  1. Well mary is whooping my ass. And there is no end in sight to this ass whooping, there are so many legacies making big numbers now. That being said since my last post I have installed a new way bigger radiator, got the fueling system sorted out. And at this moment I am getting a rotated setup fabricated for my new turbo. I will be adding new fueling system components with the new turbo after some time to re coupe my savings. The fuel systems that is going in it will be the one I will use for the new engine when ever I get around to that (hopefully later this year or possibly next year. So here are the details on the new parts, I have a Borg Warner s300sx e 75lb per min turbo 62mm compressor wheel; mishimoto aluminum radiator, omni 4 bar map sensor, and a tial 38mm Mvs waste gate, new intercooler pipes are being fabricated as well as my tomei up pipe is being turned into a rotated up pipe. Fuel system parts have not been purchased yet but it will be along the lines of a high flow 400ish lph pump in tank feeding a surge tank feeding a magafuel 750 to -8 feed lines to my already installed aeromotive rails then to my adjustable fpr returning to the surge tank via -6 line which will over flow back into the factory tank. I will post picture as I go

Someone listened to me about the fuel system :)

  2. Let me get this right before I start ordering parts.

This is what I think I need for a 5EAT to 6 speed swap.

    • 2004 STI 6 speed
    • 2004 R180
    • Rear 2007 spec B axles
    • 2007 spec b drive shaft
    • 6MT shift linkage
    • 6MT shifter
    • 6MT shift knob
    • 6MT slave cylinder
    • 6MT clutch fork
    • 2006 LGT 5MT peddle assembly
    • Manual ecu

Is there anything I am missing?

clutch and flywheel. you'll also need the clutch master cylinder since you are going from 5eat to 6MT

i do not believe you have to change the ECU.. flash a manual rom onto it.

  3. for anyone doing an EARLY 04 sti trans, (stubbed axles). mine has always leaked, after further research, not only do you have to remove the stubs, you also have to replace the "sundial" or differential retainer on the sides of the transmission for our male style axles to fit properly.

Sundials (retainer differential) 38342AA161 (2) dealer claims same l/r

O-rings 806900150 (2) may not be required but ordered to determine.

Numbers above for a 2005 STi. Local dealer claims sundial part numbers are the same for '02 through '07 model years.

Having the above part numbers should allow a "pinned" '04 US STi to be converted to non-"pinned" and direct fit a STI or LGT front axle. The stub shafts will require removal from the "pinned" transmission's differential. Be sure to review the appropriate Service Manual for installation and adjustment procedures.

  4. Also, a little bit of information for those that get an STi shift linkage. You can buy a 07+ Spec B stay rod and shifter rod so that it puts the shifter in the center of the console opening. You will reuse the STi shift lever and reverse lockout cable as well as the rubber boot thing on the bottom. If you plan on upgrading to an aftermarket shifter and are using the STi shift linkage, only 04-07 STi lever will work as after having a discussion and sending pictures to Tom @ Kartboy, he said that only the 04-07 STi shift lever will work with the STi linkage setup.

Part #'s for those that have STi shift linkages and want to center their shifters without cutting/welding/spacing:

    Spec B Shifter Rod: 35041AG020

    Spec B Shifter Stay: 35031AG020

that's cheaper than having the sti ones extended by a shop.

im ordering them monday :) always bothered me after my swap that my shifter wasnt centered.

heres the parts from myimportparts.com (chandler subaru superstore in chandler, AZ)

Part Number: 35041AG020 ROD CP GEAR SHIFT $20.37

Part Number: 35031AG020 STAY CP GEAR SHIFT $33.38

  5. if i had the extra scratch, id buy an 08 hub and try it, but all im after is an easier way to get my r180 in the rear, and iv'e decided to just get the damn spec b axles.

i think even if you have to have the rear spindle machined out to accept the hub, it would be worth it, but in order to even take advantage you'd have to have the R180 out back.. so this could be feasable for spec b guys, and sti 6-speed swapped guys.

i have a sneaking suspiscion that the hub may just bolt in. if i can get my dealer to bring one in for me to test with, i'll try it..

  6. i dont want to convert to 5x114.3 per se', but i would love to have an R180 size rear bearing/hub so i can just use STI axels for my R180, not the crazy expensive (read: over $300 per) Spec B rear axels.

im going to order the spec b ones, but i do have some time, if there's ideas to be had.

  7. ^^ Maybe you just suck at tranny swaps.. or driving.

There are PLENTY of WRX STi's out there making way more than 400whp and not chewing up rear diffs.

And how do you know the stock 5MT won't handle 550whp? i only know of a handful 5MT's that have granaded and over half of those cases were drivers doing stupid human tricks.

You know, i have one of the most modified legacies in the country, and i dont post that much because of asswipe comments like that.....

"There are PLENTY of WRX STi's out there making way more than 400whp and not chewing up rear diffs." <---- that is because they are using the R180 rear diff! , and that is what i suggested the poster use.

i know for a fact that factory 5-speed will not handle that power, because mine didn't. and i know how to drive just fine. My car had never been slammed into gear, or abused.. clutch all the way out before mashing on it.

I'm going to guess, you have never broken anydrivetrain component on your car due to power? why don't you let the people that have accually had experience with these transmissions say thier piece!

  8. Yes and no.. my car has so many mods the hours it would take to transfer to another car would be insane. Even then how would a stock 5MT or Spec B handle 550whp?

the stock 5SP, will NOT handle 550whp. the SpecB / Sti 6-SP, however should.

you have 2 choices for that power level:

    1. Swap to a 6-speed, AND R180 rear diff. However i would be suspect of the subaru R160 -> R180 SpecB Axels at those power levels. (i'd reccommend a STI 6SP, since you get a Front LSD)

    2. Build your 5-SP with PPG gears.

FYI, i am on an STI 6-SP, with R160 Rear Diff, and i have just replaced the Rear diff for the 3rd time due to the sheer power my car makes.. over 400whp.

  9. There are basically 2 main options for turning your 5MT into a 6MT.

    Option #1:

    Transmission Choice: 2007+ LGT Spec B 6MT, 2004, 2005 STI 6MT

Rear Differential Choice: 2007+ LGT Spec B R180, 2004+ STI R180, <2004 Legacy or you can use a regeared stock R160 as well with stock LGT rear axles

Axles: Front - Stock LGT, Rear - 2007+ Spec B or custom Driveshaft Shop Axles

    Option #2:

    Transmission Choice: 2006+ STI 6MT

Rear Differential Choice: Stock LGT R160

Axles: Front - Stock LGT, Rear - Stock LGT

Etc: DCCD Controller for STI 6MT, 2005+ 2.5i LGT Auto Driveshaft (for Sedan or Wagon based on what you have currently) or 2007+ Spec B Driveshaft, appropriate 6MT flywheel and clutch, 2005 STI front axle seals (recommended), 6MT shift linkage, 6MT shifter, 6MT shift knob (as a note, most donor sets more than likely won't have a knob as most have been robbed from the junkyards ), 6MT slave cylinder, 6MT clutch fork

Quick Pros and Cons to the different components:

<2004 Legacy Differential is not going to be a viscous limited slip (CON)

2007 Spec B 6MT does not contain a limited slip front differential (CON)

2006+ STI 6MT has a 1:1 stepper center differential which allows you to use your stock R160 (PRO - Cheaper CON - weaker rear diff if using the R160)

    Groff, very nice..

FYI to everyone else, all this information was gathered by HAMMER DOWN, myself and groff, during our swaps.. this is real-world info, not speculation.

    for the rear diff:

hammer down is running a re-geared WRX unit

i am running a 2004 legacy auto 3.90 (just broke it :spin:), so i am swapping the 05 LGT LSD carrier into the 3.90 legacy housing

and groff is running an R180 and Spec.B Axels. (damn you!)

  10. Yes, that's opt.#1. It will put the shifter forward in the hole. My acc [ash-tray] door is open all the time, because of my radar detector. I did opt.#2 because the shifter will hit the ACC door shifting to 3rd.

    Mike

i used the stock 2004 sti 6-sp linkage. it does not hit the acc door when shifting at all, it ends up about 1/2" away in 3rd or 5th.
