  1. It may have been said already but I just wondered how people have managed to charge while using OTG cables? I'm hoping to finish my install next weekend and the only thing stopping me is this 1 problem.

I had a lot of problems with this.. months of research..tried lots of cables etc.

Send an email to: andyzhengster {AT} g{}m[]ail{dot}com

and say you want to buy an OTG Y Cable.

Cost about $15-20 (Deppending on shippment option), but well worth the money.

After that, you need a new kernerl for your Nexus. You can Try T1mur (cost €30 or so?), or Elemental X (Search for it on xda-developers (free), forum).

  2. I've had my Nexus 7 in the car for about 2 years now. Here are some things to note:

    Backup Camera

Finally got a working solution. Got a Wifi backup camera off of Amazon (available on eBay too). It creates it's own Wifi hotspot, which you connect to on the Nexus 7 and then using an app from the Google Play store you can view the video feed over the wifi connection.

    AutomateIt Integration

Both my phone (Note 3) and Nexus 7 have AutomateIt installed. It works the same as Tasker, I just find the interface easier to use. With AutomateIt, I have the rules set around the power status of the Nexus 7.

When the Nexus 7 receives power (ie: car turns on):

    - Turn on the tablet screen

    - Turn on wifi and bluetooth

    - Start Car Home Ultra (my car dock app)

When my car starts up, I also have a bluetooth device in the car that will power up only when the car is on. Doing this, allows my phone to pair with the bluetooth for handsfree calling, but also, using AutomateIt, when it pairs with the bluetooth my WifiHotspot from my phone turns on, connecting my Nexus 7 to an internet connection.

When the car turns off, AutomateIt:

    - Automatically closes Car Home Ultra, and Waze (if it was open)

    - Automatically turns off my phone's WifiHotspot

    - Automatically turns off wifi, bluetooth, and my Nexus 7's screen

    - If music was playing, it stops that as well.

With everything working like this, I don't ever have to touch any buttons, turn anything on, or fiddle with any settings when turning on and off the car. When the car is off, the Nexus 7 is on battery power, and lasts well over 2 weeks because it is not running any apps, the screen is off, and all connections are turned off. Even when it does dip a little low on battery power, it typically charges at about 1% a minute so just a short drive can often get it topped up.

    Cool.

I recommend the dashcam "Blackvue DR550" or "Blackvue DR650" instead. It's dashcam that reecords everything (It has a front and rear camera), and also has a wifi hot spot so you can see the recorded clip and live feed.

    It's good for security :)

Have you tried to hook up the steering wheel to the tablet? I have and its recommended! Also connected a USB hub and a FM Radio to it, which works really good. I don't have a Subaru though, but a Suzuki Grand Vitara.

    Nice work anyway.

  3. Thanks!! I had the new one as my personal tablet and got a cheap original modem off Craigslist for the install. When I started setting the old one up, I found it to be very slow compared to the new one. The screen resolution of the new one was also much better, so I decided to use the new one instead since I really didn't use it much.

There are two downsides to the new one:

    - The USB port cannot be relocated as easily as the older model, so I have the cable sticking out on the side (which makes the passenger vent non-functional)

    - The screen is polarized and is pretty much impossible to see with my polarized sunglasses. I don't think the older model was that bad.

Other than that, Timur has a kernel for it so I have the same deep sleep and USB DAC functionality. I love it.

Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

Try different sunglasses.. it kind of deppends on your sunglasses to and on which way they are polarized (vertically or horizontal).

How much is it sticking out? You can modify the micro cable and make it a lil shorter.

This is what i came up with:

  4. I've had my 2013 Nexus 7 installed for about a month now, and things are going great. The only issue I keep having is that the sun hits the tablet VERY hard during the day, and I find that the tablet has shut down due to overheat protection very often.

Anyone else experience this? How do you get around it? My options as far as I can tell are to use one of those windshield shades or always park in the shade.

I wonder if a screen protector will reflect some of that heat away.

Can't remember having any heat issues on my tablet in my car..but i dont have the same car as you guys have, so the position is probably a lil different.

Have you tried FM radio on your Nexus 7? (Not internet radio).

  5. I think I'll probably go that route. Looks great and pretty simple set up.

Yes, it's very easy to set up.

Only bad thing with this is that the camera itself generates a wifi network. So you can't connect your tablet to your phones wifi while using this.

I'm trying to teach myself Tasker a lil better, and hopefully i can make it connect to my phone \ camera with a gesture \ shortcut. I'll see what i can do.

Also planning to change out my Galaxy Tab 2 with Nexus 7 (v2), since it got OTG. Just not sure if that will work the way i want yet..

  6. are you using composite video cams or usb ones ?

If you asked me i use WiFi cameras. Blackvue DR550GW 2CH.

Front camera captures FullHD 30fps and rear camera HD 30fps.

6-7 hours of capture on the SD card. Can also live view, and watch recorded videos through wifi on my tablet.

  7. Hey all. new to the forum. :-)

Very nice tablet install you guys have.

In January~ this year, i did a similar install in my Suzuki Grand Vitara 2006 and very happy with it. Just recently upgraded it to CyanogenMod 10.2.

    I'm using the Galaxy Tab 2 7".

Also got it hooked up to both my dashcams (dash + rear)
