Just got done with the install on my 06 Outback Ltd. automatic. Went from 8 to 10 p.m., but we were very deliberate and took our time. The instructions are great, and I have an entirely new appreciation for the work Nathan did on the first baby steps with this hack. We ended up drilling a 1/2 wide hole in the raised plastic in the cubby right next to the cigarette lighter, which works really well. Ran the plug from the GLI up through there, attached it to the Belkin, and we were off. I can't wait for the three-hour drive home on Sunday. Tommorow we install on the 05 XT manual.

Sorry, Kristian, I left out the obvious step of connecting the GLI directly to the aux-in and then running the patch cable from the GLI to the cubby, but you make a strong argument for moving the GLI to the other end of the chain. I don't suppose there's a way to get access to the interior of the cubby without drilling? I don't suppose there is, but I can picture the look on my wife's face when she sees me walking toward our 2300-mile Outback with my DeWalt.

Hrm. That's a better idea to have the GLI at the far end of the patch cable from the aux-in, particularly since I think the plugs on the GLI are smaller diameter than the RS gold-plated cable I have and will therefore require a slightly smaller hole to be drilled in the floor of the cubby. I plan to have my laptop with your instructional PDF sitting right next to me during the install. Now to gather my tools.... If this really is easier than an Xbox mod, I'm golden.

Well, my day of reckoning is drawing nigh. Due to a small shipping snafu, my brother and law and I may not have two Jazzy boards to work with this weekend, but we'll at least have one kit to use for the install on my 06 Outback Ltd. I just finished reading through every page of this thread, so I feel about as comfortable as I'm going to with the install. I assume a couple questions I have will become clear once I get everything taken apart in the car, for example, where to stash the GLI? My install is going to be exactly like cjfreitag's, from what I can tell, so I'll be running my 1/8" to 1/8" patch cable from the GLI to the cubby, where my Belkin Auto Kit will be waiting. I wonder what kind of tape cjfreitag used to fasten his GLI to the underside of the radio. The thing I'm still most vague about is how the Aux-in "fastens" to the back of the radio. I'm to understand that it sits somewhere between the CD changer and radio HU? Will this be secure enough when I have the GLI hanging off the board? Lastly, Jazzy, my b-i-l called you earlier this week to clear up a problem with our recent order and was impressed by your friendliness and service. If our replacement equipment gets to him in Madison by Friday, we'll be very, very happy campers. Thanks very much for all your hard work. And wish us luck!

I guess I'll wait, then. It's not like we absolutely have to have this to do the initial install anyway, right? I'll just have to potentially deal with some noise for a while.

And now it's out of stock again. Sheesh. My brother in law and I were going to install two of these over the 06/10-06/11 weekend (we've already ordered our boards -- one for his 2005 Outback XT and one for my 2006 Outback Ltd.), but I'm wondering if anyone has experience with how quickly these are replenished or if there's somewhere else to get them? Is it best to stick with this brand/model, or are any likely to work just as well? Thanks!
