inner and outer tie rods

Recommended Posts

Hello,

so a subaru tech was doing an inspection on the car and told me I wouldn't pass because the inner tie rod is bad (shook the front left wheel while on a lift and it was moving side to side). So I'm in the process of ordering both inner tie rods but just wondering if I should do outers are well while I'm at it. Any form of input would be greatly appreciated =)

thx!~

How many miles are on these tie rods? Are you doing the repair with the proper tools. If it was me I would replace both as its a small cost for both and having to realign the car if you have to replace the outter later is like a 40-70 hit when you could spend the 40 now and save the inconvenience

Reason for asking about the tools is because if using a ball joint fork 99% of the time you rip the boot on the outter. If it was me I would replace them both myself and get a alignment after. Separating the the tie rod from the knuckle is simple if you replace the tie rod. Jack up front remove wheel, loosen Nut, screw nut back on 4-5 threads hit nut with BFh till tie rod drops, remove nut. Inner= cut clamp for inner tie rod cover, pull cover back, take large screw drive and pry lock ring tabs back, take crescent wrench and remove inner while holding rack with crescent wrench. Then take your old the rod abd assemble the new one to the same lengths and old assembly. Tighten the lock nuts, don't forget to install boot before you put the inner and outter together. Install in reverse order put a tiny dab of blue lock tight on inner tie rod to rack.

I tend to always replace the outer tie rods when doing inners.

The wheel shaking can also be other things -- make sure the tie rods are bad. Wheel bearings, ball joints, even the steering rack itsself etc. Unless you can really see play in the inner tie rod (which I have never seen on any of my 6-7 Subarus BTW).

Buying Moog parts off Amazon will probably be cheaper than the stealership will want for OEM parts. Don't forget to grease the inners well, and tighten up the boots. Best to just get new ones while you are in there.
