A young father is home watching his 4 year old son while his wife is out shopping. The boy has been looking out the front window for a while , Dad slides over to check out what is going on that has the boys attention.
To his horror the boy has been watching two dogs screwing on the sidewalk!
He pulls the child back into the room. The child asks " Dad what were those dogs doing?" Dad's thinking ... I dont need this yet...4 years old... and replies
You see son that dog on the top hurt his foot and that dog on the bottom is his buddy. He's gonna carry him home.
The boy ponders that for a moment and responds. Jeeze dad thats just like people , you go to help someone out and end up getting screwed.

^^ thanks I found that out last night at Wally World. Then they did not have enough bottles of semi so I bought Castrol fluid at Pep Boys
-
Anyone try the full synthetic ? My hope would be for an easier time getting into reverse. If the Semi syn works , and rates this well , I figure the full syn would be even better.

What year is your car ? What trans ? My '05 manual did not have anything like that to deal with ? Could it be a Califorina air pump?

Do they have it in the handy 5 gallon buckets like Subaru oil?

Did mine today. The pointers on this link were a big help. Maybe I can add a few details that may help make somebody day easier.
A) Antiseize on the plug threads-easier to remove next time and easier to install and less likely to cross thread
B) The "pads" on the frame. Use a simple screwdriver to pop the front attachment off and pull them up and out of the way. The little bit of extra room made a ton of difference on the drivers side. Spare yourself a lot of unnecessary ag pop them off and tip it up.
C) As for the pull the battery -not pull the battery argument. If ET is you friend call him over and give him a beer. If you have normal human hands ... pull the battery . Too much crap in the way for me. I could not get a second hand down w/o pulling the battery.
The next time I do this will be quicker but I dont think I could get this down to the 35 minutes that some people quote. My hat goes off to you.

mine stopped working today for a few minutes. definitely sticky. another thing that needs to be fixed.
Weird. Mine did the same today... stuck for a moment and then worked. Sounds like a common fail point.

Fantastic write up. Before I even looked at your profile I said to myself- this guy has got to be an engineer ! You likely saved some others some grief and better yet came up with an easy fix. Anyone can bitch but not everyone can come up with practical solutions. Thanks

Better to have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labotomy.

IMO, using the stock Subie oil filter is a no brainer. That is most likely the filter used when testing our engines and is most likely the filter spec'd by Subie engineers as one that will filter the engine oil correctly and maintain engine life. Why use anything else? No doubt other filters may perform better, but how can one be sure, given our turbo engine and proximity to the exhaust? To me using the filter spec'd by Subaru seems like the best choice.
It seems to be a very good filter. The "best" ? i'm less sure of that.
Auto makers dont normally go with money is no object choices. Just like other parts on the car, things can be improved.

Stick with the stock oil filter.
I did 5200 hard miles on Mobil 1 10W-30 in 1 month and the oil analysis afterwards showed the oil still had active additive and that I could extend my oil change interval.
Again, just stick with the stock oil filter.

Edit: A bigger filter is not necessarily a better filter. Just because it is bigger doesn't mean the filter material has more surface area. Bigger filters also cause a bigger drop between the incoming and outgoing oil pressure, which is not something you want in a turbocharged engine. Ever think about why Subaru engineers purposefully designed a smaller oil filter, just think about that.
Your sure about bigger filters causing a bigger D/P? Thats not my experiance at work. We use pressure guages to monitor D/P across our filters and bigger has smaller D/P that results in HIGHER outlet pressure. As the filter becomes dirty the D/P drops more and more and the otlet pressure drops with it.

I'm using the Purolator Pure 1 filter and the Mobil 1 combo. I also decided to use the pl14612 filter. Its longer and will have more capicity. These are readily avaiable at most stores near me. The Mobil 1 filters are hard to find. The ratings I saw found that the Pure 1 (stock length PL14610) to be almost as good as the Mobil 1 but the Mobil 1 had more capicity. I reasoned that a larger version of the Pure 1 would have more capicity and be readily avaiable so that is why i'm using that combo.

Ive been told that the stock plugs in our Turbos are Iridium not Platinum. The plugs in the LGT are platinum and are only due to be changed every 60,000 miles. We charge 2.2 hrs labor to change just the plugs, or if you change them along with a 60,000 mile service we charge only .5 hours labor (In addition to the 60,000 mile service charge).
-
Thanks. Sounds like 3hr. x $90.00 = $270.00 + Plugs ($40.00 ?)= $300.00+
-
Question ? What does a Subaru dealer charge to do a plug change ?

When I had my SHO the club newsletter kept a running list of these. What a hassle saver. Only had a few problems with the car but every one was covered by a TSB. If we were to do this here Im sure it would be the same. Franklin
