The shop is Southside Transmission in Fort Smith AR
$1800 may be a good price for a rebuild, but it's still $1800. I'd like to see what the dealer says.
-
Took mine to a local transmission shop; he drove it for about five minutes, looked at the dip stick and told me it would be a $1800 rebuild. Needless to say I'm getting a second opinion, but the Subie dealer here can't get me in till next week.

2.5i's come with 4EAT. you should probably investigate how to perform a relearn procedure for your tranny.
ah, right you are. 4EAT
Would the unlearning stop it from going into drive?
-
Just bought an 05 2.5i with 84,000 miles and a 5EAT about 3 months ago. A month ago it starts with the slipping described in this thread. I checked the fluid and it's super high, like twice the amount needed. I drained it off and the problem compounded, now when it's cold it won't go into D at all. It'll drop into R, but not D until it's warmed up. It takes about 10 min or so and then it'll drop in. Once on the road it shifts like a brick for the first 15 min or so, then it's fine.
I'm changing the fluid and filter today (who knows when the last time it was done)
any suggestions?

Did this yesterday and am so happy I can run Xenons now!
As a couple of people stated, not sure what the brown wire runs to but I only cut the blue w/black stripe wire and it worked. The DRL light on the dash no longer comes on and the DRLs don't come on when the ebrake is released. No error lights and everything else still functions properly. Thanks for figuring this out guys
What did i miss here? Why are you cutting wires? and how did you get that stupid drl symbol to go away?

Installed the (Whispbars *always said in a whisper*) yesterday and really like the look of them. Take it for a drive and they howl like banshees. Sounds like the Andleberry Estate is strapped to the roof of my car.
After a two hour trip today with the radio 'turned up to 11' I visited Whispbar's website to figure out what's up. They do not have a troubleshooting section, but do have the manual online. Despite thinking it a waste of time I reread the manual. Step 1 of the installation is to ensure the Whispbar is facing the correct direction. With the thick bit facing forward. And problem solved.
Now properly installed they are indeed Whispbars. Well worth the extra money over another rack system.

Awesome write-up. Saved me at least $60.
Once i got mine open grease was not the culprit, rather corrosion was gumming it up. Once cleaned up and re-installed it works like a charm.

ordered mine off the rack warehouse. 10% off and free shipping. checked orsracksdirect and it was about the same price. with the second discount it would be a little less.
Yakima has a retailer here in town, it was about $50 more from them. would have been worth it to buy from the local guy, but he didn't have it in stock. Figured if i'm going to wait on delivery may as well save a couple bucks.
Will post pics when i get the thing mounted. the ones on here were very helpful to me.

Ordered today, i'm looking forward to load testing them on the highway. 160 lbs is not that much, that's not even enough for one mafia informant's corpse on top of your car at a time.
On the other hand isn't the roof designed to be able to hold the weight of the car in a roll-over. So i should be able to stack 3,000 lbs of farm-fresh Wisconsin gouda on top of Lucille (my car's name) and be awesome.
Full disclosure; it's late and i've been drinking. let's revisit this subject in the morning.

I like the idea and look of the Wispbar. website says the weight limit is 165 lbs, if i throw a kayak or two up there and strap it down, i'm wondering if it'll be alright. Anyone tested these things out?

Thanks, good to know.
After posting this I went and checked that my parking lights weren't on. They were not. But the symbol doesn't come on with the parking lights. Seems a little redundant to have a symbol in the dash telling you your headlights are on. People complain that they don't like the DRL because they tend to drive at night with them on - so it would seem that the DRL symbol should only show when the DRL are on and not when the HL are on.
It's an awesome car I got for a steal, I can live with the weird light. HID fog lights next.

Put the HID lights in my recently purchased 05 and disabled the DRL thanks to this thread.
It did this before this mod, but wondering if it's normal for the DRL symbol in the instrument panel to stay on. Even when the head lights are on the green DRL symbol is on. It's irritating, especially at night. Is this normal? any way to disable it?
