It's mechanical noise. The motor on the CD player is screwed up.
Is it mechanical noise you're talking about or noise coming through the speakers? -
Ok, I put everything back to the way it originally was, and the CD player is working. It makes a lot of noise when inserting or ejecting a disc, though.

Well, I took everything back apart again, and made sure everything was pushed all the way in and the ribbon was lined up the right way. I put it back in the car but it still had the same problem. I don't see how your board could have messed it up...
crap...well, you could always play dumb at the dealer & try to get them to replace it for free. It's always possible your CD player died for an unrelated reason (unlikely, but not impossible). Anyway, I'm sorry dude. This obviously didn't turn out how we planned. Keep us updated & I'd like to help out if I can. (I'm feeling pretty guilty right about now) -
Well, I took out the board and put everything back together. When I turned on the key, the CD would accept a CD but it made a lot of noise. I tried it a couple of times and it made a screeching noise each time. After about 3 times, the CD player went dead and wouldn't eject the CD. It looks like I'll be going to the junkyard to find another.

Here's a photo of the radio with the cd player on top...I don't have a photo of only the radio. I'll try it one more time in the morning, but that will probably be it.

What's the radio portion look like? It's the same type of cable (14pin flat) ...damn...there's got to be a way... You've already tried most everything I can think of though. My only suggestion would have been to try the cable in the other direction...Are you sure you're keeping the orientation in the same direction as how the cd normally plugs into the radio? Have you plugged it back in w/o the board to verify everything's still copasetic?

Ok, I tried the ribbon both ways, with same result -- CD isn't powered. Here's a photo of the single CD unit. Any ideas?

Ok, I plugged the white harness into the head unit and turned the key. The radio get's power, but the CD player doesn't work. The drive won't pull a CD in. It does however flash "CD In" whenever I start to stick in a CD. Does anyone know why the CD wouldn't be powered?

I had to take off the side brackets and remove the HVAC unit from the bottom of the head unit to remove it.
I'm trying to take the head unit out of my 2005 2.5i Legacy Outback with single CD and manual HVAC controls. There's a blue cable running to the manual temperature control that I can't seem to remove from the head unit. Any ideas? -

Jazzy is sending me a board to test on my single CD hu. Hopefully it will come tommorrow and I'll get it installed in time for my weekend trip. If it does come tommorrow, I should have photos posted here either Thursday night or after the weekend. Thanks again -- I'm all ready to try the install.
For anyone dying to know (including me), I'm sending a board to someone with a 1CD headunit (2.5i) today to test it out & we'll have final word one way or the other Thursday (assuming USPS keeps up with their mail). I've just built up my parts stock again and should have assembled boards in stock for a good while longer.Hope everyone else's week is going well...mine's been busy as hell.

Jazzy,
I've been meaning to send the aux board you sent me back but just haven't gotten around to it. I'll try to send it to you tomorrow. I ended up getting the Metra kit and installed an Alpine headunit. You can check out a photo of it here: http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21160&page=2&pp=15
Thank,
Bryan
