^ Thanks. What PSI are each of your tunes and is your engine stock headers and pistons?
My e85 tune had a peak of 23 PSI and my 91 octane tune peaked at 18.5 PSI. Everything from an engine standpoint was stock aside from the fuel system upgrades so I was likely pushing the limits of the stock head studs and thus the head gasket at those pressures. I never had an issue, but I also wasn't a very aggressive driver.

But.. If I get just an E85 tune and a separate 91 octane tune, what would happen? Do I need to let my car run to empty and refill with 91 if caught away from e85 with a quarter tank?
Trying to do my due diligence before I consider an e85 tune. Sounds like waiting for a flex fuel solution is best so far.
FWIW, I had separate tunes for 91 and e85. I switched back and forth a handful of times and never had an issue. When I went from 91 to e85, I would usually run rich for a short period until the fuel trims adjusted. Conversely, when I went from e85 to 91, I had a brief period where things were a little on the lean side but within perhaps 20-30 minutes of driving, the fuel trims adjusted again and compensated.
I normally drove the car with a lighter right foot for awhile after switching fuels until AFRs stabilized but it was never a big deal. I would say as a general rule it's wise to run out as much of the old fuel as you can, then when you do re-fuel and re-flash, just drive moderately until you see your fuel trim and AFRs back in line.

Brendan, I'm excited to see what you can come up with for this. You are more of a pioneer than I ever was for sure. That said, this has caused the smallest part of me (insert phallic joke here) to have slightly less regret on selling the car.
In all seriousness though, you seem to be taking an extremely intelligent and logical approach that should put you in a position of having a very robust drivetrain.

Ahhh, no real comparison. The LGT was on e85 and putting down some pretty severe power. However, the VW is quiet, extremely smooth, responsive, and still fun to drive. It definitely lacks the raw acceleration of the GT, but I have to say that it's a fun car and I enjoy the refinement and handling quite a lot.

Just wanted to jump on and say hello to all my 5th genners. I can't believe how much time has snuck past since I've been on here
In any case, I haven't got much to report. The car rolled past 89k about a week ago and is still running flawlessly. I will probably be putting my winter setup on this coming weekend but beyond that, there are no other plans for upgrades and (thankfully) no mysterious issues that will consume my time and liquid cash supply.

My IWG is ported also on my uninstalled turbo - a bit more aggressively than the above - I'll try and take some pictures of it this weekend.

I have to say that I feel for everyone here. If I hadn't gone down the EWG route, I think I'd be in the same boat so while I'm not feeling your direct frustrations, believe me I can relate and I hope you can get some resolution quickly.

jackal8788 - Wow what an experience!! I have to confess, I skipped to the end and looked over your dyno comparison chart. It looks like you found that the 18g works best on our cars due to the wimpy exhaust cams and the restrictive size of the VF54 housing.
Any chance you would be willing to put together a brief summary of your experience, what specific turbo you used, where you sourced it, and the supporting mods required for success?
Yeah, it's been a wild ride
I'm very happy with the car now and it really makes my daily drive satisfying and fun so I'm not complaining.
In my build thread, I do have as my very first post, a current and updated list of all the mods to date. I actually picked my turbo up from fahr_side (who, if you read my thread, is a tuning sage and eminent source of wisdom in our happy fifth gen family). BNR also offers a billet 18G option with a modified VF54 housing.
If you have more specific questions though, shoot me a PM and I'll be glad to share my opinions/experiences.

I make a bet with myself everytime someone installs their first EWG, on how long it will be before they have the dump welded back into the downpipe or ditch the whole thing. I think the average is about 3 weeks. Slightly longer if single, can be much less if married!
Do I get extra credit for holding out this long as a married man?

Whelp, took me a week or two, reading a few pages a day here and there, but I finished the novel!
Great info in here, sad it had to be at an expense but I suppose it has to happen to at least one person. Definitely has helped me in deciding what I need to do to get my car where I want it. And the gist conclusion, as I understood, was that in order for the 20g to be effective, cams & springs should be swapped, otherwise just go 18g....
Also, who else makes an exhaust manifold with EWG option?
Any thoughts on changing to FMIC, or is it really necessary/beneficial?

As for the EWG header, ETS makes (or made - I don't know if they even offer it any longer) a header that is basically the stock design but with 2 wastegates on it, one tied to each set of runners. ebo3 is running this. It's a very nice design but it doesn't (or didn't) come cheap.
acumenhokie has a custom piece that was a one-off.
M1cha3l, SomeZero, and myself are all running the Six Star header (at least SomeZero was at one point). AFAIK, they are the only other shop that offers this so doing something custom is probably your other option. If you do want to consider Six Star, shoot me a PM.
Not sure if there are any others on here I've missed but the number of 5th gens with EWG are very, very low and options are very, very limited.

After lots of searching through various threads i havent been able to find many options for turbo upgrades on 5th gen Legacy GT's.
Those of you that know , please post hear. Maybe we can formalize a list and get it stickied.
Read my build thread and you can get a good sense of what the options are like and what else is needed to make them work properly
FYI, you'll probably want to have a six-pack handy...

Yeah, I know that's an option too. I guess I'm not quite at the point of hating the noise. It is still fun but starting to wear thin. For me, I'd like to just tame it a little bit so it isn't quite so brash.

MBC makes the wastegate opening muuuuch more predictable.
Yeah, I had debated about putting one in the circuit quite awhile ago. I actually bought a nice Hallman unit but ended up selling it during one of my many directional changes. I might consider throwing one in there...

That didn't take long... I don't have any experince with EWG's so pardon my ignorance. I always thought it only opened up when you got on it. It also flutters during light, regular around the block driving? Any thoughts of trying the hybrid setup?
No, you're right. It's normally closed and doesn't really make any noise until I'm at ~14 PSI. I haven't had any flutter with my setup - it is very distinctly either open or closed! I don't go WOT very often at all, but it opens enough during spirited driving that it's getting to be a minor nuisance. For example, I wanted to pass a few slower-moving cars the other day so I gave it a little throttle and I just felt a little bit foolish when I zipped past them with the WG blasting away. If it only opened at or very near WOT, it might be okay but I want to be able to mellow it out a bit for 'spirited' maneuvers so I don't look like a total D-bag.
I suppose I could also go with a stiffer spring to keep it shut until it gets closer to 18 or 19 PSI but I'm not sure that is a wise idea when my peak boost is only 22.5 PSI.

- EWG is LOUD!! Holy F! However, it's also still at the point of being fun and amusing rather than obnoxious (at least to me. Claim doesn't apply to other motorists, bystanders, passengers, etc.). Don't know how long that will last, but it's a blast right now.....
Well friends, nothing really new to report (much to my great satisfaction
) buuuuut I may be entering territory where I now wish the EWG dump noise is, if not completely lost, at least muted or tamed a little bit. While I know welding a dump tube back to the downpipe would not be overly difficult for a decent fabricator, I don't know if I want to go this route yet because I still do like hearing it.
Instead I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck muffling the dump side? I've come across a few posts on other forums where people have used various things including lawnmower mufflers so I'm just looking to get some thoughts on something I might be able to try that would just bolt right up to the WG outlet.
