  1. '09 2.5i (EJ253) SE 5MT (TY758). Whilst chasing a P0026 code yesterday, unaware those switches are only supposed to be threaded in a few turns, I split the fitting on the RH cylinder head. Now oil shoots everywhere.

I've dropped over $3000 on this vehicle in the last three months, $2400 of which has been for random issues in the past three weeks. I live in NoVA and don't have a place to work in it.

Currently it's sitting at a shop near Lynchburg VA to see what can be done. Advice welcomed.82a08ad4eaab453a2d81b739b04a9e56.jpg

  2. '09 Legacy 2.5i Special Edition EJ253 / TY758. For the last week or two I've been getting a noticeable whine that:

-does *not* vary w/ engine RPM

-does *not* vary with the clutch engaged / disengaged

    -does vary with wheel speed

A couple nights ago I put four jackstands under it, got it up to 3rd gear, jammed the accelerator w/ a two-by-four and crawled under it with a stethoscope:

-When sitting in the front I can hear the whirring

-Left-hand wheels I could *not* get to stay turning

-Right-hand wheels I could get to spin; aside from some spinning noise (*whoosh*) I didn't hear anything from the bearings

-At the front of the transmission / front diff / center diff assembly it was mostly spinning noise (*whoosh*) and a hint of a whirr

-At the rear of the transmission / front diff / center diff assembly and aft mount I could clearly hear whirring

I drained the old Redline 75W90NS fluid 9000 miles early (only 21000 miles on the fluid; was dark grey in the waste container) and filled it w/ fresh Mobil 1 75W90LS fluid.* That did a little to quiet the whirr, but I can still hear it.

What are your thoughts?* Center diff bearing?* Output shaft bearing?

If I'm missing a thread where this has already been covered, kindly reply with a link. Thanks in advance.

  3. In my '09 2.5i EJ253 (NA) SoA recommends dino 5W-30 SM.

I would run Rotella T6 but that isn't rated SM, SN or SN Plus (could damage the catalytic converter). Right now I'm running CARQUEST (Warren Distribution) Full Synthetic 5W-40 in it.

I refuse to run anything more than $5/qt as it's leaking profusely from the LH head at the oil control valve gasket. As it did well for a reasonably-priced oil in Project Farm's tests, once I'm out of the Warren stuff I'm going to try to unify the lubricant supplier across my vehicles and systems and go Valvoline MaxLife Full Synthetic 5W-30.

Unless you're an automotive engineer or engine builder, the starting point for any oil-related discussion is the manufacturer's recommendation. Keep the level topped off and change it regularly with an OEM or reputable aftermarket filter.

  4. I swapped my cloth seats in my 05 OBXT with some leather jobs I found in the scrap yard. One of the SRS plugs on the driver's seat list it's retaining clip when I took it apart so I tried zip tying it together. Buttoned everything up and the light stayed off so I figured it was an acceptable fix. Next day the light starts intermittently coming on but can be sometimes turned off with a power cycle. Now it just stays on all the time. I took the time to de-pin the the connector that was cut at the scrap yard and replace it with a good one. Now my airbag light stays on.

When I encountered this phenomenon with a driver seat side airbag module code I just cut out all of that connector business and just soldered the wires together. Problem hasn't returned since.

I'm not paying $1300 for a new interior wiring harness plus $130/hr labor to rebuild the interior.

  5. "While I don't doubt it's true, it's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard of in my life. Can these people think of no other option than to drain their oil every night? http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/images/smilies/lol.gif . Not the brightest bulbs out there, are they?"

Aircrew of DC-3 cargo aircraft will do this to their piston engines when they fly to northern Canada and let the aircraft sit overnight. I've never heard of someone doing that to a car, though...
