  1. From memory, there are 4-wires which run the steering wheel controls. 2 provide power for the backlighting, the other two act as a current loop for the controls. When you press one of the buttons on the steering wheel it as an associated resistance, the HU can detect the resulting current and knows what function is pressed. My guess is that the wire pair for the backlight either has a bad connection or you missed wired it. I'd start with 1) Triple checking that you actually connected the lighting pairs to the correct set of wires under the dash. 2) Use a voltmeter and check the continuity of the backlighting wires from the wheel down to the connection into the power. 3) If that looks OK, with the wheel off and airbag disconnect (!), turn the key to ACC, turn on the lights and check the voltage up at the wheel connector to see if you indeed have a voltage.
  2. ^^^^ Disconnect the battery before you do anything, hit the brakes for good measure. Remove the two screws on either side of the airbag, wiggle and it slides right out. Pull up the white clip on the positive side, slide the connector out. You aren't going to set the airbag off at this point. It isn't a big deal. You are going to have to pull the radio for good access to the wiring harness, and just remember if you have the factory sub-woofer to work from the connector farthest back from the HU.
  3. That DMZ you speak of is the middle of f'ing nowhere. My parents lived in Clovis (outside of Fresno) when I was in grad school down in LA. Oh how I hated the drive once I dropped down through the Grapevine on I-5. Blast furnace in the summer and cold & foggy in the winter. The only redeeming value that place has is that most of what we eat comes from there. A mid-state meet down along the coast would be fun, somewhere like Pismo Beach.
  4. OK, anyone here have the LGT wagon and works at the SCWA?
  5. Keep seeing a OBP Legacy GT with a spoiler running around Sonoma County. I'm guessing they aren't on this board because when I gave the Legacy Salute I got nothing back. Spotted an older silver LegacyGT this morning in Windsor. I miss seeing my GRP twin driving my kiddo to school in the AM. Where are you?
  6. Rota Tarmac II's (17x7.5, 48mm Offset) Goodyear F1-DS3's (215/45/17) http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r230/ZinFreak/Legacy/asti.jpg http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r230/ZinFreak/Legacy/tarmacii.jpg
  7. Thursday night -- Debadged NBP 2.5i in front of the Oakland airport terminals.:lol::lol::lol: Curiously this car used to sport a nice set of Rotas but is now back on stock rims 4STurbo, what happened to the Rotas?
  8. OBP Legacy GT in front of Exchange Bank in downtown Santa Rosa about 5-ish. We meandered by in the FXT. My wife realized today that Legacy's have 4 doors
  9. You go out there? I've got property up off Broad Reach & Leeward.
  10. 4/20 Hwy 1 GRP Legacy GT Wagon coming out of the chicanes going North towards Fort Ross. We blew by you southbound in the Forester XT Silver Legacy 2.5i coming southbound just south of Sea Ranch.
  11. Um, yeah you could say that. My little stash runs about 12 cases of Zin, Pinot, and Cabernet. 99% of it Sonoma County grape juice. A few imports sneak in every once and a while Send a PM to heightsgtltd for some ideas, and check out his thread over in the NorCal section. He was just out here with his wife and had a great time (except for the sushi). Let me know when you are coming out, I can give you recommendations if you need any.
  12. Jazzy's Aux-In is a truly amazing piece of electronics, but making the air bag light change states, I'm not sure he's up to that task. Living on the edge eh, smoke unfiltered Camels too?
  13. Not sure I'd want the Aux jack sticking out of the trim like that. Working on the car in jammies and slippers FTW
  14. Well, I haven't seen the Audi version, but these are starting to crop up on a lot of OEM head-units now. The built-in versions are great, they have data to/from the iPod so that it can be controlled directly from the HU. We won't get that with our Legacy's because the HU isn't capable of sending/receiving the data from the iPod. Jazzy's is about the best solution going for us. I believe Kenwood has a controller that could be hacked up, but at this point I'm happy with Jazzy's board and having the iPod on the pax seat or in the cup holder. Ah, I can only dream about seamless iPod connectivity. Maybe in my 2015 Legacy. Of course, by then the iPod will just stream a pure digital content by RF and all radios will have the RF decoder builtin...
  15. Cool, I'm glad it worked out for you. For me, it made no economic sense to even drive to the dealer to do this. I just got another battery while shopping at Costco.
  16. If you are certain you left no lights on, and you are certain the battery is cooked, then skip the aggrevation of the dealer and go buy a new battery. Save yourself a major headache explaining to the dealer that you aren't an idiot and a day's worth of hassle. Battery is about 3 tanks of gas, in the grand scheme of things it is small potatoes.
  17. Start your car when it is cold. If the fans don't stay on (normally they cycle on for about 3-4 seconds, then shutoff), then they will not replace the ECU. Believe me they aren't going to replace an ECU that doesn't exhibit the signs of being damaged (fans come on and STAY ON), they are too expensive and take too long to replace.
  18. OBP OB-XT parked on Skyline Blvd in Oakland on Saturday around 3PM. We were going up to the Chabot Space and Science Center. Wouldn't have seen me, I was stealth in my friends Ford Exploder.
  19. No idea what the connector is. Double check the red/black orientation on the airbag connectors AND the green ground wire.
  20. My take on this is that the number of cooked ECU's was relatively low. Sounds like there was a bad batch of relays which someone did the math and figured it was better to proactively replace relays than ECU's. When I talked with the service advisor at my dealership he indicated the number of cooked ECU's he could count on one hand. Anyway, it is a 12 minute fix if the ECU isn't bad. A bit of time is required to let the engine and coolant to cool sufficiently to test the fan operation (< 196F?)
  21. I do occasionally. I live in Sonoma County, but make passes through Marin to SFO or OAK when I make trips out of town. I'll be passing through bright and early tomorrow to catch a 737 to Spokane
  22. Did Subaru send them the wrong ECU or did they order the wrong one, and blame it on Subaru
  23. 3) Start vehicle. Verify the radiator cooling fan does not turn on and stay on. My turned on, then turned off about 2 seconds later... Self-test? My ECU was fine, relay replaced, got the car back in 2.5 hours all washed up and vacuumed. The time to replace and test was 12 minutes! I'm glad I didn't wait for the recall notice and just pushed my way in.
  24. You been hiding out somewhere? (Edit - Ah, I see now, new member...)
