4454 vertically. Thanks for any help.

Edit: Nvm I just looked at some pics I had with my grille off and it doesn't look like it will fit with the tc needing to be mounted vertically. I'll have to go with the 4451 I guess.

Really? That's great news. Got any pics? Would like to see exactly where you mounted it and how it looks. Thanks.

Here you go.
