Need some help

Recommended Posts

Just took ownership of a 2010 Legacy GT Limited, but I've come to the conclusion that it would kill me to drive it in any poor conditions (it's becoming a garage baby). But I was really beginning to think about buying an older LGT, like a 98 or 99, and making that my other car, and my go to car for weekend rallies and other similar events. If any of you would have any advice I'd love to hear it. I'm also not opposed to buying a fixer upper. So the possibilities are endless!

Buy a southern car if you want to be able to work on it :-)

The GT's didn't really get fun until 2005. Prior to that they were mostly appearance packages here in the USDM. Same engine as nearly every other car in Subaru's stable. 165hp 2.5 with not a lot of paths for performance upgrades that don't involve repowering. They were never turbo'd until 2005, nor did they get particularly fancy suspension or brakes.

H6 3.0 was a nice motor but it only came with a slushbox attached, and was never an option in the GT. . . Outback exclusive. If that doesn't bother you, they're great cars. 3.0's would outrun the GT's of that generation anyway. If you don't like the lifted look, buy a 3.0 Outback and put regular Legacy struts & springs under it and you've got yourself a decent sports sedan. Pop the spacers out from the front/rear subframes and change the front bumper (losing the cool and functional Outback fog lights in the process, however) and you would have a car cosmetically identical to a GT but with about 50 hp more giddyup.

Still no easy upgrades for power with the 3.0, tho.
