  1. Hayward and Scott in the uk make twin scroll stuff for jdm legacy/sti among other cars. I got one from them. shipping is a bit pricey though.

Thanks for that info. Looks like the link below is the right one for application but they do not list auto/manual or anything.

I sent an inquiry email to them to try to make sure I can find the correct one.

I don't know anything about international shipping, but with a $271 price tag (converted from euros), I wonder if it would exceed $400. Still probably not the worst option ever!

  2. Long time since I lurked/posted here. Glad to see a bunch of you have taken the plunge and tackled this swap.

I'm finally back to getting to a place where I would have time/space to perform the task and get my wagon back on the road.

I've been reading through everything that has been added and I was still wondering what you guys have been doing for downpipes. Through my searching I've never found an imported ej20x/y with an unhacked dp. Moore performance can get the AVO cast TD04-hla outlet elbows, but take a minimum of 150 days to get stateside they quoted. Maybe Paul from AVO is still on here and may be able to do better. Maybe my internetting sucks more in my old age now, but I haven't been able to find the JDM HKS dp either, even knowing it will come at a high price.

  3. So I will likely move all this to a new thread once I get down to brass tacks. Anyone that's done this before me feel free to suggest additions to the list; if you're really interested I could email the xls. Below is what I'm putting together to track costs for this for others in the future. So far, still on the surface cheaper than replacing shortblock + machine work. And yes, the below assumes doing your own work with all the tools preexisting. The spreadsheet looks a lot prettier than this, but you get the idea.

Would also like to give a quick thanks to underdog. I was able to find a lot of useful and cool information in his JDM Twinscroll Project thread. http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/jdm-twinscroll-project-118677.html?t=118677

  4. Don't waste your time with the JDM harness. It is set up for a RHD car and would be way more work than it is worth to mess with. Just use the US harness and add the necessary wires.

That wire looks like it would work.

Figures I do critical thinking at work all day, but miss the most obvious reason for not using it .

So yeah. I don't have any existing engine. I will need to source USDM intake with everything attached. Isn't terrible, since I can use USDM yellows without the funky noise dampening fuel rails.

  5. Shielded twisted pair is readily available. What I used was made by Belden, I don't remember the part number. Most of the wiring doesn't even need to be shielded for this swap. I used the US harness and made an overlay harness with the additional wiring necessary to run the exhaust cams. To get the proper terminals to connect to the ECU I bought a set of ECU harness connectors from a junkyard and removed the terminals I needed. Then I inserted them into the connectors on my good harness and soldered my overlay harness onto those new terminals.

Thanks mondtster! So basically you got a spool of something similar to this? Was there a reason you didn't go with the JDM engine harness?

Whenever I go for the engine, I plan on grabbing year appropriate ECU with connector plugs and a couple inches of harness to de and re pin. In reality I was hoping to get the complete engine with harness, and run an overlap harness like you mentioned from the main engine connector back through the firewall to the new ECU. Again, really need to dig into the pin out for the JDM and USDM to see if that's feasible without a lot of re pinning.

You won't be hitting 270-290hp with the stock td04 / vf38. Have never seen any plots of them even making 200wkw (268hp)

Mine, with a vf45, fromtmount, intake, exhaust gets 192kw (258hp) which is about the max they really make, even at that point turning the boost up does not much other than producing hot air.

The TD04HL-20T (20T not 20G, 20G wasn't a thing for these turbo's) would get you into the 200-220kw (270-295hp) region though. Can get what is essentially the same kinugawa turbo from Mamba too.

Ah, thank you for giving some actual real world feedback. I feel like a thread like this could use it until more of us go through with it!

When I mentioned 20G I meant I thought kingugawa had offered a proper flanged TD05-20G unit. Fully aligned with you on the TD04-20T. Thanks for the links too, I may be needing them!

  6. Element, this was a concern of mine considering the swap due to CT emissions regs.

You can absolutely not pass emissions with the JDM ECU. Will come up "not supported" when they hook it up to the state machine. I've talked with my tuner and basically the solution for our discussion is you run the JDM ECU (after flash or whathaveyou) everyday except for emissions testing day when you swap your USDM one in with a friendly opensource flash to get your re-up.

I haven't even performed the swap yet but after my months of research I absolutely wouldn't pass on getting the exhaust AVCS hooked up, or perform a workaround to fix the timing.

I still don't know why folks on this side of the pond are swapping intake manifolds though. Is it just because it's easier to do that and have your yellow 550 sidefeeds which flow more than the blue 465 sidefeeds that come on the JDM variant? Or is it simply due to ease of getting the USDM harness over? I need to find and review the engine main connectors for both and understand how different they are at that location.

I've still been on the fence about this swap, but the price is certainly alluring. I'm considering the purchase and documenting everything so there is actually full documentation on this swap possibility.

The other thing folks should note is that the VF38 that comes on the EJ20X (auto), and the TD04HLA on the EJ20Y (manual) have unique up pipe and downpipe flanges. They're not even common with the VF36/37 so you can't just go and source one and swap it on for more power; you would need to get new headers/UP/DP. Kingugawa used to sell a direct fit TD04HLA with upgrades as well as a 20G with the correct inlet/outlet on hotside, but have since stopped from what I can tell.

All that being said, if you stick with the stock snail that these engines come with, I still cannot see how the engine complete, adding 8 wires for dual avcs, and the jdm ecu + tune are anywhere near the cost of an EJ255 rebuild. Yes, power limits will be hit fast, so if you're looking for a rocket then well we all know how that goes dollar-wise with Subaru's. From what I can scrape up on UK and AU forums, these will peak at around 270-290 at the wheels with tune/bolt-on's.

Mondtster: Would you be willing to share where you got your shielded materials to make the additional part of the harness, and perhaps your assembly process?

  7. I think this would only work if the harnesses are the "same" configurations.

It would be super annoying to have to swap an entire engine harness and possibly bulkhead harness anytime you'd have to get emissions testing.

You are correct that you have to have a ton of codes turned off and ready monitors forced on. I really don't wven know if the ej20x/y will even run on a usdm ecu if you keep dual avcs and intake manifold/sensors.

There are documented cases even in this thread, as well as in my confirmation from a very well known shop that the motor can be dropped in and operated, even without flashing for the engine (obviously rich/crappy). I think legacydan(Ireland) and mookz come to mind?

The only sensory differences I think are the exhaust avcs solenoids, exhaust cam sensor, and possibly a knock sensor.

I could be way wrong but I'm just piecing together multiple sources and what folks have done and run into. I'm totally up for debate/learning!

  8. Do you have emissions testingwhere you live?

Will you get the harness and ecu with the engine?

I'd say go for it if no testing and you get the harness/ecu.

You touch on a topic i did in fact forget to include as I wrote in my tired state last night. So I have seen that the JDM ecu doesn't have all the same emissions monitors that the usdm one does. Being that the car is an 05, in ct, I believe I can have ONE monitor in not ready status and pass emissions (will validate with my friend who is emissions testing certified and owns 3 mienekes).

I do plan on purchasing with ecu and engine harness with intent of utilizing dual avcs once everything is said and done.

So, I wonder if I do what I've always done, and leave the usdm ecu in the car, with an appropriate tune, with emissions monitors ignored when I go for testing. I've passed emissions numerous times catless with open source tunes on both my now gone wrx and existing legacy. Basically I think it'd be like putting a stock exhaust on for testing like folks do, except just a matter of swapping ECU's when being tested so the testing machine sees everything it wants to. Could be a very optimistic scenario so again, just my idea on how to get around if I needed to.

  9. Long time no post. My searching yields some hits on my desired topic; EJ20y swap into 05 lgt. If you search my history, I did an entire drivetrain partout and went down the ls swap path. I still intend to complete, but time more than money inhibits progress and I want to just drive my car for a while again. Considering I've found multiple complete engines, with ecu, and correct trans on pallets from 1400-2300, just seems like a cost effective option in comparison to sourcing all usdm original specifics.

I've done my fair share of research and understand the options that come with it. Frankly, I don't see why folks wouldn't want to enable the dual avcs and reap the benefits of both twin scroll and avcs, but to each thier own.

I'm reviving simply to all the folks that have "dropped in" without plugging in avcs and cam sensor, what the performance was like after having a flash for the new motor? I've read other threads where guys did the drop in route, threw a gt35 on it, and couldn't figure out why they couldn't break 300hp. Believe the issue is the exhaust without being controlled default to full retarded timing and with the absence of proper valve overlap timing kills the top end. Although this certainly hurts a performance oriented turbo setup, surely this limits a relatively mild or even stock swap.

Also curious on why some swap intake. This may only be a requirement if going with stock single scroll setup; I know the JDM intercoolers are different. That is not really a concern of mine since I have my wbr front mount still and a lot of random ic plumbing.

Just looking for a little feedback.

Oh, and my buddy works for EFI and has confirmed they have done 2 of these as drop ins as received from an importer, flashed, and basically customers went on thier way as others have posted here. They were unable to provide me with dyno plots or customer feedback on driveability after the fact.

  10. She still has her car? Havent seen her in a long time, didnt even know she was engaged.

As far as I know yeah... And as far as the engagment... I heard that from a friend a while back. I used to be close with them. Actually used to live with them over on dudley.

  11. Spotted abp wagon in Norwich around 9:30am on sat. Lowered, exhaust, and I think wheels. You were pulling into the dmv road as I was waiting at the light to escape that god-forsaken place .

Lowered, debadged 05 GRP sedan with tints parked next to me at stop & shop in Norwich, CT today.

Sounds like Lacey (Rich from swifts fiance').

  12. Stock EJ255 heads and cams.

EFI went really conservative on the tune to be safe on the new shortblock. I'm going to have it retuned a little more aggressively with a 92 octane tune (and maybe meth) when I get around to it. This setup easily has more in it.

How long it take them to get to your car?

I had diner with Pete (guy that works up front) the other night and he said they're way backed up on engine work... Been that way for awhile as far as I know too.

Did you have oil consumption with the ringland or other tell-tales?

  13. Dusty lives. Haven't seen the purple wheel mobile around lately.

 Yeah I'm alive. Things have been nuts with the new little one (two months old today). And I retired the wagon to the garage for the winter so she'd be pretty hard to spot :). Been driving my fozz or grand cherokee to work everyday.

  14. umm....pics required!

    Take about response fail.....

They started off as a joke, but then they started to grow on me. I get a large kick out of offending musclecarsaretheendallbeall enthusiasts that I might come accross in my travels (being a wagon with purple wheels, driven by a dude:lol:), and getting alot of looks and laughs somehow seems to complete me. The leggy is in the garage sleeping for the winter but I assure you the wheels remain. Might be moving on to something new in the spring so these could be yours!;)

Please excuse my screw jack. On hot summer days my floor jack will leave divets in the pavement, and I didn't have any plywood around .
