Nope. Car is dark. The hatch light comes on when I open the hatch. That's it.
I asked the repair shop to have a look. They saw the mod and said, "sorry."
-
Thanks. Yes, both map lights and the backseat dome come on when manually turning them on. I also replaced the stock bulbs with LED. I checked and rechecked the connection.
-
I did this a long time ago and it worked great for a few years. Then the lights wouldn't come on at all when opening the door. I can turn them on manually, so they work. Any ideas why they stopped working when the doors open?

Not nearly as active as I was in 2005. Came across the site after buying my car in June. Still driving it daily at over 228K miles.

So you still have to take the whole dash out to do the driver's side?
-
Thanks so much for verifying. I saw post on the other forum but saw that it was an 05 Outback with the 3.0 six. I fell much better now. The local dealer said he can have a 72131AG27A in a day.

I need a driver's side HVAC blend door actuator (Part # 72131AG12A), but it is discontinued.
Weird, because the two other OEM components on the passenger side are still showing available.
It looks like I'll have to scour the salvage yards but are there any other sources for hard-to-get parts? Can this part be fixed?
-
Search isn't working for me. Can anyone help with removing the driver's side console trim (by your right knee)? It looks like I need to remove three screws. After removing the center console ahead of the shifter, I see one screw, but how do I get to the others.
I'm trying to get to the blend door actuator on the driver's side. I already did the passenger side. PITA, by the way.
Thanks.

Alright then. How about the HVAC blend door actuator? Since the weather turned colder, I noticed that I'm not getting significant heat in the cabin. This past weekend, I had a new radiator installed and asked the shop to look at the thermostat. The tech said I needed a new blend door actuator. I found a great Youtube video on changing the actuator out, and another with the noise a bad one makes. The noise in my dash sure sounds like it. The part is cheap. I hope to replace it myself as I'm getting quotes of $600 and more.

So the buzzing happens after you start not, not before like in this video?
Yes, the buzzing happens after the engine starts. My car wouldn't start this morning and it just needed a new starter. Would the starter switch buzz?
-
OK, car wouldn't start today. Could that buzzing noise have been the ignition switch?
-
Does it sound like a drip coffee pot percolating? If so then it is the A/C actuators.
Only other common dash related noise is the locating clips for the dash against the firewall but those rattle and would be all the time.
It's a low hum/buzz that lasts about five seconds every time I start the car. It sounds like it's coming from behind the dash, between the instrument cluster and the head unit.

Yes, auto A/C. Ltd. wagon.

2005 Legacy N/A with a little over 200K mils.
In the last week, I've noticed a humming sound from around the dash immediately after I start the car. It goes away in a few seconds. I don't know if it's a relay or something.
Typically, I drive to work, leave it parked all day and when I leave at night, the same hum occurs at start up for a few seconds.
Any ideas?

Mine are due today. Can't believe avoJDM wanted over $200 for shipping. Almost bought a used pair from Japan on Ebay but quickly canceled the order when I went back to PartSouq and saw they were in stock for less money.

Some time in '05, I think. My car is 10 years old this month.

Does the oe dome light still come on? Do the maps work normally?Seems like your jumper wire from dome to map fixture has come loose. Did you use butt connectors or something? Bad solder joint? How did you get the Dome Ground lead over there?
I check the jumper as well and all the solder joints are intact. I just snaked lead through the headliner.

Does the oe dome light still come on? Do the maps work normally?
Yes, the dome light comes on when you unlock and open the car, and the map lights click on and off manually. I've done nothing to the car and can't figure out why the maps don't come on with the dome.

I did this hack years ago and it's worked flawlessly until recently. The map lights work when you press the button, but they don't come on with the dome light like they used to. I check all the fuses and connections. Any ideas?

Are your connections to the map light assembly soldered? just go through the entire wiring and check every connection. If you didn't solder every connection there's a chance that it isn't there anymore.
Not every connection. Just the diodes. I may do a little soldering, then.
-
All right. I swapped out the crimp connector that joins the wire between the diodes and dome light. I open the door and - Tadah! - the map lights shined bright. So I'm thinking "success" and put the map light assembly back in place, open the door, and nothing. The map lights work when you push their buttons. This morning, one of the map lights came on faintly when I opened the door. I'm scratching my head on this one.
-
They're likely not in backwards then. I'm leaning towards a bad connection somewhere in your wiring. backwards would be taking them out and then flipping them around so that the sides that are contacting left and right are now contacting right and left respectively. make sense?
Makes sense. Thanks. I'll take a look at the crimp connectors.

Thanks. I'll check for the dome for power and try new diodes. At this point of ownership, I'm not thrilled about taking out the BIU and doctoring the board.
