Check if your wastegate moves freely, I had very similar symptoms minus the code when mine got stuck open
Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk
It sounds like it opens and closes, but I will check. How does one check btw?

Thank you Jveers. I have read that a clogged cat can cause the acceleration and power problems that I am experiencing so it makes sense. I'm going to have a buddy do a pressure test.
If it is the cat are there any after market ones that would be an OEM replacement?

Hello
My 2006 Legacy Gt will not rev past 4000 rpm it also has almost no power and very poor acceleration and is throwing the P2096 code. I had a VF-52 pun in a few weeks ago as well as tune the code came up before the tune. Could it be one of the O2 sensors or a clogged cat?
Wanted add that my gas consumption has gotten very high since the rev problem started.

Will be tuned next Saturday

Thanks guys. I will keep it out of boost and drive as little as possible, luckily work is only three miles away.

Any other mods?
No other mods

I purchased a vf52 to install in my 2006 Legacy GT pre-covid. The original turbo died recently so I has the vf52 out in today. Seeing how covid has cut my income in more than half (bartend) I really can't afford a tune, but don't want to destroy the engine either. Can I forgo the tune if I don't drive it aggressively?
Thanks

Have you started the car since the this issue ?
Have you done a oil change and checked the drain pan for metal ?
If you feel like its not to bad, you can drive the car next to a wall of a building with the windows down, you can hear a lot doing that.
Have you had that other turbo checked out to make sure its good ?
What are you plans for the car ?
Here's what the OEM DP looks like, these are from my cars.

Thank you for all the info and pictures!
I had not driven the car since last November and started driving it again in mid April. I had the oil changed at the dealer about a week after starting drive to drive it again so did not check the oil.
I checked the other turbo for play and it is good.
plans are just to do the new turbo and a tune. Installed JMD Bilsteins
shocks and springs as well as AVO +0.50 Caster Adjustment Control Arm Bushings.
Not really thinking of doing much more to it at the moment.

Its hard to advise you not to drop the DP without being there to hear the sound.
these vf40's are know to have shaft bearing issues. BUT normally you'll get the P0011/P0021 CEL. Like most of have over the 16 years I've been on here.
How many miles on the car ?
I don't recall getting either of those codes.
154,000 miles

I would do your best to keep it out of boost.
You need to pull the downpipe and check for shaft play if your pretty sure its the turbo.
I gather the car has a 5eat and not a 5mt transmission ?
You need to remove the down pipe in order to reach the turbo shaft. If you still have the have the stock DP on the car, it will be a PITA to remove. The first time.
I see where you live. ESP up in Sterling MA is a great place and knows these cars well.
My wagon was on there dyno and they did work on my car back in 2011.
We haven't asked you yet if this is the OEM turbo ?
Man that sucks!
Yes, stock turbo and down pipe

Do I have to remove the down pipe or can I just unbolt and move out of the way?

Can you have a friend drive the car down the road and you listen for it? These cars make all sorts of whining sounds, especially if you have harder bushings for the trans and diff. I get tons of gear whine if I go off-throttle in second.
That is a great idea!
-
I wander if I am noticing it because of driving with the windows down? I might as well do the swap since I have the other turbo.
-
So don't confuse the 5mt noise for the turbo.
These things are known to make transmission noise like a 1940's truck. Mine is loud, but again its a deeper whine, not high pitched
I'm pretty sure that this is not the transmission as it is very high pitched.
-
Hi Max its a 5MT
-
Oh wow, hope I can get ir home after work.
-
What Ibwas afraid of. I have another turbo that I was planning on putting in guess I have to do it sooner than I thought. How long do take to go once the whistle starts?
-
Sorry I cant' really hear it.
The Turbo will be more of a whistle sound. the 5mt's are know to be loud from gear whine.
The PS pump is more of a deeper whine.
I hear all three everyday. Well my turbo is more of its normal sound of spooling, like when your on the highway next to a semi at the bottom of a hill. As he rolls into the throttle, you'll hear his turbo spool.
It's definitely more of a whistling. I'll try to get a better recording to post

About a week ago I started noticing a high pitched whining/whistling/sucking noise coming from the engine. It only happens on acceleration while in gear so I am worried that it maybe the turbo. I have linked a video and the sound in question is right around the two second mark. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you're on the right track. It wouldn't be hard to make your own and give it a try. Have you tried checking the power wire at the starter with a test light? It should be very bright. If the ground is not clean, that can cause a similar problem. May be a dumb question, but did you connect the power wire to the correct terminal on the starter?
have not tried checking the power at the starter. I have a multimeter and can check it with that, what voltage am I looking for?
Also what fuse should I be looking at?
-
I finally had a chance to work on it again today. I connected a battery pack directly to the starter and it started right up. I then tried to jump it and again got the rapid clicking with no start. I am think that the issue maybe the cable to the starter, any thoughts?
-
If it's not below, its next to it. Its hooked to the Male spade on the starter.
I did reconnect that when I was instating the starter. I'm going to take it all apart to see if I missed anything once it stops raining.
-
Is the trigger wire on the starter tight? If you have a test light, have someone attempt to start the car while probing the trigger wire. You should have 12v all the time on the main power wire at the starter and power on the trigger wire while cranking.
Is the trigger wire the small wire at the back of the starter underneath the power line?
