I experimented with the HU some more, looking to see if it had a key to turn off the guide lines. No luck so far.

 

I did remember that you can select the language (English/French/Spanish) in normal operation mode. While viewing the rear camera image (car in reverse), press the SCROLL/TUNE knob to adjust brightness, press again to adjust contrast, and again to select language. Still no key there to turn off the lines.

 

I just noticed that on the Camera System screen, the first line actually says use 1/2 to "select range marking type" (not angle). I'm guessing that was a late change, and originally those keys did select among different styles of lines (as some other Subaru HUs do). Could people with the other models (PE658U1, PE669U1, etc.) check theirs to see if that menu is different?

I just checked my PE658U1 and I was able to get into Diagnostics just fine. Thank you for the instructions. My menu options are the same as posted above. Do you happen to have a price on the jumper wire with pins and video cable with pins that you made for jojorios? Also, how are people powering their cameras? Just tapping into the backup lights or is there pins to tap into at the receiver that can be added to the harness you make? Thanks again for all the work you put into this SVXdc.

Where did you find information on the trunk lid harness? All of the parts sites don't seem to list the harnesses for current model cars.

 

I called my local parts dept and gave them the VIN number of a Legacy with a backup camera. I also gave them the VIN number of my Legacy which does not have a backup camera and the part numbers were different. The harness for the camera of course costs about $20 more. If you google the part number I provided you can find websites that sell it much cheaper then the dealer.

I just pulled the head unit out of my 2013 Legacy Limited and found out that I am missing the four camera wires on pins 11,12,13 & 14. I do however have the four camera wires on the car side of the trunk plug, I am just missing the four camera wires on the trunk lid harness. It is kind of odd that they ran the four camera wires through the car but did not hook them up to the 28 pin harness. That makes it so this is not quite so plug and play.

FYI,

I am looking to the do same thing with a 2013 Limited with a sunroof with a PE658U1. From my research so far, you need to replace the trunk harness with part# 81811AJ05A and get the factory backup camera part # 86267AJ11A. Both parts can be found for half the price online than at the dealer. I also verified after looking at wiring diagrams and at the plug where the trunk harness needs to be replaced that the four camera wires are at the car side of the plug and the non camera harness is missing the four wires. The four wires on the car side are the correct color and in the correct pin locations per the wiring diagram for the camera. The harness plug is visible when you open the trunk look inside of it on the right wall up high. You should see a tag around the trunk side of the harness that says #81811AJ00A and that is the NON CAMERA trunk harness. It appears to be a plug and play addition. It sounds like all you would have to do is run the ground jumper to enable the backup camera at the HU and then get the OEM camera harness and OEM camera and this would be a factory install. It would cost a few more dollars but would be a nice, clean install.

jpotts, do you have a link to the camera you used? Also, where did you get pins to use in the factory harness plug? Do you have any pictures of the install or the final installation. Thanks for any additional info you can provide.

USDM 2013 PE658U1 and 2014 PE669U1 are confirmed to have the rear camera feature, as well as the 2013 EDM PE438L1. Now that I've put all of the pieces together on those models, I think it's worth rechecking the USDM 2012 PE627U1 -- that one might wind up having the camera feature after all.

 

 

Digging up an old thread. I thought I would get everyone up to speed on my Rear Camera install. I purchased a Rydeen Miny Camera and a PE658U1. I made a harness for the power wires and rca connector using the factory pins. I installed the factory style pins into the factory connector 8,11-14. Ran the wire to the passenger side and through the floor to the back. I ran it through the trunk grommet and into the trunk. I cutout the plastic where the factory camera goes with a dremel tool. I mounted the camera at the factory location and fired it up. Everything works perfectly!

 

I THEN Hooked up my PE627U1 Stereo for giggles to see if that would work. I can 100% confirm that IT DOES in fact work with the camera. Looks great and only took me about 2 hours from start to finish. What an easy install. I am a little bummed that I bought the PE658 because I really dont need it.

 

If anyone has a stock stereo and wants to upgrade to a 4.3" with camera capabilities, I have one for sale. I will try to do an informal writeup in the next few days with some pictures.

 

P.S. The camera cost me $40.00 on Ebay new, anyone with a 4.3" without a camera can do this mod for no more than $50, and make it well worth it.
