    Hello all,

Please help with connection aftermarket camera to OEM nav, wanted to to ground pin 8 from 28 pin harness, but looks like im missing some pins. Any ideas ho to connect? Few photos of my nav.
    ...

The information in this thread is strictly for the OEM Panasonic PExxx models (non navigation with the 4.3" video screen).

Your OEM navigation HU is made by Fujitsu Ten. Its rear camera input is via the 16-pin socket. The information I posted on my site here still applies: Subaru 16-pin rear camera operation

The only difference is that 2013-2014 Legacy/Outback models with the FT nav also use a pin on the 16-pin harness to pipe a signal from the car's Body Integrated Unit (BIU) into the HU to pin #4.

You should find that your car already provides the reverse gear signal on your 28-pin harness. You do not need to add any other wires to that harness.

I see in your picture that your car has a 16-pin harness with wires on the pins for the camera input. Are you replacing an OEM camera that has died? I can build a harness that passes through the parking brake and BIU signals from your car's 16-pin harness into the HU and has an RCA jack and 6V power lead for an aftermarket camera.

Also, fairly recently someone let me know that there are now vendors on eBay selling aftermarket replacements for OEM Subaru cameras that will connect to the car's harness in the trunk or tailgate. Those are much less expensive than the OEM cameras from Subaru.

  2. Noob question. I have a 2014 STI A-Line originally doesnt have SWC. So i bought a 2nd hand steering wheel that has SWC. I also bought the ASWC-1. However, my player harness only has 14 pins and im not sure how to tap the required wires to make the SWC on my steering work.

So i took the bottom part of my steering wheel and the one next to the yellow wire shows like this:

    https://imgur.com/a/fXv19

It has more pins so i do need help.

Need more information to even begin to help:

    * What is your car's model year and model?

    * What is the model number on the head unit that Subaru originally fitted in your car? (even if you're replacing it, that will tell me useful info about your car's factory wiring).

    * What buttons (if any) are on the steering wheel that Subaru originally fitted in your car? What kind of cruise control buttons (if any)?

    * What buttons are on the steering wheel that you're wanting to retrofit into your car?

This thread (trabbic's) is for 2005-2007 Legacy/Outback models. For later years and/or different models, see links in my post here (on the Forester forums).

  3. ...

Also noticed that there is an un-used port on the 7" Radio (circled in red) - anyone know what it's for?

    ...

Anyone know what this port is for ?

That 8-pin socket on the back of the HU is used by the STARLINK Safety and Security services system. The telematics module (shown on Subaru's wiring diagrams as the "Data Communication Module") sends a mute signal to the OEM HU via that socket. The car's 8-pin harness (designated i272) only has that one wire.

2016 was the first year that was offered in Legacys, and only in the USA.

  4. Well after living with my LGT for almost a week, I have to agree with danbart and c_hunter. The major problem with the system is that it is scaled wrong. A range of 65 to 85 (in reality 66 to 84) does not allow enough adjustment on the bottom end. A more proper range might be 60 to 80 (in reality 61 to 79).

    ...

Has anybody looked into this idea further? I would have thought a simple resistor in line with the interior temperature sensor would accomplish the shift? Perhaps a little trim pot?

The problem with that idea is that you might need to lower the resistance rather than raise it. Depends on how the sensor works.

I'm guessing that the existing temperature sensor is already providing the HVAC control module with a wider range. The issue is that the CM is programmed with the current limits.

If the program is in EEPROM, there might simply be one or two bytes you could change to decrease the lower limit. That would be a better solution, since the display would still show accurate temperatures (at least, as accurate as they are currently).

We'd first need someone to dump and disassemble the code in the control module. Note that this is the unit behind the glove box, not the factory head unit (radio) or one of the JDM HVAC panels.

  5. ...

i just bought a 2005 Legacy GT Wagon, and i'm picking up a radio out of a 2009 Legacy Limited tomorrow. anyone know if the ipod kit from a 2011 Impreza will work? or do i need the one SPECIFICALLY for the 09?

My guess is no. The main harness for the radio changed in 08 for the Impreza, 09 for the Forester, and 10 for the Legacy/Outback. I'm guessing they changed the accessory harness at the same time, although I'm not sure.

The Subaru OEM sat radio kits connect to a secondary 20-pin expansion port socket (SIE bus) on the rear of the OEM head units. The type of harness the HU uses for the main speaker/power connections doesn't matter.

I don't know whether the newer Impreza sat radio kit will work with any of the 2008 or 2009 Legacy/Outback OEM HUs that have aux capability (P-204UN, P-204UH, P-206UNB, or P-206UHB). We need to hear from somebody who has tried it. I have a feeling that it won't work.

  6. Grave dig but does the factory nav have a mute output wire that goes ground when voice prompts are given?

See my post #15, above. The monitor screen has a pin that gets (I think) +5V when the nav system wants to talk or chime.

On the under-seat nav unit, the 10-pin power connector has a pin labeled "LMUTE" on Kenwood's schematics that might provide a mute signal. Subaru's wiring diagrams do not show a factory wire on that slot on the car's harness plug.

  7. I just bought a Kenwood DDX9903S, and it doesn't seem to have the jack shown in that diagram. Is it only on non-North American Kenwood units?

Correct. A small number of models outside North America have built in steering wheel capability like jabz's DDX9016DABS. Those can be connected directly to resistive-style SWCs, and have menus to "learn" the buttons.

Your DDX9903S will need a steering wheel interface module (ASWC-1, Maestro, etc.).

Finally, it's my understanding that if you use one of SVXdc's harnesses, you do NOT need to tap the harness (i.e., add wires) in the connectors by the steering column under the dash - you can just use the wires in SVX's harness at the radio side. Is this correct?

Not correct. Since your 2006 LGT did not have audio SWCs from the factory, there is a segment of the SWC wires missing between your car's B68 harness plug (at the steering column) and harness B36 (on the bulkhead). You would need to add that missing segment.

On the i85 aux harness that you ordered from me, I inadvertently included the 2 SWC wires. Sorry to have gotten your hopes up.

  8. I dunno if anyone has asked but I saw this says a/t does this work on a manual?

Yes. On a manual, the B68 harness simply won't have any wires for the shift up/down buttons. It will always have the wires for horn and cruise controls, and also SWCs (if the car had those from the factory).

See my post #383 earlier in this thread.

For a car without factory SWCs, you would need to add new pins/wires for the appropriate slots into B68 (ideally with the proper pins salvaged from a wrecked car's B68).

Some day, maybe we'll identify the proper terminal to fit that plug.

  9. ...

    I've found matching harnesses for R316 (2009) / R386 (2010-up) (the 24-pin one).

    ...

What is the Metra Part #?

I'm not aware of any Metra part that fits the car's 24-pin harness. I've been obtaining the raw connector shells and terminals from suppliers who sell in quantity.

Anyone who wants to contact me about those, please use e-mail (or if you use PM, include your e-mail address).

  10. Howdy! You might fill in more info in your profile (model year? any other interesting mods?)

The WRX Atlanta folks are having their next dinner meet this Tuesday, 3/15 at Varner's Tavern in Smyrna. 25% discount on food there (the mgr owns a 2015 WRX). All Subarus (and even non) are welcome. Thread link FFI.

  11. All set to hook up the camera

    ...

hooked up the camera to test before mounting, and nothing  checked, then double checked the wiring, tried switching things around, verified the [OEM HU's] voltage output (solid +6V) and nothing.

Concerned the camera was dead (it's a Rydeen Duo - going for the OEM look) ran the wires out to the battery ... to give the camera +12V ..., and everything works just fine. So apparently the Duo won't work at +6V?

I already e-mailed DrD123 awhile back about this, but that Rydeen is obviously a counterfeit.

A real Rydeen will definitely work from 6V, have a serial number, and come in a box with full-color graphics on all 6 sides (and the matching serial number). See this thread.

  12. I experimented with the HU some more, looking to see if it had a key to turn off the guide lines. No luck so far.

I did remember that you can select the language (English/French/Spanish) in normal operation mode. While viewing the rear camera image (car in reverse), press the SCROLL/TUNE knob to adjust brightness, press again to adjust contrast, and again to select language. Still no key there to turn off the lines.

I just noticed that on the Camera System screen, the first line actually says use 1/2 to "select range marking type" (not angle). I'm guessing that was a late change, and originally those keys did select among different styles of lines (as some other Subaru HUs do). Could people with the other models (PE658U1, PE669U1, etc.) check theirs to see if that menu is different?

jojorios updated his post #177 (above) with the image from his Pioneer ND-BC6 camera.

  13. Here's the correct procedure to enter the diagnostics menus on the Legacy/Outback PE6xxU1 head units:

    1. Turn key to ACC
      .
    2. Turn HU to audio off
      .
    3. Press and hold HU's preset "1" key
      .
    4. Then also press and hold preset keys 4, 5, and 6 (so end up holding 4 buttons). The order of these 3 doesn't matter, but you must press each one distinctly (you can't mash all 3 simultaneously).
      .
    5. You should see screen titled "System Diagnostic Menu"

      1751801210_PE6xxU1DiagnosticMenu1.jpg.34173b99d5df5e6b0b4d1640d5638b59.jpg

    6. Option "Confirmation / Adjustment" is highlighted. Press SCROLL/TUNE knob (button) to select.
      .
    7. On next screen, "System .. > Confrimation [sic] / Adjustment" ...

      2039052781_PE6xxU1DiagnosticMenu2.jpg.1a10f618e93b3234daf16672d2b4d50b.jpg

use SCROLL/TUNE knob to highlight "Camera System", press knob to select.
      .

    8. Next screen shows camera image (or black) with parking guide lines.

      1592586501_PE6xxU1CameraAdjust.jpg.19f83078b57e85e6591d23c5571b2265.jpg

    9. Use preset buttons 1/2 to adjust lines' angle, 3/4 for up/down, and 5/6 for left/right.
      .
    10. Use SCROLL/TUNE knob to select "OK" to save (or select BACK to discard changes), then press knob.

(so step 4 was the only thing wrong in the older service manuals. When I tried to figure this out myself awhile back, I think I got as far as doing combinations of 3 buttons at once, but not 4)

You can adjust the horizontal and vertical position +/- 20. Moving the horizontal all the way left centers the lines on the screen. The rotation ranges from 1 to 7, with 4 being 0 degrees. The angle does not change much (maybe +/- 5 degrees?).

Note that the lines shown on this setup screen are not the same as those shown in normal operation (compare above picture to Hepy117's in post #94 in this same thread).

The PE627U1 HU does not mirror the camera's image (that is, it does not change the video signal to make it look like the view you would see looking in your rear view mirror). So the HU is relying on the OEM camera to do that itself.

There don't appear to be any options to change the warning text language, or to completely turn off/on the guide lines (as you can on some other Subaru HUs).

You can view the camera adjust screen even if the camera enable pin (#8) is not grounded. However, if the enable pin is not grounded, the 6V power supply will not activate (even if you shift into reverse).

Conversely, with the enable pin grounded, the 6V power will activate in the camera adjust screen, even without shifting into reverse.

I discovered that the PE627U1 keeps the 6V camera power 'on' for about 7 to 8 seconds after you leave that screen, and also in normal rear camera operation after you shift out of reverse. In both cases, the HU immediately changes to the next menu or screen. The extended time may be to allow you to shift into and out of reverse repeatedly, preventing the camera from power cycling (perhaps to accommodate a camera that has a lag at power-up before it displays an image).

The procedure to access the diagnostics menus was corrected in later versions of Subaru's service manuals than what was shown in those I had downloaded awhile back.

Thanks go out to Craig Richards, parts mgr. at Ocean Subaru in NH for the corrected procedure!

  15. Great write-up and pictures!

Because the leads inside most RCA cables are extremely small-gauge (and fragile), I recommend that you fold them back onto the outer jacket of the RCA cable, as I show in my pictures in this post. That will provide much better strain relief. As Dispatch20 said, make the wires from the Molex plug a bit longer. I suggest that you have enough length on all of the wires to fold back onto the RCA cables's jack by ~1.25" (~33 mm).

Tip: practice stripping the RCA cable, either on the opposite portion that you won't be using, or by initially cutting it longer than you plan to use. On some with a really tiny center conductor, when you try to strip its insulation you end up completely severing it.

  16. Marietta billiard. I think.

Yep. Although I don't know how much they are involved, since it appears to fill the entire shopping center's parking lot ("Town and Country", about 0.4 miles due east of the Big Chicken on Roswell Rd). Looks big.

(and I'd never heard of it before, either)

  17. There's now a mystery of how some sedans can have the factory camera wires at the trunk harness but not at the HU harness. The wiring diagrams don't show any intermediate junction where they could stop, but there must be -- the wires wouldn't just dead-end somewhere mid way.

My logic was backwards. The segment from i146 (HU's 28-pin) to i154 (intermediate junction somewhere around the passenger kickpanel) is a separate run, and could be missing, as GTEASER just confirmed. [Dude! I thought you had confirmed your 28-pin harness did have the factory wires before now! :icon_frow]

What should not be possible is to see factory camera wires at i146 (HU) and at harness R24 (trunk) and those wires not be connected between.

That logic doesn't apply on an Outback. Those have an additional segment which could be missing (R332 to R346).

But the bottom line is that you need to look at both ends and check continuity before assuming that factory wires connect end-to-end.

Any idea where the 154 connector is located? Not looking forward to tearing the interior out to find it. ;)

It's in the passenger footwell, behind the kickpanel. It's the same harness that has the reverse gear wire that people can tap into (for installing an aftermarket HU in a car that doesn't have that signal on any of the OEM radio harnesses).

Be careful with that -- it has most of the rear lights/turn signals, trunk/hatch release, rear wiper (wagons), and even the right rear wheel speed sensor.

I'd say rather than messing with that (and trying to find the proper terminals to fit that connector), it's better to cut your losses and just run an aftermarket camera's cable all the way to the HU.

You can offer that RCA cable and power wire I supplied to someone like Hepy117 or DrD123, and I'll make an alternate set for you that fits your car's 28-pin plug.

(those pins on my cables did fit your R60, right?)

  18. I just mailed some wires with terminals to GTEASER that I think will fit his car's R60 plug and allow him to connect an aftermarket camera back there. Will post details after he tries them out.

I also updated my post #62 with the information people have posted. Please check to make sure I got everything correct, let me know what's wrong or missing. Anyone else who hasn't sent their info, please do.

  19. David, here are some pics with measurements of the pins in the trunk connector. They were a snap to release and pull out.

    ...

Thanks! Looks like a match for the pictures of these that I found. I've ordered some from a vendor in Japan so we'll see if they work.

When you have a chance, I'd be interested to see close-ups like that of each unique side of the R60 plug (without the ruler or fingers).

  21. Back to camera discussion...

81811AJ05A (MSRP $78.47) is the alternate OEM trunk harness (for sedans) that includes the connector for the OEM camera. Picture:

(the 2010-2013s must be cars with OEM navigation, since those are the only cars that had a rear camera and a video-capable screen on the HU)

To those of you with 2012 models that have the OEM camera wiring from the HU to the trunk or tailgate: Has anyone actually tried swapping in that alternate OEM trunk harness? How much work does that take? (think about all the disassembly of the trunk lid and all of its lights). Will you also need alternate trim piece(s) on the trunk where the OEM camera mounts?

  22. But in theory I should be able to get the factory harness connections if that is the case? I would hope it is prewired as the Nav option was available and that I have a premium model.

Your car is not pre-wired. And the necessary factory wiring for a camera won't be available as repair parts from Subaru, because that is integrated into a much more expansive "tree" of wiring for many other systems in the car. Did you not see this post from earlier in this thread?

Tip: If a car is not 100% pre-wired for a factory camera, go with an aftermarket camera. You'll avoid headaches and come out much cheaper. Many cameras out there look "stock".

To answer your original question, yes, retrofitting one of the OEM 4.3" display HUs in place of your OEM PE645U1 HU is technically possible, but you would need a shopping list full of OEM parts to have everything work. Please continue any further discussion about transplants in this thread: 2014 Base Stereo to 2014 Premium with color screen.

I thought that only the limited models had the USB in the armrest but my car has it with the aux cable connection. I thought that was weird since I don't have a Harmon Kardon system and no bluetooth steering wheel control. I was seriously considering doing an aftermarket navigation, maybe even the OEM style radio, but I wanted to ideally have a factory camera with the factory wiring connected to either a factory radio but more than likely an in dash navigation.

That means your 2010 has Subaru's "Media Hub" (USB) accessory device. That was the only way you got USB in any of the 2010-2011 models without navigation.

When you switch to an aftermarket head unit, you can retain that USB socket (without the interface module). See this page.
