Ivant
I am wondering what model car I have. It was registered on the 26-02-1997. It's a legacy with a 2.2L engine and whenever I have to get parts or anyone asks what year it is, I say 1997. But I am wondering if it's a 96 model. Looking at the owner's manual I see that it was printed in July 1996. Anyone know ? The chassis no is 017614 and the engine no is 413439 if that's any help. Stevo F
I think Subaru starts manufacturing the the next next model year about the middle of the year before (i.e. the '88 GL hatchback I used to own was built in June, 1987), so I'm betting you have a 1997 model. My current 1998 Legacy was built in October, 1997. Also, I know cars here in the U.S. usually have a sticker under the hood that lists the model year, and the month/ year of manufacturer should be on a sticker on the driver's side door jamb (again, at least here in the U.S. it is). Stang70Fastback
Yup. My '98 was built in '97. Standard practice for most manufacturers.
Kennyfvholla
In general, The Legacy's from MY97 and MY96 are closer in their shared part designs than MY97 and MY98... The MY97 Legacy shares very few part designs with the 98/99 vehicles.

Just had a look on the door jam that is on the passenger side here. Our cars are RHD in NZ, and it said Body build 1995. So god knows what model my car really is ? johnegg
what is the letter in the 10th position in the VIN? that will tell you the year. S = 95 T = 96 V = 97 W = 98 X = 99 Z = 00 i think 01 = 1 02 = 2 03 =

I know this has already been definitely answered but an easy way to tell the 1996 model from the 1997 is the lack of air scoop on the hood for the 1996 model year. Stevo F
Not all Legacy's had the hood scoop (I wish my '98 did!)
blankdeluxe
Scoops came with the GT's and some but not all Outbacks. Its really hit and miss with the scoop hoods.
johnegg
this is not a perfect list, maybe, but from my experience 95 - 96 outback = no scoop 95 - 96 GT = no scoop 95 - 99 L, Brighton = no scoop 97 - 99 outback = scoop 97 - 99 GT = scoop not sure about the LSi. some of the high end cars 90 - 94 had them as well, but not many. Now that I know what year my car is, I was wondering is my 2.2L engine a motor that will suffer valve damage if the cam belt breaks. It would be nice to know one way or the other for piece of mind. The belt was done 70.000 ago and I'm sure none of the runners or tensioner were replaced.
Stevo F
Al of my research shows that the SOHC EJ22 is a non- interference engine, so it shouldn't suffer any damage if the belt were to break. I was glad about that on my '71 Pinto I had when I was a kid- we broke 2 timing belts, stuck a new one and kept driving (even put one on in a dark parking lot at night). johnegg
correct, the 96 ej22 should be non-interference. the double check is if the engine has HLAs, hydraulic lash adjusters. if the engine has standard screw and lock nut valve adjusters it is probably interference.
