  1. Back when I first got the car, we took it down to San Diego during Christmas to visit the in-laws. Wife's grandpa is a bit of a car aficionado, in the sense that he likes driving and taking care of nice cars. So after I finally traded in my old Accord, he was definitely keen on going for a ride in my new LGT.

Well, he lives in a relatively slow-speed-street neighborhood that's bordered by a large (3-4 lanes in one direction) street. So I was first putzing around his neighborhood, but soon ended up at a red light on pole position on the main street, with pretty much nobody around. So I turn to him, and I ask him "OK Grandpa, I'm gonna take off a bit fast, that fine with you?" He's like "Sure, no problem."

Green hits and I gun it. Even to this day, I don't think I did a more perfect launch. I caught Grandpa waaaaay off-guard because up until then, we were going 25-30 max, and he was not expecting this kind of juice.

We blasted down the straightway (thankfully it was a 55 zone), but soon had to simmer down because we caught up to everyone else. After the run Grandpa turned to me and said: "It's been a long time since I've gone that fast in a car."

And this came from a man who does not have a gentle right foot, that's for sure.

  2. This was at Sema show a few years back. Thought it was pretty cool. I think it could be remade a bit shorter between the trailer wheel and the back wheel of the bike.. I wonder how it does around corners?

They could cut 30% or more of the length if they didn't have that shopping basket on the back. That just makes everything quite long, for not that much utility (as far as I can tell).

  3. Speaking of lasers, I laser-cut these tweeter brackets from black acrylic awhile back.

All sets have been claimed, but I can spend an evening at work and make some more if needed. If you guys are adventurous enough, I can also give you the .ai files so you can create them as well.

From my previous post, with regards to what I can make with the laser cutter: "Whatever else you can design and cut from a piece of flat wood or acrylic, about 8 x 11" in size. Metals can be engraved, but not cut with our base model. We use the laser at work for rapid prototyping, but I can borrow time on it for projects -- so I don't necessarily run a small batch fab-shop, just helping out a few internet friends."

  4. I was visiting family in San Diego the other day, and I went to the post office. Did my business, went back into the car with my father-in-law. I started futzing with my phone, trying to find where our next stop was (Staples).

Some older gent walks up to my door, and proceeds to open it. He looks terribly confused for a second, then his face gets this look of surprise/embarrassment - and then he apologizes, "Oh I'm sorry I thought this was my car, so sorry."

No big deal, of course, and he goes around my car and into the next car parked on my right.

    It was a brand-new dark-grey Jaguar XJ. :D

  5. People who believe there is something wrong with my brakes and are hell-bent on having me fix them...in order of annoyance:

    Wife (in car)

    Subaru service advisor (outside car)

mother (inside her house as I pulled up)

19 year old daughter (in car)

X-wife (inside her house as I dropped off my daughter)

Random guy at work I don't know (inside his car)

I'm assuming it's the SLAP (squeal like a pig) syndrome? Your build list says you got Hawk street pads -- which ones? HPS or these new-fangled High Performance Street 5.0 pads?

  6. Some people suck. Drove into work today and some dude decided to spit the crap he coughed up out the window and on to the front of my car and windshield. I was in the lane next to him.

That's when you go in front of him and clean your windshield, using more than enough wiper fluid ;)

  7. It's the whole enchilada bro!, mortgage, taxes, PMI. I am pissed that the focking FHA changed the rules about the PMI after I bought. I had a plan and the damned goberment focked me on that, so here I am 3 years later still paying $450 a month more than I should be.

And yes, I did time everything perfect with a purchase in late 2011, but believe me, I was a stress case for about 9 months trying to make it happen. I have PMI, which sucks, because my ex-wife bled me for most of my retirement and I couldn't do 20% down, but right now the equity increase is more than 50% more from when I bought and plan to refinance soon to get out from under it.

Marbelous darling, marbelous. Similar dealie here -- I had to wait six months for the house to come through, but it finally did... and then the market magically shot up. So it worked out very nicely a couple of years ago, but I can't say the same thing if I tried buying today.

Refi as soon as you can. $450/month PMI means you'll pay off your refi costs in roughly 10 months by switching to a conventional loan, and then it's clear sailing from there :)

  8. Our mortgage is exactly the same $ as we would pay in rent for the same house, but we get several thousand $ credit on our taxes every year.....so I have more $ to spend on the car. Plus, gaining buttloads of equity so when I retire and sell the house and buy an RV to travel, I will have money for a trailer and a racecar to tow behind it. ;)

You make it sound easy, bro... But you also bought at the right time, and for the right circumstances.

Your mortgage payment is the same as the rental -- but what do you consider to be the "mortgage"? The lien on the property, or the whole enchilada that includes property taxes, hazard insurance, and (possibly) mortgage insurance? If it's just the lien, then it's an apples to oranges comparison, since all that other stuff adds another 20-30% on top of the lien. If by your "mortgage" you mean the entire payment, that's great!

If you're a buyer and don't have 20% down, *boom* that's another payment in the form of mortgage insurance that you're paying for the privilege of house ownership. And I heard that FHA loans now mandate mortgage insurance for the life of the loan, so there's no longer the "oh I'll get rid of it in five years" like it used to. So unless your home's equity goes up by 20% (and you refinance, adding another $2-3K to the house), you're stuck in PMI land forever. (Well, at least until you sell the house or die. :))

Don't get me wrong -- I love my house, and I think house ownership is awesome -- but it's not nearly the same bag of beans as renting a place for a year or two.

  9. I gave up cable television and have been using roku for a while...mostly for netflix, amazon prime, and nbc news.

Recently, I started watching motorsport broadcasts on youtube.

Look for "tudor united sports car championship". You will find full broadcasts with no commercials. Prototype, PC, GTLM, GTD.

I went down the YouTube rabbit hole and found this:

    Absolute insanity.

  10. TIL that DC_Titus is deaf.

    Anywhoo:

    Sunshade closed: no real noise

Sunshade open, sunroof closed: medium discernible noise that sometimes gets irritating

Sunshade open, sunroof in "popup" position: whistles me a diddy every time to the point that I never use this option when going over 30+ MPH (so basically never)

Sunshade open, sunroof in full-open position: I'm driving a mini cabriolet, especially if the rear windows are open

No idea if my sunroof was ever fixed under recall. What's the best way to check?

  11. Awhile back when I've owned the LGT for a month, I went to the local (super-small) dealership to pick up some random parts. As I pull in, two of the salesmen flock over like the seagulls of Capistrano.

Now mind you — I had been driving my old Accord for a decade prior, so I wasn't accustomed to receiving attention from anyone aside from the occasional John Q. Lawman. So I hadn't exactly prepared for this kind of interaction.

Salesman: "Hey is that a Legacy GT?!"

    Me: "Yea...?"

Salesman: "Holy crap we never saw one before!"

    Me: "Cool...?"

Salesman: "Hey can we see the inside???"

    Me: "Sure"

And I open the door for him, and this dude's like a kid in a candy store, while the other one is admiring from afar. "OMG it has the thing, and that other thing, and bla bla bla, and it was made back in 2010 (while he's looking at the manufacturer's sticker), and..."

I seriously didn't know how to react to all this, so I probably was a bit less enthusiastic than I could've been

  12. The GT has a different slave cylinder than the 2.5i and it includes a small spring and rubber piece, which is apparently some sort of small damper device, but it is definitely secondary and minor compared to the main damper. I am not going to bother removing mine until I have to do a clutch.

OK now I get it. For the LGT, this is what you remove (in addition to the main damper) and this is how it looks like, but reeg420 couldn't find it because he doesn't have an LGT.

  13. Those pics of the machined parts look marvelous -- I have a feeling the final parts will turn out great!

A bit of a problem: I just got a shipment notification for the Subaru part. They were supposed to just ship the sunshade I ordered separately, but it looks like the part came in as well. So I may or may not be in for one of the machined parts depending on what gets delivered. They certainly charged me for the part as well as the sunshade :spin:

  14. I placed my order with subarupartswarehouse on May 2nd — and called last Thursday/Friday about its status, since I still didn't get any shipping confirmation. The gentleman was super-apologetic and said it was on natty backorder, so this went downhill real fast as soon as we all learned about the mod :roll eyes:

If you can provide a part of equal (or better) quality, I'd be in for one as long as they don't end up shipping the backorder in the meantime.
