When pulling the axle how does one prevent pulling the seal out ? That is my only confusion with this process? I need to replace my driver side half shaft once it warms up a bit and wanting to get the process down ahead of time. I would think there is a clip of some type at the end of the axle holding it on the front diff.
Do yourself a favor and have an extra seal on hand. It's worth the $8

Makes sense, and for $7, why not? I plan on replacing mine once I figure out whether or not I'm going to rebuild, I was just eager to get everything back together.

+1. I reused my 2nd one because it was a day old, but I'd recommend replacing it.

MT or AT? Axle seal at the differential?
+1.
Either way, I think it's dealer-only. It was only like $7 though.

Yep, just replied to the PM, but I used a hook pick and went around the inside edge of the seal where it meets the diff. I was able to get it out without damaging it at all. Apparently, I pushed it in too far the first time and it didn't seal properly

Done! Whole process took about 2 hours, including replacing the axle seal. Didn't need a slide hammer or hub puller

^Very nice!

Both Subaru of Plano and Sewell Subaru are quoting me $200+ for the bearing/hub assembly. Where are you guys getting it for ~$140?

Next project for me. Looks easy enough

Finished mine last night, still have the bearing noise and now it's leaking worse than before. Pretty sure the dealer parts guy sold me the wrong seal. Now I get to take it apart again. Yay!

Pics?

I got mine from eBay for $90. It was a stock one that had been resurfaced. I would check there first.

Got under there this evening, and the boots on the axle look fine, but the seal must be gone because I can see where the fluid has been leaking. This has me more concerned though because there's a sound reminiscent of a bad wheel bearing coming from that side, but I tried moving the wheel to see if the bearings might be bad and it seems fine. Now I'm hoping it's not indicative of something horribly wrong inside my transmission.

Stock flywheel is dual-mass and typically cannot be machined. It requires replacement which = $$. Swap to a single-mass WRX-spec flywheel (not lightweight IMO), and Spec Stage 2 (or 2+) clutch.

Going to attempt this tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.

I wouldn't think so

Interesting. That's a lot lower than I expected.

Gotcha. Seal is only available from the dealer, right?
-
Thanks! I guess I'll go ahead and order the axle. My only concern is messing up the seal.

This doable without an impact?

lowering springs recommendations/suggestions please

That question has been asked before. The LGT lowering springs are too short, the ride would likely be horrible.
