So before venturing the way of the Apple TV or something, you guys don't forget there are pentabs out there for decent prices which are fully integrated, screen everything. I can verify Windows XP Service Pack 2 runs great on a 400MHz Pentium 3 with only 64MB of RAM. Of course, no services running in the background like antivirus or firewall, but who would want them anyway? Just do a remote scan every now and then off your main system at home, wirelessly with the car parked in the driveway

 

Does it require a stylus, or will it respond to the tip of a finger?

 

Lemme know how well it's running when you get Centrafuse, Music, and Nav software all running at the same time. Not trying to knowck the Stylistic as a bad idea. I'm just concerned that 400mhz and 64mb of ram may be insufficient to run all this junk simultaniously with WinXP smoothly. Definitely easier to get Windows running on it than on the AppleTV.

 

Personally, I'm really digging the stealth ideal. I'd like the screen to at least look OEM, if not actually hide away completely. While I could run a dash mounted Xenarc/Liliput off of the Stylistic. I'll still need to stash it somewhere.

 

Also, I'm not into buying stuff on ebay. I realize that this is a personal limitation. But, I think I want as much stuff as possible to be new when I acquire it.

 

Currently, I'm leaning towards a macMini as the backend for my system. I won't have to purchase and assemble parts, and it seems to be the most PC I've been able to find for $600 (including mp3car.com). It's 1.6ghz dualcore, has a DVDROM, 1396, USB2, and every kind of wireless built into a 6.5x6.5 in. footprint. Yes, I could go cheaper, but I'd loose a lot in the process.

Anyone considering trying to retrofit an AppleTV box to be a CarPC? Someone already installed OSX on it and it turned out not to be that weak of a machine.

Xenarcs site gives the dimensions for the screen in their casing as 7.75W x 4.75H, which is about 197MMx121mm.

Can one of y'all with the 7" Xenarc screen measure the physical dimensions of the screen outside its bezel. I know the viewable surface is something like 6.5"x4", but I want to know how much more equipment is behind the plastic.

 

I have an idea for fabricating a movable screen, but I'd like to mock it up and I can't afford to get the screen yet.

I'm really currious about what you find. My understanding was that these 'carputer' power supplies were setup so that they would send a 'shutdown' command to the OS(similar to briefly pressing the power key on a PC), and not actually KILL power until after x amount of time has passed since the ACC line went dead.

Second, how interested are ya? Should I make a thread devoted to this? If you're even mildly interested, I might start making some of these. Thanks for the interest!

 

Might not be a bad idea to make a separate thread. More details on materials and effort involved woud be nice as well pics of the inside and assembly.

Assuming it isn't cost prohibitive, I'd get two just for the added storage potential. I've currently got the OEM nets there, and it's just dead space now.

 

Hadn't really considered putting the PC back there. Might need some tips on running wire all that way.

Just out of curiosity, why not wire your carPC into the AUX line?

Because I'd like to leave that input clear for other stuff. And I'd like to output track information to the stereo itself, as well as maybe ave the PC respond to commands sent by the stereo (|< << >> >|).

Yes, but completely missed it among the images. Not the type of pinout map I'm used to looking for.

What I want to know is the pinout of the XM connector for the 07 stereo. My ultimate goal is to wire a carPC directly to the stereo through that port. I don't have an oscilloscope, so knowing in advance will save me a lot of time.

 

20 pins seem like a lot since XMDirect uses 9ish (not including ant).

 

I'm going to pull my XM unit out and tear it appart. If there is anything I can snap pics of while I've got my dash apart, let me know.
