The insurance and registration fees have finally gotten to me and it is time to get the driveway space back.  I thought I would give it a crack here for fellow legacy lovers before opening it up to the other websites or potentially stock and trading in.
I'm the 2nd owner.  First owner bought it new in from Stevens Creek Subaru in 2008 and maintained it through them until he traded it in at 90k to Anderson Honda.  Then I bought it and owned it until now.  It was my only car and I loved its utility and performance aspects, but now I own multiple vehicles that do everything it can better (along with the fact it isn't smog legal).

NOT currently registered, but all fees are paid with paperwork.  It just hasn't been smogged to complete registration.

  2. Also - SoCal may be different than Norcal. It shouldn't be, but I think the Tech's might be a little more stringent down there.

You should have on all your OEM cats when you go in for the check.

If he is talking about the 05-09 gen, they shouldn't be doing sniffer at all. Just a OBD2 plug in and visual.

I've been able to pass while stage 2 (oem catless up) and a cobb dp with a turbo blanket + cut up stock heat shield.

EDIT: This was with stock mid/y/mufflers.

  3. No more fun parts for the OBXT?

Nope, finally took the time to put the headshield over the downpipe and replace the grimmspeed intake with the factory one. I'm picking up a gx470 to take over outback/offroading duties and a friend of mine is going to take the outback. He isn't interested too much in that stuff.

Just wait to find a set of AVO mufflers. I have those and I think they sound great. Nice low/bass tone to it at idle, and not loud at all with the oem midpipe.

I happen to have one sitting on some shelves I'll be letting go pretty cheap. Sedan v1 though so it will be tucked. Too bad you shipping it to you might kill it.

  4. A friend of mine swapped a salvaged 2.5 gt (engine, tranny, interior, everything)into my old 06 2.5i legacy. Even then, it involved cutting up the harnesses to get everything plugged and working. Both were manual, but it took him a long time to get everything up and running. He does this time of stuff all the time though and swaps subaru engines back and forth all the time.

Being a spectator on the amount of time and work (he considers his work fun) involved, I would definitely recommend against your swap plan for anyone who doesn't have a service manual in their head and spare vehicles to drive around while this happens.

  5. Just passed smog while stage 2 with cobb cated downpipe still on. OEM tmic and CBE were put on the car. I also put the stock heatshield over my Cobb dp to make it look more stock.

If someone needs the location, pm me directly.

I heard someone say they passed on a cobb downpipe as it met some requirement of the cat being so far away. More like the stock downpipe compared to how a lot of the other versions have the cat right off the turbo.

  6. Decided to cross post from the outback forums since it is exhaust related and it might help someone out.

Did three of the exhaust videos yesterday, but the Stromung decided not to cooperate very much. As you can see, it is much darker in the third video with the stromungs. Ended up with two zip ties on one of the hangers before giving up. Went to a local muffler shop today to get a resonator installed and the hangers moved around a bit. Everything was recorded with a Samsung Galaxy S6 edge plus from on top of a Home Depot 5 gallon bucket at approximately the same distance.

In case anyone is curious how the mid/y pipes are different between the systems. Stromung on bottom.

Below is my mod list that is consistent across the videos that might make a difference.

Final thoughts? The stock mufflers are nice for long road trips. Which is why the wife made me put them on initially. The aftermarket mufflers made me much happier around town but were a paint for my old man ears on the highways from 65-75. It didn't seem as bad after that, maybe the wind noise just drowned it out.

I honestly couldn't tell much difference from inside the car between the cobb/avo setup and the stromung. A friend said the stromung sounded louder though. After installing the resonator, it got rid of that raspy sound from when coming down in revs. I much prefer the interior noise from the stromung resonated setup, so I'll be keeping that. I'll have to figure out how to do the bumper cutout and trim to make it look nice though.

  7. Very nice. A few questions, if you don't mind.

Are you still running 225/55/17 tires?

Also, are you considering blacking out your headlights or going black around the grill instead of the white surround?

Did you do all the dynamat at once? I'm wondering if you felt the doors or the spare tire well made more of a difference? I was considering doing the four footwells and the spare tire well and thought I'd ask you how much of a difference you thought the doors would make.

  8. Headed back home yesterday around 4:30pm, I did a double-take and saw a WRB-ish LGT wagon on highway 5 in south Sac. Didn't get a photo cuz I was driving the wife's car and it was headed the other way.

I know someone who has a wrb lgt wagon, and goes to from south sac, but as far as I know, it is non-oped. I hope he isn't driving it!

  9. I saw a lowered silver (I think) outback xt Saturday night a little after 6 on westbound I-80 around Richmond. I was on my way to grab dinner with some friends after a day at Infineon in my 93 white impreza with a blue hood. I came up in the #1 (carpool) lane with a friend in a red evo 10 following me while you were in the #2 lane. Passed you back and forth a bit before having to merge in front of you to get across to my exit.
  10. Merged onto I-5 North today at Sutterville Road in Sacramento in my XT. Was about to change lanes when I saw a silver LGT coming up pretty quick and stayed in my lane. Looked lowered, aftermarket rims, exhaust, and an STI badge in the back.

Merged in behind you and got a peace sign through your sunroof. Gave it back, then got along side (1 lane between) and waved at you/female in passenger seat before my exit at Q street.

  11. Got my kit (don't know when, but I just got back to the office today). Everything looks nice. Simple idea, but hard without the right equipment. Especially to groove the channels. I'm glad I didn't waste any of my time because I would have wasted a solid day getting anything together as clean and smooth as what came in the mail.

I'm wondering why the groove cut into the 1/2 short channel is wider than the groove cut into the 3/8 long channels though? Is it just for installation tolerances? I didn't see how it would have made production any easier since it required two runs with whatever bit was used to create the groove.

  12. Black LGT sedan on Bilby Road -> Hood Frankling -> I-5 North this morning around 7:20am.

Saw you as you were coming down Bilby to make a left turn, I was the white wagon that crossed in front and then was a car ahead of you until about the pocket exit. You might have stayed to the left of me for a bit to get my attention, but I was busy getting annoyed at an SUV that wasn't signalling and didn't notice until you passed me.
