  1. I don't know about you guys but I have a 2015 Legacy 2.5 Limited with Eyesight. I have the fog lights that when the headlights are on, come on when you are turning and light up the side of the road in the direction of the turn. I like that feature and would certainly not want to disable my fog lights for that reason alone.

We are talking about that feature. Not looking disable the fogs, only the steering responsive feature. I'm glad you like it, but some of us don't.

  2. Well duh...I didn't even think of that:lol: you're right, "base" pkg 21 model Limiteds have standard fog lights meaning they use the stalk mounted switch, but no EyeSight and therefore no SRF. So your solution is in this mess of a wiring diagram that I'm too tired to attempt to comprehend at the moment.:p

    Great info, thanks again!

I've spent some time with this today and here's what I've found:

    - the two (L&R) fog fuses in the main fuse box (under the hood) are likely needed for fog operation, regardless of whether or not the vehicle has SRF.

    - it appears, based on the diagram, the signal wires to the fog relay are different, depending on SRF equipped or not. I say this because the diagram shows signal wires to the relay in two positions, but there is only one fog lamp relay in the fuse box.

    - based on the second diagram; there shows a 7.5a fuse associated with the SRF module. I pulled that fuse and it also kills the fogs and HID headlight leveling system.

I'm starting to believe this is impossible, with the electronics so integrated as they are on these cars.

Thanks again for the research and information!

  3. Here's what the FSM says:

    So we go here:

Don't rip everything to pieces like it says, just drop the lower dash panel:

    http://i.imgur.com/DHyAZrQ.jpg

And the control module is this:

    http://i.imgur.com/JT7Eky6.jpg

I unplugged it, started the car, and immediately got "SRF OFF" on the dash. Fog lights would not work. Plugged it back in, fog lights work. So it cannot be unplugged without disabling fogs completely.

So more digging brought me to these diagrams:

I would start with the fuses, pull 1 at a time and see what happens. Presumably the 2 under the hood are for each respective fog light.

Another thing to try would be tie wires 3 and 10 together to connect the outputs in parallel. But chances are that would just make both fogs activate when steering rather than just the one.

Since there is no obvious connection for the steering angle sensor the communication is going over the CAN system. Removing 1 or both of those might do the trick.

I'm really not interested in hacking up my car for the sake of something I'm not personally interested in, but I thought I'd get this information out there for anyone who wants to attempt it on their own. Typically the factory connectors have pins that are removable, so I would look at pulling the pin out to disconnect for testing purposes before straight up cutting wires.

    Outstanding information, thanks very much!

I'm wondering if the non-eyesight equipped 3.6, which has HID, has a different fog light module than the SRF cars? If it does, it may be as easy as a module swap. I'll try the fuses when I get time, but I'm guessing they exist for non SRF cars too.

In the meantime, I installed some VLED brand LED bulbs in the fogs. I also aimed them, as they were all wonky from the factory. The bulb color makes them less noticeable as I'm driving, but disabled is still my goal.

Thanks again. I'll update when I know more.

  4. I did some digging in the FSM, there's a SRF control module located behind the relay pack under the dash. It's possible that unplugging that may disable them. It may disable the fogs completely though.

Thanks! If you care to investigate further and solve my dilemma, I'll buy dinner. Alternately, would you be able to post an image for reference? :)

  5. So I'm looking to get some wheels for the spring and summer but I'm debating now on size, 18", 19" or 20".

I'm in Northern NJ and there are pot holes. Should I just get the 20", be careful and accept the ride comfort it will have? I will also lower the car about 1 inch.

I know it's mostly my personal preference on what to choose but why are most people not going to 20"?

This person is on IG and told me his are 20" and fenders are rolled.

I'd never run 20's on this car. I nice 18" setup would be ideal. There is a good article that discusses the trade offs as you move to +1, +2, +3 setups. In general, the wheel & tire combo gets heavier and the performance gains are negligible. Acceleration suffers and with the stock suspension on these cars, you won't be doing anything good moving to 19 or 20.

Also, when wheel shopping I always look at the weight and then the styles available. Unsprung weight is the enemy, especially if you have the 2.5.

Edit: ignore the above if you're only after looks. ;-)

  6. Hello all, Ok here we go I have yet another question. I was talking to a guy (not in a dark ally) about some rims and tires from a lexus Is something or whatever and he said he wanted to sell me his staggered (nice) rims for $500 I quickly said yes (then that taste came in my mouth of what did I just do to myself) then realized I know nothing about fitting rims and may have just shot myself. All I know is they are the same bolt pattern BUT does that mean I can use them and will it have a negative effect on my baby? HELP!!

So....you were in a alley with a dude, you said yes, then got a taste in your mouth. You were new and this and now you're worried about your baby. Did I get that right?

  7. It only took them a couple of hours...I dropped the car off at 1 and it was done by 4:30. There is also supposed to be an update for my infotainment unit, but I was told by the dealership that it would be $122 to hook up my car and check for an update. If there was no update, I was still out the $122. If there was an update, I wouldn't have to pay any additional funds. Lol...I said no thanks...

It should still be under warranty.

  8. Here's the response from Subaru:

    ------------------

Thank you for contacting Subaru of America, Inc.

    * I suppose the more inquiries they receive the more likely a software tweak could occur.

  9. Just an FYI

(I'm hoping this can be added to the Lighting threads for future reference).

I have a 2017 Outback, but I've also found some valuable info on the board, so I wanted to share what I discovered today:

I dislike the Steering Responsive Fog Lights (SRF) feature, and I know many others do too. Today, I unplugged the switch from up and behind the dash, to see if it would render the "feature" inoperable. No joy. The SRF default position is "on" and disconnecting the switch retains that setting. I wanted to share and hopefully save someone else the trouble of looking for the answer.

I did email Subaru and will update this post if & when they respond, about a dealer setting to disable.

  10. Unfortunately what looks ok to you vis a vis glare for other drivers means very little because it fails the tests of science:

    or

If you have opened a Subaru headlight, the stock halogen projectors have a bent piece of metal "squirrel finder". This pops some amount of light upward to illuminate street signs. If you look at a proper HID projector, ie a Morimoto D2S, there is a completely different focal point and a clear cut off with no squirrel finder.

There is no comparison, just because you don't get pulled over does not make it safe for other drivers, or just because it looks brighter to you does not mean the light is actually focussed as well as the stock set-up for distance, and it that squirrel finder is there, there is no proper cut off, etc.

It fails the smell test, even if it passes the seat of the pants test for you. Aftermarket sellers of kits that are illegal to install in your OEM headlight housing please speak up now...

PS: I ordered an HID kit for the WRX, before it arrived I decided to open the headlight and bend down the Squirrel finders, figured out I should do a proper refit, and ended up with D2S. If you are going to do an HID upgrade, you should replace the projector. There is no comparison between the lightweight (and cloudy lens) stock halogen projector and a Morimoto version, and other than opening the headlight and doing a proper install, cost is not significantly more to do it correctly. Or do as I did, and only shop for cars with OEM HID or LED lights, which is one of my new criterias for my cars.

Actually, Subaru projector headlights work quite well with HID retrofits. In my 2011 I did extensive testing, including several runs in front of and oncoming in another vehicle. I did these tests multiple times, in multiple days, in clear and rainy conditions. Between tests I swapped between Halogen and HID. Was it the opposition from "Internet Forum Lawyers" that had me worried? No, I was just concerned about glare and safety for other motorists.

While they are technically "illegal", so is driving 5 mph over the speed limit. Unless the lamps are poorly aimed or have a very blue color temp, being stopped just isn't a realistic concern. Based on my testing, neither is danger to oncoming vehicles.

I'll get your Junior Trooper badge in the mail promptly. No, you don't get a gun. Guns are scary and dangerous.

    ;-)
