Sold #57 a few weeks ago to a great guy in Dayton, OH. Not sure if he's on here, but he's apart of the local scene and has had previous Subarus -

Cincy05LGT's 2005 LGT Build

Quit stalling, Yson -
Kamak is definitely the higher-end turbo. Wonder how much difference the 5 blade vs 6 blade really is. Let us know how the tuning goes!

Cincy05LGT's 2005 LGT Build

Yson still refuses to go ELH ( -_-) Also put on a front lip so we can do photos soon -
I wouldn't worry about it. While it's an unfortunate scenario, it's not like any other turbo companies have zero failures.
-
Just out of curiosity, how long ago was it that you bought the turbo?
-
How much psi were you running? I'm at 1.4bar tapering to 1.3bar, and running an anti-lag of sorts. Hope I don't blow a blade off As a side note, I also have Kinugawa EL headers en route to me. I'll post up some pics, but that may be for another thread...
-
I might have 1~2k miles on my car, since I walk to work, but I just visited my tuner buddy to get off spring pressure this past weekend. All I can say is 'GODDAMN!'. He wasn't comfortable having boost set to 20psi to redline, due to age of the engine, no FMIC, no external gate; so it spikes at 1.4bar and tapers to 1.3. It pulls hard at 1.3, but truly shines starting at 1.4 bar. I am super happy with going ful option, and the 18G is a great fit for my driving preference!

The boost threshold is pretty low on the turbo. You can feel it start to get into boost in the upper 2k range, and then it starts hauling quickly from there

Yeah, I am in the middle of E-tuning with my buddy. He wants to get all the fueling, AVCS, timing, etc. set up and out of the way. That way, when my other friend and I go up to visit him in Michigan and hang out for a weekend, and to get our cars tuned, he can then do the "fun tuning" (upping the boost). As of right now, it is still on spring pressure, but he thinks we are close to getting it all dialed in. That being said, this turbo has already far exceeded his expectation, and mine. So much so that he has bought himself the TD05 20g billet STS for his new EJ207 swap. Daily driving, it is much stronger than a stage 2 car, doesn't feel noticeably laggier, has incredible transient response, and it already pulls like a freight train at .9bar! I would really recommend to everyone, save up just a bit longer and splurge on the STS/billet upgrade. It is truly worth it!
-
I'm still in the middle of being tuned, but even on the basemap, I can definitely tell that there is A LOT more of a usable power band. I don't consider it laggy at all, especially on-and-off transient boost response. My tuner's friend thought that the spool video I posted was a normal ball bearing turbo, not a journal bearing

Very nice!! Be sure to post your thoughts when it's installed

This is really confusing as our local friend who has the distributor account is Bruce, and Kinugawa's rep is also named Bruce . Small world... But glad to hear that if you guys contact them directly, that you're given the option to upgrade!
-
We just need to convince Bruce to buy a Kamak instead of a full option Kinu...
-
As stated earlier in the thread, I don't know how you would get the STS upgrade without contacting them directly, or finding a distributor to get the upgrade. As of now, it does not appear to show up as an upgrade on the site The difference between Kamak and Kinugawa, are that Kamaks come standard as billet/STS. Kinugawa starts as cast, and then you can add on options, and then the price goes up, naturally. The specific differences between a fully optioned out Kinugawa and an equivalent Kamak? That I do not know...
-
I don't know if there is a newer version or such of the STS for Kamak, but it is now available on Kinugawa turbos, for less money. The STS has shown it has similar spool characteristics to the BB turbos
-
I've never dealt with their customer service, so I do not know, unfortunately
-
12.6 1/4 stock? Yeah, super slow...
-
My tuner and mechanic were both unsure of whether there was actually a difference, or if the STS was some marketing gimmick, since they have not experienced one first-hand. I was willing to be the guinea pig, since at the very least, the inconel STS wheel will be more durable, as I will now be running high-RPM, conditional anti-lag of sorts. We are all very happy that it really does make a very noticeable impact. With the STS upgrade, it should keep the journal bearing turbo response on par with ball bearing ones. We can't wait to see how it does once it's off of WG pressure, and tuned! Unless it has changed, BNR reuses VF40 housings, so a tech inspector will be non the wiser
-
My buddy just sent me this to show the STS response [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giC0hHg1B30]Kinugawa Billet 18G STS Response - YouTube[/ame] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seQbug0xBPE]18g - YouTube[/ame] I'm going to be running a basemap until my other friend/tuner can come down from Michigan to tune it in person. That being said, my friend had a brand new Mustang 5.0 try to race him on the highway in my car, and it only could put a car length on the LGT. On a 14psi basemap.
-
Damnit, John. Your greasy fingers are going to throw off the precise balancing of my turbo!
-
Are they really going to look that closely to see if the turbo does not look OEM??? If they are, why not get a BNR upgrade?
-
Well, to be fair, it's a heavy box that is shipped directly from Taiwan...
