  1. Busy weekend with the car in the air! After operating with the P0420 Christmas tree dash for a month it needed to happen.

First thing was the O2 sensors. Both pre- and post-cat replaced. Thankfully they were easily accessible and broke loose without too much fight. After watching a YouTuber have to torch one off I was a tad nervous. Access through the fender is a pain but not as bad as these gd headlights! Easy swap.

Last week I got the AT oil temp light out of nowhere. Shut off and restarted the car and it went away. So did a partial drain-fill of the CVT. I opened the fill plug with the front jacked up and it spit out about 1qt. Wonder if it was a bit overfilled... Leveled the car and drained another 1.5 from the pan before closing it up. Refilled as much as I could with the car idling for 10 minutes. Soob says I need a "CVT relearn" but three short trips later and I haven't noticed it driving any differently. No lights or codes are on... I may do another drain the pan entirely and pay my dues to the stealership just for peace of mind...

Changed the oil and threw on a fumoto valve. No leaks with the provided gasket so far but I'll keep an eye on it. Sits well up and would take a very unfortunate scenario to contact it at all. I'm not worried.

New front and rear diff gear oil. Bought at 103k now at 106 and didn't look like either had been changed based on the glitter bomb from the rear. But nothing like that tooth I remember seeing one of y'all pull out. Front was a bit lighter colored but had some dust on the bolt magnet. 100k mile gear oil stinks like something else.

New PCV valve may be the easiest maintenance job I've ever done. Old one still clicked but was gummed up a bit.

Also did the half-assed steering fluid change (suck out and refill a few times) and will probably do that again a few times.

Only a few new knuckle wounds and she still runs, so that's good. Any else notice how beer consumption triples when a wrench is in your hand?

  2. Finally got around to discretely mounting and wiring in my dash cam. That clip in the A-pillar is a real witch to get free. If anyone has more experience with which fuses are always-on (battery direct) vs ignition-on I don't have a clear sense of which ones are always powered and like a true DIYer found out partway they that I dint have a working voltage meter. Just want to make sure I didn't wire this in incorrectly. I used the "TRAIL/R. FOG" for battery according to an outback forum post.

Hopefully it isn't needed for anything other than idiot watching...

    Edited so photos worked...

  3. It hasn't moved since March 21st

I hear ya! Since March 12, I haven't driven more than an extended grocery run. The wife has been driving miss leggy since I've been sequestered into our isolated brick box of safety. Can't say I get the same personal enjoyment, but its a damn fine looking pair pulling into the driveway...

I never thought I'd miss my commute this much. Despite the seven-star forum, I don't think its even the car. Regardless, I'll be extra sure to take the windy way home once things are back to normal.

  4. Get one that has both a front and rear cam. Also resolution and night clarity is key - the last hint you want is a blurry, indecipherable license plate driving off. I wouldn't worry that much about size (to an extent) since it'll be right next to/behind your rear view and doesn't really block anything.

I have a Viofo A129 in my 4runner and have been super impressed with the quality and how easy it was to get the functions working right. Already saved us over a grand when the missus was rear ended and bent up the exhaust.

  5. Took my 10 LGT to the dealership to have my ebrake and airbag recalls done. I asked for a loaner for the day and dude comes out with a 14. I'm like dude I own one of those I really wanted a outback, but whatever. Things I noticed right away was the lack of power [emoji38][emoji38][emoji38]. My thought the whole time driving was ,"OMG I've been reduced down to a lowly NA." LOL. Other things are it does ride stiffer compares to my 10, mine has about 62k miles and the loaner had about 50k so pretty close to milage on the suspension. And the CVT is LOUD, I mean I don't think I could live with it loud.

I had an 01 outback and that thing had wind noise, exhaust leak, the stereo never could turn off all the way, basically that car always had some kind of noise and the CVT was worse than that.

Of course here's me also thinking if take the loaner to my cousin's house (she has a 12 legacy) swap out the headlights and front bumper from the loaner to hers and bring the loaner back, would the dealer ship notice? Then of course I would be putting the loaner parts onto my car lol. bc3589de1111674e3140cad8386d59c6.jpg

I haven't driven an MT for these models, so I don't have a true frame of reference. But I don't think its too bad...? My 13 has a pretty loud whine when cold at ~15-20mph, but other than that, it's much quieter than my older MT was - especially at speed (wind/road noise aside). Absolutely true about the gutless feel but have pity on us "lowly" NA plebs! :icon_frow

I'm not going to touch your foray into petty theft.

  6. I am looking at a used 2013 Legacy. It's the Premium model with the 2.5 engine. Is this generally considered a good car? Consumer Reports gives it a much above average rating but thought I'd check here too.

It's a great car! They made a few minor upgrades that year - timing chain (not belt) and improved reliability of the transmission. A few others but those are the main ones.

That said, I despise the automatic trans on this car. It's pretty sluggish and just not very fun to drive. I'm coming from an older leggy 5MT which was not quick by any means! But you can really feel the extra size these cars have put on. Also changing the headlights is a pain. Everything else has been amazing. Handles like a champ in snow and is a super comfy ride.

  7. Shit really got real in my house this week. My wife is in medical residency and they are re-deploying nearly everyone from her program to emergency medicine. Including attending physicians who have been working in specialized fields for years. It's a complete cluster in hospitals right now, folks. And from everything I've seen, we aren't even near the peak impact on our healthcare system yet.

    Stay safe out there.

  8. Is there a general thread on here for questions or feedback? I'm happy to move this.

Anyways, I just threw a P0420 with CEL, flashing brake light, and flashing cruise control on my stock 2013 2.5i. Lots of info on modded pipes and tunes, and obviously I know it's a below-efficiency cat warning. But I can't find much on what people have done for fixes on here. Just trying to see what worked for people other than throwing money at a dealer/exhaust shop. She only has 105k so I doubt it's the cat gone bad.

My first inkling is a bad O2 sensor or shoddy gas and I should seafoam flush and reset the brains. The last two fillups were Kroger so I doubt it's the gas. Also live in MI so emissions is just a meaningless word so looking into the rear spacer fix. Just hate to see the Christmas tree dash. If anyone else has done either of those and it's worked I'd love to hear your experience.

  9. While I agree with you on the overall dislike, I'm a bit less militant about it. I just don't think there's anything remarkable about the car. It looks like any other mid sized sedan. They killed the more distinctive subaru style hence my general "meh" feeling about it. But to be honest that started a few gens ago, it has just finally reached the line for me.

  10. Haha good timing though because I have a cart full of LEDs for nearly every bulb in the car from Superbrightleds I was just about to purchase.

I'm interested in what issues have people had with LEDs in turn and brake? Based on my research here there is just the issue with hyperflashing that is remedied with the tap touch module. Certainly don't remember reading anything about setting off warnings... You're right about the cost being 3x more, but for peace of mind that they'll outlast the damn car I'm ok with that.

  11. 2013 Graphite Grey

    31 and still a child

Currently back in grad school for biz supply chains/ops sustainability - but previously an environmental consultant

Third Subie; learned to drive on a ' 90 legacy wagon 5mt, then 04 35th anni legacy 5mt. Both passed away well before their time was up...

Not going to performance mod it. I've already stuck in interior LEDs, plan for headlights and other exterior LEDs, swapped fluids (steering, oil, brake, soon to do trans), and going to swap in my 04's atoto a6 touchscreen once I figure out how to address amp issues!

Love the community already. Keep the info flowing, getting into petty arguments, and talking shit - that's what makes a forum great. Glad to be here.

  12. The x5 is rated at 6k lbs towing. And the reviews are really positive for towing. Which was what drove that idea. We generally have to tow without water and evenly distributed supplies to keep the tongue weight down. The ascent really does well. But, I would like another option to save some wear on it. The 3/4 ton would be to future proof our towing needs, in case we get a heavier trailer.

This is a hard zag from the recommended and more luxury-oriented x5 or sq5, but my other mobile is an '03 4runner. Those trucks are bombproof, have insane amounts of weeknight driveway mods, are fun and almost designed to wrench on, and have some serious juice (talking about the v8).

I'd encourage you to look at a 03-09 limited v8. Lots of inventory with lowish mileage (~100k). The limiteds mix a nice interior and solid road noise with full sick-truck-bro offroad and towing ability. Ride quality is a bit compromised, but my wife honestly digs the big, bad, on-frame truck feel over my leggy. There's also a solid t4r community that will help you out a la here. And you get toyo parts and reliability instead of an ugly German bill... Don't say we didn't warn ya!

  13. I just went with a new Pioneer AVH 210EX, with bluetooth & back up camera, to avoid problems with the factory camera. The last question i have is i would like to retain the factory usb, aux input in the console will this work https://www.ebay.com/itm/PAC-USB-SB1-Subaru-Radio-USB-Port-Input-Retention-Cable-Car-Audio-OEM-Replace/271425349992?epid=1519804596&hash=item3f32362968:g:RfQAAOxyeR9TIzK8 It says only for Legacy 2012, i thought they didn't change them until 2015? If this wont work, does anybody know what will? Thanks

Good luck! :munch: Take some photos and let us know what you learn. I'm not tackling mine until spring.

If your Pioneer has a USB input in the rear, then that one should work.

  14. What mileage should it be considered to change the plugs? I have 86k so I know it will be a long time until I have to worry about that.

Subaru recommends them at 60k. But honestly, they're made much better material (especially the Iridiums) than they used to be, so people can get over 100k on a single set. I'm not recommending that, just stating that it's not uncommon.

  15. Yes. That is the one Crutchfield sells. They even had me connect it to the computer to reset it and program it for my specific head unit.

Could you provide any more info on integrating your camera? Is the factory camera not just a single 3.5 mm aux jack you would install directly into the rear of the aftermarket stereo?

edit: Not trying to hijack your thread schrack, I'm just super interested in ripping that goddamn nav system out as well and have an ATOTO I installed 5 months ago in my old legacy I'd love to swap in.

  16. I did it..It was in a post a few months ago. In January 2019 metra released a kit for the nav system. The only difference is the wiring harness called out. The non nav called 70-7552, the nav requires 70-7553. The 70-7553 works with premium sound systems (H/K and others)

A car with factory navigation comes with the HK system automatically.

Steering wheel controls are ASWC-1, purchased via metra

Go to metraonline.com put in your cars configuration and it'll give you everything you need. Or PM me and i'll give you the list.

Did you do a write-up or take any photos during the install? I did a stereo in my old car so I'm assuming a similar process, but it didnt have a back-up cam, amp, or steering controls so I'm timidly approaching this one.

    Cheers.
