Hi, Thanks for your input. That is my point - the fluid should not be green. In all the transmissions I worked on, the red fluid always stayed red. The color gets darker (more blackish) as it is used, but it always looked reddish. This is my first experience with CVTF. But definitely the blue should not turn green as it is used (IMO). Previous Legacy models used green CVTF , and is still used in some other Subarus today, and is available at the dealership. Maybe if you do not change the fluid in 100k it will be so dark you can not tell what color it started out as. But this CVTF at 30k is green. Again, my point is the fluid should be Blue (2.5 NA non-turbo TR580). I am puzzled why it is green and will visit my dealership next week to research this. Just seeking other opinions/experienes before going there.

I understand what you're saying, the fluid changing from blue to a green color after use does not mean it's bad. Unless you're having drivability issues, I wouldn't let this bother you. Fluid changing color is nothing new. Like I said before, I had gold oil turn red over a 6k mile interval. This isn't anything new in the oil world. Just don't be surprised if the dealership says this is normal and doesn't look much further into it.

I just completed a CVT drain and fill on my 2020 Legacy (base model) with the TR580.
All went well except for the old CVTF color. It looks very green, hard to tell in the pictures. The new CVTF is very blue. Everything I researched said the 2020 Legacy TR580 uses the CVTF-III (blue). Prior to 2020, the Legacy used CVTF-II (green).
My Legacy was MFD by Subaru on 02/20. In service date was 06/20. Drain and fill was done at almost 33k. All gaskets and fluid was purchased from Subaru. The blue CVTF-III came in a 5 gal bucket (SOA427V2600).

Q-1. Do you think it came from the factory with CVTF-II (green)?
    Q-2. Is the CVTF-III compatible with CVTF-II?

About 4.7 quarts came out. The car is running fine right now.
    Thanks

Hello. Subaru doesn't use a green CVT fluid. It'll be either blue or amber in color depending on 2.5 or 2.4. As previously stated, there are two options for this model year and I believe the TR580 fluid is blueish. Keep in mind fluids will change color during thermal cycles. I've had engine oils turn red over 6k miles because of the additive package.

Sounds like 5w-30 is the way to go for the turbo engine? I have left over 5w30 Castrol GTX Magnatec 5 gallon jug that I plan to use for my first oil change. I also bought a lot of Castrol EDGE Euro-Spec 0w-40 for my other car, 2018 Audi Q7 - am wondering if that can be mixed with a higher-weight Castrol Edge for use in my '22 Touring XT

5W-30 was the recommended viscosity until the 2.4DIT. IMO, run the OEM recommended viscosity unless you see oil consumption. 0W-20 has no issue with the FA24DIT at the Subaru interval. These engines are also pretty good with fuel dilution, so the viscosity doesn't break down like other manufacturers.

Good to know.  I haven't seen the new Cosmic in person but it seems Subaru is going in the right direction there.  I passed on the old Abyss Blue as it was too dull so went with the Magnetite Gray Metallic (still a bit boring).  From the brochure the 2023s also changed some interior colors.  One change I don't like is going from Sierra Tan Nappa Leather to Java Brown Nappa Leather for the touring.

Your black STI wheels do make a better look than the standard rims.  Congrats on the new ride.

I think you'll like it. The color is super nice, imo. They tend to do a good job with nice earthy colors for their models, specifically their outdoorsy ones. I actually wasn't much of a fan of the Abyss Blue, so I think this was a nice change.

The MY23 head units have been updated a bit and now offer wireless Apple CarPlay, which was a surprise. I didn't even know that was offered yet.

How do you like the Cosmic Blue Pearl as compared to last year's Abyss Blue Pearl?

Honestly the blue is the main reason why I decided to get the car. Its a new color that we are putting on the Ascent, Legacy and Outback and it looks so good. Its amazing how much it changes between the shade and sun.

I have a 2023 Touring XT on order but something I’ve wondered: Since the XT doesn’t have SI-Drive, is it correct to think of the XT as always being in “intelligent” mode?

The TCM is calibrated based on the specific vehicle spec. Even though our cars have the same engine and transmission, the TCM will either be a different part, or different calibrations. Its a same assumption, but its likely a mix between the two based on throttle input, load, etc.

    Hey everyone.

I've had a rare, though recurring transmission slippage issue.

When driving at a constant 125-130 km/h (75-80 MPH) for a long distance, the transmission will start slipping after some time. Slip is very noticeable and lasts for half a second at most, but will continue unless I lower my speed for a while.

The engine RPM is stable, no water or issue of any kind that might cause the symptoms.

I tried reproducing the issue with and without cruise control - same behavior occurs.

The car (and transmission) is still under warranty, but I wanted to ask anyone else out there if you had the same issue.

Only occurs when driving continuously at these higher speeds (may be a tad fast for Canada, but it's the regular speed limit for many US states, as I understand it...)

You're not the only one. The TR580 doesn't seem to have as many issues as the TR690, but the power and overall load the CVT has to handle is much less. Likely a pressure issue causing the chain slippage. Dealers are required to follow TSB 16-132-20R when diagnosing. I'm pretty sure your CVT also had its warranty extended to 100k miles.

    Nice.

I think the 23 Legacy Sport with the FA24 is a much better value than the 2023 WRX GT.  Does your Legacy have SI-Drive?  My 20 Touring XT does not, but I remembered the 2020 Sport did, but not the FA24.

I would agree with you totally, only because the GT doesn't come with a manual. The fact the Sport now comes with a 2.4 I think its a game changer. It does have Si drive and heated steering wheel standard.

  9. Hey all,

Just wanted to introduce myself. I've owned quite a few Subaru's and happy to try out my new MY23 Legacy Sport in Cosmic Blue. Car is currently at the dealership going through PDI so hopefully get it here in the next week or so. I just ordered 2018+ STI 19's for it which should really make it pop.

About myself - I've owned 8+ Subaru's and race my 06 STI in SCCA Solo events. I'm a Quality Engineer for Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. where these cars are built.

Photo's attached of the new ride before it shipped and my STI.

  10. Run what the factory recommends for viscosity. Nothing wrong with 0W-20 as long as you use an API certified synthetic and quality filter. I only run AMSOIL, but any name brand will honesty do just fine. 5W-30 will decrease fuel economy, increase cold flow viscosity, take longer to heat up and cause the oil bypass valve to bleed off oil pressure for longer periods of time. If you're not consuming oil, no reason to change to 5W-30.

I Just got a postcard about this.  Getting ready to take a long trip with my 2 year old battery.  Should I be concerned and if it goes down, do I need to keep all receipts?

As long as you drive your car frequently, I don't see any issue. If you're worried, turn your headlights to the "on" position (not auto) while driving and the alternator will instantly go to its full charging state.
