As far as the repeat, yea, it resets every time you turn your car off.

 

That's actually normal? Damn, I was thinking it was the board and just not going to worry about it (cost/benefit type thing but if that's normal, that's pretty pathetic (not you Jazzy - SOA)....

 

Since I have kids, it's tough to leave all the others out. Though I generally just hit previous on the cd every 2 or 3 times I get in and it's fine so far...

Quick comment/question -

 

Jazzy - what would you expect the no-cd version to cost when you are done? I realize a specific price would be hard to say (and I wouldn't want to hold you to it) but a range would be nice. I have the current one (one of the orig. batches I believe) and have been using it for several monts and LOVE IT. However, a no-cd version would be of great interest. Just to give you an idea - in the $100 range, I could see not needing the blank cd anymore. However, in the $250+ it really wouldn't be worth the expense to me.

 

Also - anyone else have issue with the random/repeat play? Mine always seems to turn off every time I turn the stereo off. Every other car radio I've had always keeps the random on when I power the car off. Seems odd. Wasn't sure if there was a relation to the board (not bothersome enough to remove it and try but curious if others found that as well.

 

About the iPod from the recent posts - I have a 2nd gen I use and put it to the left of the shifter. It's slightly under the e-brake handle. The center button is a bit hard to get to, but forward, back and pause are easy. I ran power/aux out from right under the trim and put some black tape to hold it up. Can barely see the tape when you are out of the car, and when you are in it's next to your leg I'd prefer on the dash, but mine is too big. A mini or nano might fit there though.

That was me - didn't work It played - or at least the timer was going, but it blanked the signal, so nothing came out of the speakers. I've been playing with trying to make a longer cd since Jazzy mentioned someone had created a 3hr one (so it must be possible playing with bit rate and such. So far no luck...

 

Any concern about burning up the CD motor or overheating the CD if played a lot on a long drive?

 

Can't imagine how - what if you just listened to a cd across country? Wouldn't be any different. The fact that there is nothing playing shouldn't affect the cd mechanism - it wouldn't know or care. It's still sending a signal regardless.

I have read a lot of it and did not see anything exactly like this. Also, I do not want to make any mods that cannot be removed - hense no cutting/splicing/etc... It has to be able to be returned to normal in case of warranty issue.

 

Tried it today and was getting some static driving. Am going to try the mp3 cd - last time I put it in it played, but nothing came out. Not sure how long it will play though. Should be interesting...

The 1/8" mini is a stereo jack. Only one plug, but three connections (l/r/g). RCA is only a 2 connection plug (l/g or r/g) so a cable from 1/8 to rca would be one 1/8 on one end (stereo) to 2 rca on the other (also stereo). An 1/8" splitter would separate the signal(stereo) to two connectors.

It's really not that big a deal. Just hit back when you get in the car every once in a while (ie start the track over).... otoh, I put an mp3 cd in to see if it would work (it didn't but it played a track 1 as if there was one, just no noise. Don't know how long it would play, but it's worth checking out as well. If it's not actually playing the song, it may go on indefinitely.

OK - I made a fascinating discovery (not sure if it's been noted before, but I haven't seen anything about it). I had the radio on and all of a sudden the music was messed up. I realized that I had hit play on the ipod and it was coming through with the radio on. Got me to thinking - might not need a blank cd if you could have the unit on but without it playing anything. Currently - I have an old fm modulator that I hard wired in the back of the wagon (where the 12v socket should be that blanks out 88.3 - no static (well hardly any) and it seems to work. If anyone can think of another way to do this, I'm open to suggestions...

 

btw - I'm using Jazzy's board - hence the post in this thread

 

In retrospect, it makes sense. Why bother cuting the input from the cd, when they just turn the cd off when it's not in use...

Yes, there is. Follow Jazzy's directions exactly in the setup and check the head unit circuit board. The directions are dead on perfect - but the cable only has pins on one side and the connector in the head unit only has pins on one side. If the cable is backwards, they pins won't line up. When I got the board, the cable was in backwards, and it took a while for me to figure it out. However, once I noticed that, it worked like a charm.

Requested a board Mon. AM, got response and paid Mon. pm. Got said board Wed - how awesome is that!

 

Install went very well except for one problem - the ribbon cable that came with the board was put in backwards. I didn't even notice until I looked into the headunit and saw there were connectors on only one side of the socket and the wires were on the other - lol. No big deal - I can't believe he put together so many to begin with....

 

I hooked it up and voila - it's terrific! I did need the gli with my ipod - I picked one up at Radio Shack for $17. Got a couple of adaptors and I've mounted my ipod to the right of the shifter, sticking out from the end of the emergency brake. I can see the display and hit forward/reverse w/o any problems.

 

I almost want to say thanks to Subaru for making the head unit impossible to switch out, because I don't really want a new one, and if you could swap it, no one would have gone to the trouble to develop this alternative
