  1. 1. Currently running BS Potenza RE970 A/S 225/45/18 on 07 Spec B's

    2. South central PA

    3. Only using for DD, no track

    4. About 80/20 City/Hwy

    5. Formerly ran Continental DWS (and ContiExtremeProContacts before that)

I strongly disliked the DWS, though, to be fair, I needed an alignment badly so that was likely a contributor. I got maybe 35K out of them before they were completely unsafe in the rain at all. They were unimpressive in anything but dry pavement and a nightmare in the snow.

Before the DWS I ran the ContiExtremePro Contacts and had a blast in them! They were fantastic in all types of weather!

When I switched to the BS RE970's it was a breath of fresh air and my confidence is restored in my AWD once again!

IMO, any decent tire is DONE for any purpose at 35K.

  2. There's a bunch discussed on this thread and probably no consensus. Just read through the pages and you'll get plenty of ideas. I have Kumho Ecsta 4x and I like them quite a bit. And they are reasonably priced. But no matter what tire you pick, they aren't likely to make your car last longer. :)

I am a firm believer in two tire sets for anyone north of the Mason-Dixon line, as IMO all-season tires mean no-season-tires.

That said, there is one tire out there that I and others have used (currently have them on my work commuter) that work well as winter tires and can be run year-round.

They are the Nokian WR, the latest one is the Nokian WR G3. They are Scandinavian all-season tires with an M&S (Mud & Snow) rating.

  3. Alright im being kinda lazy here but i have an 05 lgt 5eat with a stock airbox w/aem filter and i just ordered a catless uppipe and a cobb ap v2. Im runnin 93 oct whats my best option for stage 1 tune? Just use the stage 1 thats on the AP already ?

Yep, just Stage 1 93, the uppipe won't do enough to make Stage 2 worth it.

  4. What does everyone think of Goodyear Eagle GT's 225/45/17's? Mostly dry and about a 70%/30% Highway/City for me. It'll sleet here every so often, and snow, but nothing I'm too concerned now with a AWD car. When it rains, it freaking rains though. Anybody else try these tires in similar conditions?

On other forums, the new GTs don't seem to be liked much....

Being in Texas, why not go for summer tires? On a non-LGT, I've had Hankook evo V12s for well over a year now. EXCELLENT wet traction!, as well as decent for track days without the wear issues (which was fine at the time) of the Nakook RS3s and Azenis 615s (had both on the LGT that was mostly a track car).

Other folks on my other Forums have tried evo V12s, and have found the same great wet traction, including one guy in FL.

  5. If you look at places like Tire Rack, most Summer tires are not recommended for use below 40F. In fact, some of the softer, stickier summer tires have recommendations to not even be stored at temps below freezing.

Winter tires have a compound that performs well in cold temps, with better traction in the dry, wet, slushy, or icy conditions.

Some handle large amounts of snow better than others. It can be a confusing set of choices, but there are tires that work better in heavier snow. Others work better on ice. Others are just better-performing overall in cold, wet conditions.

We don't get heavy snow on the roads here. At worse, I drive two blocks in snow (if it hasn't been plowed in the subdivision), then I hit a state highway, which is always one of the first ones plowed. Winter tires then work well in the wet & slush.

I had Hankook Icebears on the LGT. More of a high-performance winter tire, but handled reasonable amounts of snow just fine (being lowered on coilovers was more of an issue in snow over 4-5"!!).

I now have Blizzaks for my Focus SVT. Got them from the PO, who was very happy with them. I bought the car in March, but we never had any more snow after February this year.

  6. I plowed through 2 feet of snow a couple years ago in a front wheel drive vehicle with a set of Yokohama all-season Envigor tires. Now that I own an awd vehicle, I see an even lesser need of 2 sets of tires. A good set of all-season tires that are properly taken care of, will take care of you in a time of need. I have owned 4 sets of Yokohama tires and will buy some for the legacy when the time comes.

Winter tires does nor mean snow tires. I ran a/s on the LGT, then went with my usual (for all my cars) summer tires & then winter tires. Made the car perform as it should.

All-Season tires are "no season tires" IMO.

If you are happy running crap tires year-round, fine. You don't know how good it can be with running PROPER tires for the season.

Even living in Delaware, which doesn't see bad weather, winter tires work FAR better in temps below 40F.

  7. the other night i was drivign into monteal from my suburb and what do i see .. but a grand national :).. so i pull up next to him and spool up and then blow off. then i get him to come into a parking lot. and showed them my buckaru. there were two in it a local gn tuner racer guy and they cars owner. i took the tuner guy for a ride. he was realy impressed by the cornering ability and the power full launch i could do even on wet. i think he wants to build the same now !

3.8 was a great choice, IMO!!

I have a secret Fiero "jones" (long story!!)

Anyway, years back, there was the 20th Anniversary Fiero Meet near me, and my favorite car, apart from all the Chevy & Northstar V8 conversions, was the Canadian Fiero with the 3.8 & a Whipple:

  8. Thanks for the quick reply. Those were the answers I was expecting, but I just wanted to double check.

WRT the 93 map with 91 octane. I ran Stage 1 93 in my '05 LGT for years. First time I drove out to AZ to see my dad, a loaded a map for 91 with the low octane out West. The next two times, I just left the 93 map there when I ran 90-91 (all they had) fuel. No issues. No pinging, no loss of mpg during freeway running.

You never really know what you are getting at the pump, anyway. Friend of mine on another forum had a friend who verified gas quality for the State of Michigan. Shocking how many stations got nailed for less-then-93-octane in the 93 tanks,.

  9. :D

If there's a way to open up the tailgate from the inside, then this car would be perfect.

Battery is disconnected most of the time. I really should drive it more ...

I just went past 20k miles a couple of months ago.

Thread I made when I bought the car. Wow its been a while.

    http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/regal-blue-gt-limited-wagon-pics-1131.html

Reminds me of mine when I picked it up on 10/1/2004! I never used a battery maintainer on it (as I do on two other cars), but mine has 58K miles, and used to sit for weeks on end (buddy of mine has been driving it for a few months after the new clutch). Original battery finally died in June.

Mine has everything on it except the 5AT, which is how I ordered it.

  10. Well, it's not a Ferrari wagon, which do seem to be quite rare, and even more so in Brilliant Silver? :D

    http://www.newsfilter.gr/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/ferrari-456_venice_station_wagon_2.jpg

As good as these LGT vehicles (that we know and 'love') are...especially the very useful wagon as in our case here, it seems to me that IMO to makes little sense to put some sort of 'rare' factor on any Subaru, even if it's a 5MT example. In contrast, this seems to be more along the lines of buying (hook, line and sinker) the Japanese way of thought that if WE the king tell the customer that it's a rare car (and then begin to call it 'Limited') that the customer will not only believe it's rare, they will then brag about it to their friends... and then WE can sell a vehicle to them too....Ah so!

Vehicle longevity (which can be viewed as a measure of quality materials and good engineering prowess, divided by the amount of hand-crafted workmanship that goes into the car) occasionally causes a vehicle to last long enough to actually become collectible. Although this seemed to be nowhere on the minds of the folks in Kobe when they designed and built these LGT's, evidenced by the fact that the 'Limited' models were produced in record numbers, while the 'Unlimited' models (such as yours) were only produced in '05 (at the start of the producion run) and at that, only sparingly...Although me 'thinks' there may have been another reason for the switch?

Liking cloth interior fabrics and foregoing power seat adjustment is fine and I prefer it that way myself...but doing without a sunroof and having the 5eat harnessed to that wonderful Boxer turbo power might further explain what Subaru's thinking actually was at the time...In fact, it reminds me of a MacDonald's restaurant way of thinking...one can still have a hamburger for seventy-nine cents but if your taste buds run closer to five bucks, then we can give that do that too and keep the change?

There will always be those that cannot afford or simply don't wish to invest $30k into a vehicle (that will likely be in the scrap heap in less than 10 years) so how do WE get the purchase decision of the more conservative customer swayed to our way of thinking...hmmm....which is that "ALL car dollars should be spent at Subaru, whether they be from Indiana or from Istambul...?

I might be wrong but I do like to believe that we in America have a bit 'higher' standard for determining what we are going to 'love' and what we are not going to ...especially about being told that we 'should' love them, just because they love our money...or Yen in this case?

Apparently a smart move on your part to not buy into that line of BS and drive a very good car at a fraction of what others have paid for essentially the same transport...

    Bravo!

Are there similar production numbers for the '06 and '07 LGT models anywhere on this site so we might see if Subaru has changed their way of thinking?

    :D

See my post # 151 above. Becasue they are only 86 of my combo doesn't make it "rare", it's that nobody wanted it.

ALL '05+ LGTs are "rare" in that they didn't sell any. I might be selling mine soon, as there's two months of the ESP warranty left, and with only 58K, it's value is as good as it's gonna be.

  11. I actually drove my Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics in the snow as well, and honestly they weren't much worse than the RE92's haha.

Do you think the Discount Tire lifetime free replacement is worth it? Do you only get one replacement tire? Wouldn't that be a problem if the tread depth was significantly different than the other three tires assuming the blow out happened after 2 years of purchase?

What is the best long lasting summer tire? I have been eating through summer tires. probably 14-15k from Toyo T1r's (9k from the previous owner). I think I may have gotten 13-14k out of my Goodyear Asymms.

I am also debating whether it may be worth just sticking some nice all-season tires on my 18 Prodrive GC05F's that will last me awhile. I just don't know if it is worth damaging them but I figure they could use a refinish by next summer anyways.

At least there are some nice all-seasons to choose from: Bridgestone Re960's, Goodyear F1 Allseason, BfGoodrich Super Sport A/S.

    Decisions, Decisions.

I personally get the replacement warranty, as when I have had flats, they tend to be in the sidewall which is not repairable. DT just replaced one tire I had, no questions asked. I forget the mileage on them, but it was after about a year on summer tires.

Long-lasting summer tires? Kind of a contradiction in terms. A good summer tire will not last too long. Nonetheless, a couple of suggestions are the Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2 (I had these, worked well), the BFG KDW and the GY GS-D3 (friends had these, worked well for them).

  12. What exactly is it "learning"?

A quick Google on pcm adaptive learning had a number of discussions across many car forums, but I found this piece from Chrysler:

    http://tinyurl.com/c6rwzj

Basically it resets fuel trim and (as I understand) timing events that it "learns" from recent driving sctivities.

I know on my other car forum, when guys do serious mods, they will disable the adaptive process in the PCM to keep the tuning more precise by eliminating vartiables.

  13. Supposedly (according to other posts) the ECU doesn't "learn" so there shouldn't be a "settle in" time. I went Stage 1 over a month ago and the car runs the same today as it did the day I first installed the map.

Does anyone know for sure if our cars have the ability to "learn"?

Yes, it does. As do virtually all PCMs built over the last 20 years.

There are ages-old threads about it here on the Forum.

FWIW, I've noticed it myself in street driving, and twice at the strip, with better times after a few runs with no other changes.

  14. I saw a RBP 2005 GT Wagon in Des Moines about 8-10 months ago, on gold OZ wheels...

But I am not sure if it was a MT or Limited... I only saw the back of the car, as I followed along the same street for a little while.

I had just bought a saw from sears, and couldn't fit the box into the trunk, so it was in the back seat... I was really diggin' the wagon that day, trying to convince my wife, who hates wagons, categorically.

I got a great deal on a 5.3 cubic foot floor-model freezer at Lowes today. I forgot that I had my dog guard in, so I wasn't gonna be able to slide it in over the folded rear seats. I had taken my F-250 in for service today, so that wasn't an option.

Didn't matter. Amazingly enough, I was able to put the freezer in sideways and still close the hatch on the wagon.

    Wagons rock!! ;)
