Trying a new oil (to me) 0w40 castrol edge European formula. I have been going through oil during break in with conventional oil. So it will be interesting to see how this oil reacts. I may have a slight leak from one of the cam seals so this may not reduce the vanishing oil. We shall see.

It depends on average temperature and driving style. The 5w40 for example is a thicker oil for people that are using a more severe driving style. 0w30 would be ideal in the dead of winter 0° or 20 below. But if your not sure then 5w30 winter and 10w30 summer. Read your owners manual for more specific oil viscosity guides. Most ej series motors could run straight 40 or 20w50 it just depends if you were in the desert or frozen tundra.

When pressure increases you do not want it to be unfiltered. Cold starts and high rpms. Ect. So yes, higher bypass pressure.

There have been blackstone labs shared in this thread, do the reading. Also understand that subaru does not recommend the use of synthetic oil in their engines until the 2012-2015 years. Some bad reviews of mobile one.

 

The weight of the oil has to do with thd climate you are in and the abuse you are putting your car through. Refer to your owners manual, thickest recommended is 20w50

The part i was interested in was where the the oil performed without the additives. He mentioned in there that hia suggestion would be for someone to use one of the higher ranked oils minus the additives.

Its odd, but when i worked at a very reputable repair shop they only used castrol gtx. Always wondered why, he must have known something that i did not.

This thread is phenomenal . lots of info but each owner should navigate it before servicing their car

After reading everything I think I am going to stick with castrol 5w30 in winter and 10w40 in summer. The GTX conventional oil seems great and I always change my oil under 3000 miles.

I just switched to castrol conventional 10w40 and going 5w40 in about 2 months. Using WIX 57712's. My car is protuned w/VF52. I know the extended benefits of synthetic, however I change my oil any where from 2000 to 3000 miles, never over. Castrol is a personal favorite of mine, hopefully the subaru enjoys it as well.
