Well the noise difference is because they are not the same turbo.
We pulled of a TD04 and I put on a VF40. Which apparently has a bit more flow and slightly slower spool.
Since the turbo was replaced prior to 59K this is probably why I had a rebuild in my future.

I've logged and I'm getting my 16.5 manifold actual pressure so I'm not leaning towards a leak.
It might be different blade designs. The entire core was rebuilt so maybe it has a different sound profile. The OEM has more of a rattle, this doesn't but has a whine/whistle.
Just wondering if it was cause for concern.

Could be your just being parenoid.... I know mine seems a bit louder recently...when it spools.
But I have the windows down now that it's nice out.
You might be right. It just doesn't sound like the one pulled off. There is definitely a louder noise. My wife, shop and I noticed it. A whine or whistle while approaching and holding peak boost. Wind and road noise make it hard to record.
Just concerned I blow this turbo, take out my motor and go insane in the process. This car is so temperamental.

correct, a rebuild. The shaft play was minimal, there has to be some or it seizes. Shop inspected it and said it was good.
-
My wife describes it as a whistle.
Maybe better audio here. It's hard to catch with the iphone it seems.

Hi guys, just had a rebuilt turbo installed and there is a whine while under boost.
Attempted to shoot this video. I've got a 1 year warranty on this turbo. Shop didn't seem overly concerned and called it compressor whine. Stage 2 16.5 target boost.

Notice it twice when I get on and off the gas.

How long are auto trannys lasting?
-
You need one curved for the car.
-
perfect! How much did you pay for it? and is that a thule ski rack on there?
Yup it's all thule. Setup was a PITA but it goes on and off easily. I want to say list is around $800 and I got my setup for about $190 at an REI garage sale.

All ready for the Mountain
This is what I have!

well I've got a low idle and a little stumble between 2-3k out of boost so I'm running the b12. Put a full can in just over half a tank. Might be a little techron additive in there but figure it wouldn't hurt. Lady and I are hitting the road tonight for a little trip and I should burn it all this weekend.

The cabin is developing some rattles that drive me nuts. There is also a slight clunk over the right bumps. Everything suspension wise is tight though.

Chevron sells a fuel system clear or there is the redline product. Both are the two best cleaners on the market.
I throw one in with every oil change. After 130K on the lady's beater I dropped in the redline. She asked me what I did to the car. It was running so smoothly.

This is a good thing, since you have a more controlled temperature.
The tranny is connected to the rad to bring it UP to temp faster.

Very quick. I like your power and tq curve

Looking forward to getting home from work today... there's rumor of a new grill sitting on my doorstep
Lucky dog!

Sweet! I will wait

Be careful, this is frank_ster your talking about. He's close to god like status...LOL
Hey, Frank, I wonder your car could finally be revolting because of that buick engine in there...
Read this, pooped my pants and ran to check my car to make sure it wasn't on fire because of this motor!!

Misused of beware...

Oh it's unfinished, the whole thing will be painted black when it's done. That's the last step though. The final paint will look like it does in the original recessed grill I made.
It'll also have a lip that goes across the bottom and up the sides to match the look of the S402 version a bit more and it also covers the transition of the honeycomb to the grill for a smoother look.
This might be the sexiest one you've made....
-
Here are another couple shots on the car. This is without the lip that will be there. It really looks a lot better in person, tough to see a good view by taking a picture but I figured it was better than nothing.
I really like this look. Is it possible to get the trim in black so it's black on black?

Thank you.
Pulled back fender liner to get better access and plumped in pre-rad for freezing temps we get here.

Me too! I'm remaining patient and know he's making the right choices for quality, and he's a stickler for details like me, which bodes well for the outcome!
Me 3!

That sounds good and I can do that no problem, there will be a wait though. There is quite the list going at this point and it's only fair to make them in order.
I'll add you and get in contact as soon as possible. Feel free to contact me for an update on when I'll make it to yours.
Sounds good. In no rush
